About Moon River Pediatrics
Moon River Pediatrics offers a model of healthcare that feels completely different from a traditional practice. Moon River Pediatrics offers: limited practice size, longer visits, minimal-to-no wait times, direct access, quality care, convenience, continuity of care, lactation support.
Breast milk is up to 90 percent water, so getting enough fluids will keep both you and your baby well-hydrated.
When you’re lactating, you may need up to 16 cups of water per day. Try to drink a cup of water every time you breastfeed.
As for coffee, tea, and other caffeinated beverages, keep in mind that small amounts of the stimulant can pass through your milk to your baby. Limiting your intake to 300 milligrams per day may help to avoid fussiness.
Find more tips from SouthCoast Health on what to eat and drink while breastfeeding here.
Your diet is an important component of overall wellness at every stage of life. For questions, concerns, and personalized recommendations, schedule an appointment to talk to one of SouthCoast Health primary care physicians about healthy eating by calling 912.691.3600, or find a provider online.

“Breastfeeding is a natural thing, but it doesn’t come natural to everyone,” Dickerson explained. “I can even speak from personal experience. I didn’t breastfeed my first child, because I had no experience in doing so. But when I became a nurse practitioner with SouthCoast Health and started working with our lactation consultants, I was able to successfully breastfeed my second child. The same can happen for any mom who has the right guidance.”
To help guide mothers who are considering breastfeeding, Dickerson answers questions commonly asked in her practice. See the Q&A here.
If you have any other questions about breastfeeding or if you’d like to meet with one of SouthCoast Health’s talented and qualified lactation specialties, call SouthCoast Health’s Richmond Hill pediatric office today at 912-527-5352.

Breastfeeding can be hard, especially for new mothers.
SouthCoast Health’s Nurse Practitioner Lactation Specialist Haley Dickerson aims to help guide mothers who are considering breastfeeding. Dickerson answers a few of the questions here commonly asked in her office including: why is breastfeeding so important; what’s the process for new moms to get started breastfeeding; what are some of the biggest challenges new mothers face.
According to the American Academy Pediatrics Journal, while many mothers initiate breastfeeding, only 29 percent of babies are breastfed during their first 12 months.
Breastfeeding can be hard, especially for new mothers. Pair that with the fact that it can often be difficult to find trusted information and medical professionals to aid in the process, it’s no wonder many moms turn to formula.

We appreciate the Safe Sleep post by Savannah pediatrician Dr Brandy Gheesling on the Pediatric Associates of Savannah web site here.
Dr. Gheesling writes: “As I prepare for the arrival of my third child, I have been busy getting everything together for the nursery. There are so many different gadgets and sleeping devices available, so I thought it would be a good time to review what the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) currently recommends for safe sleep. “
“Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death of a seemingly healthy baby less than 1 year of age that usually occurs while they are sleeping.Sadly, per the AAP Policy Statement on SIDS published in 2016, “Approximately 3,500 infants die annually in the US from sleep related deaths, including SIDS and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed.”
Dr. Gheesling reminds us that parents’ behaviors and health can also affect our baby’s SIDS risk.
“Parents should avoid smoke exposure, alcohol, and illicit drug use during pregnancy and after birth.Pregnant women should obtain regular and early prenatal care. Breastfeeding is recommended and has been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS by 50% if the baby is exclusively breastfed for the first month of life,” writes Dr. Gheesling.
