SouthCoast Health: How to Manage or Prevent Diabetes in the ‘Diabetes Belt’

Tuesday, November 30th, 2021
SouthCoast Health doctors Savannah

SouthCoast Health’s Dr. Rebecca Sellers (Family Medicine)

How manage & prevent diabetes

Chatham, Effingham, Bryan, Glynn & Liberty counties are all part of what medical experts call the Diabetes Belt, a specific region in the southern U.S. that has comparatively higher rates of diabetes than other areas.

Living in the Diabetes Belt doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be diagnosed with the condition. While there are certain risk factors beyond your control, there are still many that you can change. And, even if you’ve already been diagnosed, effectively managing your diabetes can help you reduce your risk of complications, according to SouthCoast Health.

Small lifestyle changes can have big results when it comes to reducing your diabetes risk.

“You don’t have to join an official program or wait to make changes,” says Dr. Rebecca Sellers, primary care physician at SouthCoast Health.

Sellers lists few things here that you can do now to control your diabetes risk.

Kid’s Dentistree’s Tips for Keeping a Healthy Smile During the Holidays

It’s that time of year again! The holidays come chock-full of festive social gatherings, sweet treats and gift-giving. With all the commotion that often surrounds the season, it’s easy to see how taking care of your teeth could fall to the bottom of the priority list. Kid’s Dentistree in Richmond Hill is offering a few tips on how you can keep your smile healthy during the holidays.

Stick to Routine

Even though there is a lot going on over the holidays, MouthHealthy.org, an ADA website, suggests maintaining a regular routine of brushing two times a day. If you are due for a cleaning or dental work, be sure to schedule and keep your appointment.

Be Selective

With so many tempting treats, it’s probably unrealistic to suggest avoiding sweets altogether. However, MouthHealthy.org tells us that eating sugary foods with or shortly after meals increases saliva production, which helps to cancel out acids and rinse away food particles. Also be sure to drink a lot of water, especially when eating dried fruits like cranberries, which tend to stick to your teeth. Finally, try to limit starchy foods, which can break down into sugars.

Protect Your Teeth

Try to avoid using your teeth as a substitute for proper tools. For example, use a nutcracker to crack the hard shells of nuts before eating, a bottle opener to remove bottle caps and scissors to remove stubborn ribbons. If you do damage a tooth, be sure to make an appointment as soon as possible to keep the problem from getting worse.

Happy Holidays!

For whatever you are celebrating this season, the Kid’s Dentistree team wishes you and your family a safe, joyful and healthy holiday.

Visit Kid’s Dentistree’s web site or call (912) 756-5437 to schedule your child’s visit today.

Manage Your Diabetes with SouthCoast Health Diabetic Self-Management Training Sessions

Thursday, November 11th, 2021

diabetes doctors savannah chatham county southcoast health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently identified the southern United States as a “Diabetes Belt,” meaning that those who live in our area are more likely to have type 2 diabetes than anyone else in the United States.

“This is a concerning discovery,” Internist and Primary Care Physician Dr. Douglas Perry said. “Those who live with diabetes often have difficult daily routines to manage, which can quickly become overwhelming. They have to be extremely vigilant in watching what they eat, how active they are, what medicines they’re taking, and how they’re taking them.”

SouthCoast Health offers Diabetic Self-Management Training Sessions, designed to teach the skills necessary for managing diabetes, such as creating meal plans and how to check blood pressure.

(SouthCoast Health) A Savannah woman shares story of going from operating room assistant to breast cancer patient

breast cancer surgery SouthCoast Health

Lori Smith, 35, a mother of two from Savannah, had participated in countless mastectomies as an operating room assistant when she was forced to look at this disease from a different perspective: that of the patient.

“It was a little odd and surreal,” said Smith, who had no family history of breast cancer. “I’ve worked in the operating room for 16 years. And it was always someone else, not me.”

Smith says she knew something might be wrong when she gave herself a self-exam. After noticing a tender, suspicious lump in her breast, Smith reached out to Dr. Christa Jillard at SouthCoast Health. The lump turned out to be cancerous.

(Savannah Pediatric Dentists) Kid’s Dentistree in Richmond Hill on tips for good oral health for kids

Thursday, September 30th, 2021

Savannah dentists pediatric dental children's Kidstree RIchmond Hill Pooler

Kid’s Dentistree, Richmond Hill

Below is a guest post by Kid’s Dentistree – a pediatric dentist in Richmond Hill.

In honor of National Dental Hygiene Month, Kid’s Dentistree is celebrating all the hardworking dental hygienists and sharing tips for maintaining good oral health.

National Dental Hygiene Month is observed every October in the United States. Dental hygiene refers to the ways in which we keep our mouth, teeth and gums clean and healthy. Colgate.com explains that the goal of this awareness month is to celebrate the work dental hygienists do and spread the word about the importance of good oral health.

What do dental hygienists do?

When most people think of dental hygienists, they think of a teeth cleaning. However, the American Dental Association (ADA) highlights the many additional responsibilities hygienists hold. These include examining your mouth, taking your blood pressure and pulse, and assessing your overall health and wellness. Hygienists also take dental x-rays to check for any problems in places that aren’t easily visible, such as in between or underneath your teeth. They also educate patients about good nutrition and ways to keep a healthy mouth. The cleaning itself involves removing plaque and tartar from around your gum line, followed by thoroughly brushing and flossing your teeth.

How do I maintain good oral health?

MouthHealthy.org, an ADA website, emphasizes the importance of maintaining your oral health at all stages of life. Understanding proper brushing and flossing techniques and eating a well-balanced diet can go a long way toward preventing cavities. It’s also essential to see your hygienist on a regular basis to help remove tartar build-up and detect any potential problems before they worsen. This can even help you save money by avoiding costly dental treatments down the road.

Take advantage of your dental benefits!

Most dental insurances cover two annual cleanings and exams at little or no cost. If you have dental insurance and haven’t had your second visit for the year, now’s the time to take advantage of your benefits and schedule your appointment. If you do not have insurance, don’t worry. Give Kid’s Dentistree a call and ask about the discount options available to you.

Visit Kid’s Dentistree’s website or call (912) 756-5437 to schedule your child’s visit today.

The Kid’s Dentistree office is located in the “Clock Tower” building, right next to The Suites at Station Exchange on Ford Avenue in Richmond Hill.

Donate diapers, baby wipes to OVER THE MOON’s Community Diaper Drive, Savannah

Thursday, September 30th, 2021

Community Diaper Drive Savannah Pooler Over the Moon

“OVER THE MOON” Community Diaper Drive Sept. 22- Oct. 6, 2021

OVER THE MOON (Coastal Georgia’s only diaper bank) is holding a Community Diaper Drive Sept 22 through Oct. 6 throughout the Savannah area. You can help by dropping off diapers, training pants, or unscented baby wipes at any of the donation barrel sites listed online here.  OTM’s donation wish list is available through Target and the items ship directly to OVER THE MOON.

1 in 3 families’ health is threatened because they cannot afford to buy basic hygiene essentials. Safety-net programs, such as WIC and Food Stamps awarded through SNAP, do NOT cover the cost of diapers – taxed items in the state of Georgia.

OVER THE MOON’s Diaper Drive coincides with National Diaper Bank Awareness week which draws attention to the issue of diaper need in the U.S.

Savannah’s OVER THE MOON is a volunteer-run 501(c)3 nonprofit in Coastal Georgia which provides diaper bundles, period supplies, and other hygiene necessities through partner agencies, community events and directly to families as-needed. OVER THE MOON aims to end “diaper need” and “period poverty” because they believe in dignity for all, no matter how big or small.

You can help OVER THE MOON meet their 2021 goal to collect over 50,000 diapers (wipes, too!) by contributing to this Community Diaper Drive 9/22-10/6. Public Donation Barrel locations throughout the Savannah area include:
