Refuge Adventure 2016 on Blackbeard Island

On Sat. Oct. 8, 2016, Savannah National Wildlife Refuge staff and volunteers will transport guests (ages 8 and older only) to Blackbeard Island NWR for day-trip full of adventure

On-site activities will include ecology hikes, birding walks, photography workshops, and an island history program. Visitors may also try their hand at outdoor skills like archery, cast-netting, fly-tying, and orienteering. Boat space is limited for this program, therefore reservations are required.

Cost: $10 for ages 16 and over; $5 for ages 8-15. The public is also welcome to use their own boats to travel to the Refuge and participate in the day’s activities at no charge.

There are six local schools in Savannah that have been identified to possibly become one of the first Opportunity School Districts in the State.

This will come in the form of an amendment to the voted on in the upcoming Nov. 8 election.

This could mean big changes for the children and our community.

Local unit PTAs have invited speakers from National and Georgia State PTA, Chatham County Public Schools, and other knowledgeable individuals to speak about the impact this will have on our community.

You will hear from experts, review the wording on the ballot and allot time for questions of the panel.

Please make plans to attend so our community can be as informed as possible about your upcoming vote on Amendment 1.

The first full weekend of each month means free weekend access to some of nearby museums through Bank of America’s Museums on Us program including the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah.

Join the Society of Women Engineers Oct. 1 2016 for the Brain & Brawn 5K & 5K Challenge, mixing fun, family, science and exercise for everyone to enjoy.

If you don’t want to just run a 5K, then sign up for our 5K Challenge to put your brain and your legs to the test.

Each participant in the 5K Challenge must complete 6 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related activities along the course.

These art classes for ages 2-5 are designed to help children develop fine motor skills and encourage creativity through the visual arts. Students will learn color and shape recognition, how to use art tools, and a variety of other concepts while expressing themselves using an array of media and methods. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tuesday afternoons Oct. 4 – Nov. 1 (Five week session)
Handbuilt Pottery: Function & Form
“Handbuilding” is working with clay by hand using only simple tools, not the pottery wheel. In this course participants will learn basic clay handbuilding techniques such as slab, pinch and coil and will complete several functional works of art. Five 2-hour sessions.

Dance Theatre of Harlem Master Dance Class
Taught by the company director, ballet master or a company member, each master class emphasizes focus, discipline, and classical technique as practiced at Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Family Fun: Clay Autumn Leaf Bowls
In this workshop each participant will use real leaves and terra cotta clay to create a trio of bowls or dishes. After works dry they will be bisque fired and clear glazed before being returned.
