Over the past few weeks, we’ve been introducing you to your Moms in Training captains who will be encouraging you during your Saturday mornings runs in Daffin Park.

Today we’re introducing you to James (pictured here) –  the Moms In Training Honored Hero this season.

James is 4 years old and was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in August of 2013. James has gone through quite a bit in his short life. He’s endured chemo, radiation, bone marrow biopsies, transfusions and many more procedures.

Expected to be done with treatment in December of 2016, James is a happy boy who loves video games, super heroes, trucks…all things little boy. He has good days and some not so good days as a side effect from his treatment.

With all that he has been through, his family says they are so very thankful that most days he is just a wild little boy.

Moms In Training is a way to help cancer patients like James.

Moms in Training includes weekly Saturday morning training sessions (8-9 am at Daffin Park).

Savannah Children’s Museum will continue to host Sensory Soft Sunday as a unique offering for families with children who have special needs. Savannah Children’s Museum will open from 9-11am on Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15 and Dec. 13 to provide these families an opportunity to make connections while enjoying SCM’s many exhibits in a sensory friendly way.

Through discussions with the special needs community, Savannah Children’s Museum discovered that there are few offerings of this kind in the region. Museum staff feel it is especially important to provide all children, regardless of age or ability, an opportunity to experience all that Savannah Children’s Museum has to offer.

The goal of Sensory Soft Sunday: provide an exclusive time period for the families of children with special needs in order to reduce anxiety and overstimulation that can occur when the museum is open to the general public. The trains at Georgia State Railroad Museum, our adjacent facility, will not operate during this exclusive time period, to eliminate the sound of whistles.

To promote a calm atmosphere, the number of attendees is limited. The staffing, however, is not reduced so families may have increased staff interaction as desired or needed. A designated ‘quiet zone’ is located in the orange caboose at Savannah Children’s Museum.

Pre-registration for Sensory Soft Sunday is required and payment is due upon arrival. To register, email Liz Stratford at Lstratford@chsgeorgia.org.

Join this hands-on workshop open to all skill levels interested in fused glass. Students will learn basic glass cutting and fusing techniques creating a unique fused glass wind chime.

In this one day workshop students will learn the traditional art of felting as a non-woven or sewn fiber arts application. Students will learn basic techniques in both binding and wet felting.

This ancient Japanese ceramic firing technique in which 1800° glowing red hot works are removed from the kiln and placed into a reduction chamber filled with combustibles is sure to inflame and inspire. Personal bisque fired works can be glazed and fired. Pieces will be available for those who want to participate.

Festive Mask Making
Instructor: Mary Bass

Come transform yourself into any creature you’d like! In this two hour workshop, students will learn how to make a festive mask out of felt! Basic sewing and embroidery techniques will be covered.

Make and Take Tuesdays Kids’ Cooking Classes with Tummy Time Foods
Tuesdays at 4-5pm
Frank Murray Community Center, Whitemarsh Is.

It’s not your average After-School Class.
Bring your kids to make a home-cooked meal to take home and enjoy with the family. It’s a fun, hands-on activity where the kids learn basic cooking skills, family nutrition tips and it all ends with a delicious take-home dinner prepared in-class — all without the planning, shopping, prep or mess at home.

Each meal will feed up to 5-6 people and is prepared in disposable take-home bake and serve containers. You also receive a copy of the recipe with (re)heating instructions.

This class is open to children of all ages. Parents are welcomed to accompany their child in the class, or you can drop them off.

Cost: $45 per family and includes hands-on cooking lesson, family nutrition tips and a delicious take-home meal prepared in-class in take-home bake and serve containers, complete with a copy of the recipe with (re)heating instructions.

What is Moms In Training?
Moms In Training is a flexible, 12-week training program for Savannah area moms to get in shape, meet other moms and help fight blood cancers. Trainings take place for one hour on the weekends with other social event opportunities during the week.

Even though it’s called Moms in Training, dads are welcome to join, too. You don’t necessarily need to be a mom to take part. If someone is interested in training for the half marathon relay and has lots of patience with kiddos, they are welcome to join the program too.

Why Join?
Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and adolescents less than 20 years old. In 1964, the chance of surviving Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood leukemia, was 3%. Thanks to treatments advanced by LLS, children 15 years old and younger who are fighting ALL today have a 92% chance for survival.

LLS and Moms In Training participants are saving lives, and all moms are invited to join the fight for a cure.

Can I bring my child to trainings?
Yes! As long as your baby is able to remain in the stroller, you are welcome to bring him or her to trainings. The workouts allow you to exercise with a stroller, but it is not necessary. Some moms prefer to use the hour as “me” time.

What do trainings consist of?
Trainings will consist of running, walking, cross training and stretching.

I’m not an athlete! Can I really do this?
Yes! Moms of all levels join the program. You will receive incredible coach support as well as a training calendar that you can follow on your own. The program is extremely flexible, and you are supported 100% of the way.

How much do I fundraise to participate?
Moms commit to raising $500 to help fight blood cancers. There is a $50 registration fee to join which is credited toward your fundraising goal. Upon registering, you will receive your own fundraising website as well as fundraising support from LLS staff. The average mom raises $1,500!

I know someone personally affected by cancer. Can I train in honor or memory of them?
Absolutely. Moms in Training encourages you to honor someone you know who has been affected by ANY type of cancer.
