Is Your Child Afraid of the Doctor’s Office? SouthCoast Health Tips on How You Can Help

SouthCoast Health: What to do if your child fears pediatrician visits

Half of parents say their preschoolers are afraid of doctors’ visits, and one-fifth of parents say they struggle to speak with providers because their children get so upset.

SouthCoast Health medical experts offer tips here on how to help including: explain what to expect: validate your child’s feelings; use make-believe play: and lead by example.

“Do what you can to manage your own stress before and during the appointment. “One way to get relief,” advises Alisha Bennett, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at SouthCoast Health, “is to designate a specific time for asking questions.”

If there are any important matters you’d like to discuss with the doctor, consider bringing another parent or support person along, so you can speak alone with the doctor in private before or after your child is seen.

Learn more here.

SouthCoast Health: Why you need an annual physical

SouthCoast Health patient and cancer survivor Bernice Watson (pictured above) has one message for you: Never miss your annual check-up.

This retired school teacher says being diligent about her screenings likely saved her life.

In late 2016, a mammogram revealed a suspicious lump and the subsequent biopsy confirmed the bad news. Watson had Stage 2B breast cancer.

Your annual physical can be among the most important events of your year.

“It’s so important to keep your appointments,” SouthCoast Health patient and cancer survivor Bernice Watson also insists, “and I take every opportunity I can to remind other women to do the same. Early detection was the key to my good outcome.”

Learn more about why you need an annual physical here.

If you’re due for your annual physical, or want to begin a yearly relationship with one of SouthCoast Health’s physicians, visit SouthCoast Health online to schedule an appointment, or call 912-691-3600.

SouthCoast Health: What Are the Signs of a Kidney Problem?

SouthCoast Health Nephrologist Dr. Nizar Eskandar

SouthCoast Health on the signs of a kidney problem

While the kidneys may only be about the size of your fist, these bean-shaped organs are vital to the function of your body. Healthy kidneys filter about a half cup of blood every minute, remove waste, and produce urine.

Only an estimated 10% of people with kidney disease know they have it.

“The signs of kidney problems mimic symptoms of other conditions,” says SouthCoast Health Nephrologist Dr. Nizar Eskandar. “This often prevents patients from getting help for their kidney issues early on, when treatment is most likely to be effective.”

SouthCoast Health urges you to seek medical attention at the first signs of any kidney problems. Find some of common symptoms of kidney problems to watch out for here.
