Join Oatland Island Wildlife Center in Savannah for a day of enchantment, Sat. May 5 2018, 10AM-2PM

This family-themed festival is all about the “wee folk” getting up close with the natural world & encouraging imaginative outdoor play.

There will be a scavenger hunt, costume contest, crafts & games. All ages are encouraged to participate in the annual gnome & fairy home building contest.

Homes can be built at the festival by using natural materials from Oatland’s forest. Bring your whole family to stroll Oatland’s magical trails & maybe you will catch a glimpse of a fairy or gnome looking for a place to call home.

General Admission applies: $5 for adults, $3 for children, seniors & military.
Children 3 & younger are free.
There will be additional fees for some of the activities in order to raise money for the center.

The St. Andrew’s Performing Arts Department presents, “Oliver!” A cast of 28 7th-12th grade students will bring this classic story to life on the Skinner Hall stage.

The City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs Art Camp will be during the Chatham County School Spring Break March 26-30 2018.

Time: March 26-30, 2018. Location: 9 W. Henry St.

Ages: 5-12 (5 year-old currently enrolled in Kindergarten)

Times: Monday-Thursday, 9AM-4:30PM & Friday, 9AM – 3PM

Fee: Per child per session $165 for non-city residents / $145 for city residents

Daily Schedule

8:30AM – 9AM – Arrival
9AM – 9:30AM – Meet & Greet
9:30AM – 12:30PM – Rotation between classes
12:30PM – 1PM – Lunch

General Camp Information

Drop Off: Please drop off your children no earlier than 8:15AM. Adults/guardians must sign in all camp participants at the parking lot white fence at 9 W. Henry St. Students arriving after 9AM or leaving before 4:30PM must enter and exit camp through the front office at 9 W. Henry Street & be signed in at the front desk by an adult.

Pick Up: Adults/guardians must sign out all camp participants at the parking lot white fence. Late fees of $25 will be imposed for pickups after 5:30PM. Students will ONLY be released to the individuals listed on the registration sheet.

Parents are NOT allowed to visit children during the day while in class or during their lunch/gym break.

Appropriate Attire Reminders: For safety reasons, we suggest tennis shoes. Aprons are provided but we advise dressing your child in clothing appropriate for art making.

Supervised Outdoor Activity Weather Policy: Daily outings are planned to St. Paul’s gym. Activities will be held in the Cultural Affairs facility in the event of rain or excessive temperatures.

Food & Drink: Please send simple, non-spoiling sandwiches, fruit, or vegetables in packaging that your child can open. Make sure that the paper bag/lunch box has your child’s name clearly marked on the front. Please NO peanuts. There is NO access to a refrigerator or a microwave. No food will be provided without prior parental approval.

St. Andrew’s School  sophomore Eden Young won the regional National English Speaking Union’s Shakespeare Competition last month in Savannah.

Eden took on the role of Queen Katherine for her monologue from Henry VIII and also performed Sonnet 146. Since January, she has been working on the two Shakespeare pieces with SAS theatre teacher Ms. Maggie Hart. Eden now receives an all expense paid trip to the National Competition in New York City this April. A panel of judges will select the top three performances. 

The purpose of the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition is to help young people develop critical thinking skills, improve public speaking abilities, and increase his/her self-confidence through reading, analysis, and performance of Shakespeare works.

Savannah Engineering Academy Summer Camp 2018 Savannah summer camps Attention parents of teens who are considering careers in engineering.

The May 7 2018 application deadline is quickly approaching for The 2018 Savannah Engineering Academy Summer STEM Camp.

The five-day summer program @ Armstrong State University is June 11-15 2018. It is for rising junior and senior high school students interested in math, science and engineering.

During this STEM 2018 summer camp, students will:

  • explore engineering through hands-on activities such as building LED flashlights, remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), and a water filter;
  • enjoy field trips such as a riverboat tour of the Savannah River to learn about harbor deepening, river dredging, and local port activity;
  • visit to a local site development construction project
  • go on site visits to facilities including Gulfstream Aerospace, JCB, Skidaway Institute of Oceanography & more.

Students work with professional engineers from major engineering disciplines including civil, electrical, computer, aerospace, mechanical, manufacturing, industrial, water resources, environmental, and ocean.

What an amazing opportunity to learn about engineering, inform decisions on a college major and strengthen their college application.

To participate, students must:

  • Be a rising junior or senior in high school
  • Provide a teacher recommendation
  • Have grades of 80% (3.0/4.0) or better in all math/engineering/science/technology classes

During this camp, our young engineers will be building their own electric vehicles. They will learn about the importance of preparation and organization. We will learn about simple and complex circuits and look at several electric vehicle designs. We will gather materials from Home Depot, start to build our vehicles, and have a race on Friday!

Savannah Ballet Theatre presents The Little Mermaid

Bring your kids to Savannah Ballet Theatre’s production of The Little Mermaid on April 21 at The Lucas Theatre for the Arts in Savannah.

Each performance will be followed up with a Character Meet and Greet, free with ticket. Kids’ tickets for the matinee are only $12!

The world-renowned professional company along with local students from the community will present two performances on April 21. SBT’s production of The Little Mermaid premiered in 2015 and launched SBT’s series of original ballets adapted from adventure-filled stories.

SBT’s adaptation is based on the tale by Hans Christian Andersen – moving audiences beyond the Disney version and allowing them to experience the story in a new way.

Registration for YMCA of Coastal Georgia Summer Camp 2018 programs opens March 1.

YMCA camp programs offer a fun and unique experience that gives children and teens the opportunity to have the best summer ever, by meeting new friends, exploring nature, discovering new interests, being physically active and creating memories that last a lifetime.

Day Camp, like many Y programs, is about learning skills, developing character and making friends. Few environments are as special as camp, where kids become a community as they learn both how to be more independent and how to contribute to a group as they engage in physical, social and educational activities. Y counselors are dedicated to making sure camp is an amazing experience for every camper- all summer long.

Day Camps at the YMCA run on a weekly basis, Monday through Friday, for children ages 5-13 years. You can pick and choose which weeks you would like to attend; come just one week or the whole summer!

Camp operates from 9 am -4 pm daily, with drop off starting at 7AM and pick up ending at 6PM.

This four-day camp is designed to help upper-elementary and middle school students improve their drawing skills and begin the process of developing a portfolio. This comprehensive STEAM Camp gives young people the opportunity to explore the artistic potential of technology. In this weeklong camp, students will learn to use a variety of technologies and methods to create and express themselves.

Participants will also learn basic computer programming with Arduino microcontrollers. The program culminates with a reception and exhibition of the participants’work in the Jepson Center.
