When you take kids to tour national parks, you never know how much they are getting out of the visit. Especially for those of us moms who aren’t exactly history experts.

Which is why you need to pick up the Junior Ranger booklets at the visitor centers of national parks you visit. The Junior Ranger program kids engage more during the visits.

Junior Ranger booklets have activities about the national parks for ages 5-12. Junior ranger books are free to any visitor and usually are available at the visitors’ centers. Often, similar programs with more advanced activities are also available for older kids. Just ask at the site’s visitor center.

While doing the activities, children enjoy earning a badge and a certificate.

The story of Savannah’s role in the American Revolution comes alive with the Loyalists & Liberty interactive program @ Savannah History Museum & Battlefield Memorial Park.

This hands-on family-friendly experience starts in Savannah History Museum, where you will learn about colonial life, conditions of a soldier in the American militia, and events leading up to the 1779 Battle of Savannah. The program concludes on Battlefield Memorial Park with musket firing demonstrations, while you join in a reenactment of the militia attack on the British fortification.

Dec. 18-19: Fort Pulaski National Monument in Savannah will commemorate the Confederate Nog party of 1861 with the Fort Pulaski Candle Lantern Tour.

Each year during the holiday season, visitors can embark on an evening tour of the Civil War fortress by candlelight and oil lamps.

Hot cider, cookies, caroling and weapons firings will allow guests to relive the festive occasion of 1861.

Tickets are limited for this popular event, and sell out each year. Admission charged.

The original party, held during Christmas 1861, gave the Confederate garrison at Fort Pulaski a respite from the tension of impending battle. The fort casemates, armed with cannon, were decorated with holiday garlands and as one soldier commented, tables groaned under the weight of fine delicacies sent down from the city. With song and good cheer, the men celebrated a light-hearted moment as the dark clouds of war gathered over Savannah.

Visitors will have the unique experience of a guided tour of the fort by candlelight. Hot cider and cookies, caroling, and night-time weapons firings will allow visitors to re-live the festive occasion.

Children 3 years old and younger are free, but reservations must be made for them. Advanced ticket purchase is highly recommended and may be purchased in person from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by cash, check (made payable to “National Park Service”), or credit card. Credit Card orders are accepted by phone at (912) 786-4383.

Light up your bikes, tinsel up the handrails and cruise the island for a night of holiday fun.

The Tour de Lights parade will begin and end at A-J’s Dockside (1315 Chatham Avenue) on Sat. Dec. 19.

Bike line-up and decorating begins at 5 p.m. with the contest judging at 6:15 p.m. on Sat. Dec. 19. The winner will be announced at 7 p.m. All proceeds and donations benefit the Rising TYde Community Food Pantry.

Luminary Night with MRS. CLAUS @ Skidaway Island State Park.

6-8PM Sat. Dec. 12
Cookies, carols, hayrides & more. Bring your children and pets for pictures with Mrs. Claus. Enjoy a walk along an enchanted luminary trail and take a hayride around the park. Sip on hot chocolate while decorating cookies and making holiday crafts. Cookies, cookies and more cookies will be served!
Cost: $5 per picture, hayrides $3.

Season of Light: 30 minute programs at 11AM, noon, 1:30, 2:30
Go inside Oatland’s planetarium on the Winter Solstice to learn why this special day has sparked so many cultural festivities. You will explore the annual path of the Earth around the sun and what celestial bodies present themselves this time of year.

Cost: Tickets are $2 beyond the regular admission and can be purchased in the lobby. Program may not be suitable for
children under 3 years old due to fear of the dark.

Live Animal Encounter 1:30-2:30PM
In this 1-hour animal program you will meet our animal ambassadors and learn how the animals survive in the wild, how they came to Oatland, and how you can help protect them in the future.

Cost: Tickets for this program are only $2 beyond the regular
admission and can be purchased in the lobby.

Log Cabin Open House 11AM-3PM
Rest your feet on the porch of the log cabin and enjoy the aroma of hearth cooked goodies. Delk Cabin (c. 1830) will be open for exploration and goodie sampling from 11AM-3PM

December 28 and 29 – Open regular hours
Log Cabin Open House (11AM-3PM) and Cabin Animal Encounter (1:30PM)
Staff will be baking over the hearth of historic Delk cabin (circa 1830s). Try a free sample of a delicious baked good and explore life before electricity. If you make it there by 1:30 pm please come, for a small fee, to cabin stage for a 45 minute live animal encounter. This presentation is all about living with wildlife. Staff will present several of Oatland’s animals that would love to live under your roof if they could.

Cost: Cost of  the animal encounter is $2 beyond regular admission. There is no extra charge to explore the cabins and sample a tasty treat.
