Great race for kids: Savannah Mile Run on May 25

Savannah Mile Run 2013Make plans to take the kids to the 7th Annual Savannah Mile Run on May 25.

This popular run will begin at Forsyth Park and continue one mile straight down Drayton Street, finishing on Broughton Street. This unique running event attracts all levels of participants, from children to experienced runners.

The Savannah Mile will include five heats and feature a Fun Run Family Heat and five-year age groups, guaranteeing many award winners. All proceeds go to The 200 Club, which provides immediate financial assistance to the surviving family of local law enforcement officers and firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty. First responders and military enjoy complimentary entry.

A moment of silence will be observed prior to the Savannah Mile awards ceremony to honor the victims of the bombing in Boston on April 15, as well as the victims of the recent explosion in West Texas on April 17, which includes many first responders. Participants will have an opportunity to donate money to the The One Fund Boston, which benefits the people most affected by the tragic events that occurred in Boston.

After the race, the GEORGIA SEA TURTLE CENTER is releasing a Loggerhead Sea Turtle patient back to the ocean! You’ll also have a chance to meet their mascot Scute and learn all about sea turtles at the GSTC’s Education Station located in front of the Tybee Island Marine Science Center.

Silas the loggerhead will be released into the surf in front of the Tybee Marine Science Center around 9 a.m. April 27 following the Tybee Turtle Trot. Sign-in for the Tybee Island Marine Science Center’s Sea Turtle Trot starts at 6:30 a.m. April 27 at the center at 1509 Strand Ave., next to the Tybee Pier. FREE Kids Run @ 2013 SEACREST Race for Preservation, Feb. 23, Savannah

The 2013 Race for Preservation will host their First Annual Kid’s Run, approximately 1/4 mile course, on Saturday, February 23rd at Forsyth Park, Savannah at 7:45 AM, prior to the 8 AM start of the 5K & 10K events.

Combining the goal of fitness with an appreciation for the beautiful City of Savannah, this kiddie run will take runners from the north side of Forsyth Park—Bull @ Gaston Streets (starting line), heading south, circling the Forsyth Park Fountain and returning back to the finish line. Approximately ¼ mile course.

The new Kids Run is free of charge to all participants. This is a family-friendly event and parents are encouraged to bring the entire family.

Get ready to run the 5K or 10K or, if you prefer, walk the 5K. Race registration is open and ongoing at Fleet Feet Savannah:

Register for Savannah’s first Ultra Marathon on Fort Pulaski (5K, 25K & 50K) to help save Rails to Trails

How can you help save Savannah’s beleaguered Rails to Trails, the 6-mile biking/walking/jogging nature trail between U.S. 80 East and the Savannah River and help get it restored?

Register for the Savannah Rails to Trails 50K, 25KK and 5K, set to take place on January 12, 2013. The race will be on Fort Pulaski and Rails to Trails. This is Savannah’s FIRST Ultra Marathon. Proceeds will benefit the restoration and maintenance of Rails to Trails Savannah, which is also known as McQueen’s Trail.

Rails to Trails is eroding so badly that the west end is almost impassable in some areas.

3rd Annual Go Green 5K Family Fun Trail Run/Walk, Whitemarsh Is., Savannah

On October 13 at 8:30 AM, Chatham County will be hosting the 3rd Annual Go Green 5K Family Fun Trail Run/Walk at the Whitemarsh Preserve on Whitemarsh Island next to the YMCA to benefit Chatham County’s land conservation activities.

In addition to the 5K, there will be a raffle, food, music, Diaper Dash, Kid K, and dog costume contest. The cost is $25, kids under 10 years of age run/walk for free (t-shirts for kids will be $10 at the event). Jogging strollers and pets are welcome! One-Mile Kids’ Run with Rock n’ Roll Savannah Marathon

Finishing a marathon is child’s play with KiDS ROCK Savannah – a one-mile fun run for children in grades K – 7. This non-competitive, non-timed event is all about having fun and making it to the finish line. Kindergarten distance is a half mile run.

Participants can become full marathon finishers by completing a 25.2-mile training program prior to November 4th or they can just run, walk or jog the one-mile course on race day. Every child is a winner and will be rewarded with an official race number, T-shirt, goodie bag, and colorful medal – just for finishing!

School/Team registration is now open. There is no fee to be a team, however you need a minimum of 10 registered participants. Being an official KiDS ROCK Team allows your team name to be listed in our registration system and allows you to pick-up your student’s race numbers and t-shirts. Kids will enjoy the final mile of their marathon on an energetic, fun filled course! Participants can rock out with live entertainment and relish in the glory as they cross the finish line. There, kids will receive a hard-earned finisher’s medal and be able to feast on healthy post-race refreshments.
The start and finish line are in Daffin Park.
As participants in KiDS ROCK Savannah, you can become a marathon finisher by accumulating 25.2 miles of a marathon at your own pace over a span of 4,6 or 8 weeks with guidance from your parents or teachers.
