Moms In Training Savannah: Moms committed to reaching their personal goals while helping cancer patients reach theirs

Tuesday, October 27th, 2015

Moms in Training code Savannah

There’s no influence like a mom’s. It’s a power that can do good for blood cancer patients everywhere; which is why Moms in Training is looking for moms and moms-to-be to join them.

The program is geared towards moms with kids of all ages looking to get in shape and help save lives while doing it.

It’s called Moms In Training, inspired by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) premier fundraising campaign, Team In Training.

Moms In Training meets the needs of today’s busy moms. It’s a flexible 8-10-week workout program where moms come together to get in shape while raising funds for cancer treatments.

Once training is completed, you will have the opportunity to complete 3.1 mile walk or run at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah 5K with family, friends and neighbors cheering you on! If you would like complete an event that is a longer distance, there’s Team In Training, which will prepare you for marathons (26.2 miles), half marathons (13.1), triathlons and hike events. To learn more, watch the Moms In Training video https://bitly.com/momsvideo.

Here’s what Moms In Training will do for you:

Get in shape and reach personal goals

Flexible workout schedules

Meet other moms in your communities

Create social networking groups

Help each other with training and fundraising

Attend events throughout the season for you and your family

Here’s what you will do for cancer patients:

Help save lives

Raise funds for cancer research

Contribute to the LLS goal of a world without blood cancers.

Proof that fundraising programs like Moms In Training work are reflected in the fact that in 1960 only 3% of all children with a blood cancer survived. Today, thanks to funds raised by moms like you, it’s a 90% survival rate. But we need to continue working to find cures and ensure access to treatments not someday, but today.

Join us and other moms in your community. Get In Shape. Meet Moms. Fight Cancer.

Sensory Soft Sunday for children with autism Savannah Savannah Children’s Museum will continue to host Sensory Soft Sunday as a unique offering for families with children who have special needs. Savannah Children’s Museum will open from 9-11am on Nov. 15 and Dec. 13 to provide these families an opportunity to make connections while enjoying SCM’s many exhibits in a sensory friendly way.

Through discussions with the special needs community, Savannah Children’s Museum discovered that there are few offerings of this kind in the region. Museum staff feel it is especially important to provide all children, regardless of age or ability, an opportunity to experience all that Savannah Children’s Museum has to offer.

The goal of Sensory Soft Sunday: provide an exclusive time period for the families of children with special needs in order to reduce anxiety and overstimulation that can occur when the museum is open to the general public. The trains at Georgia State Railroad Museum, our adjacent facility, will not operate during this exclusive time period, to eliminate the sound of whistles.

To promote a calm atmosphere, the number of attendees is limited. The staffing, however, is not reduced so families may have increased staff interaction as desired or needed. A designated ‘quiet zone’ is located in the orange caboose at Savannah Children’s Museum.

Pre-registration for Sensory Soft Sunday is required and payment is due upon arrival. To register, email Liz Stratford at Lstratford@chsgeorgia.org.

Cost: $7.50 per person over 18 months, free for Coastal Heritage Society Members
Time: 9am-11am on the following Sundays: Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15, Dec. 13
Location: Savannah Children’s Museum 655 Louisville Rd. Savannah, GA 31401

St. Andrew’s students coding & creating arcade games

Thursday, October 22nd, 2015

St. Andrew’s Students Coding & Creating Arcade GamesStudents at St. Andrew’s School in Savannah are learning how to code and having a blast doing it.

This fall, the freshman class along with several middle school students designed one-of-a-kind arcade games. This cool project is part of a technology class taught by Ms. Maria Dixon at the independent school on Wilmington Island.

The top arcade games, as voted by the students, were recently featured at Creative Coast’s annual Geekend conference for attendees to play.

The arcade games will also be on display Friday, October 23 during the Lions’ Varsity football game. Anyone at the St. Andrew’s event will be able to able play one of the arcade games for a small donation. All dollars raised are going to the Savannah Bicycling Campaign to promote cycling safety and advocacy.

The partnership doesn’t end with donations alone. Jen Colestock, cyclist and member of the Savannah Bike Campaign helped create platforms, transforming the school’s MacBook’s into stand-up, arcade style machines. Students participating in the Graphic Design Seminar taught by Maria Dixon also designed the decals and paint details for the exterior of the machines.

“This is the first time St. Andrew’s students have been involved in geekend, and they represented us well,” said Dixon. “The students had a great time with this hands-on assignment, geekend participants loved the unique games and now the St. Andrew’s community is raising dollars for a great cause – it is a winning combination all the way around.”
