SouthCoast Health Pediatrician Blaine Crossland
Does hand sanitizer work as well as hand-washing?
SouthCoast Health Pediatrician Blaine Crossland answers that question and shares some facts to consider when deciding whether to reach for hand sanitizer or if you should wash your hands with warm water and soap.
“People love hand sanitizer, because it’s a convenient option to keep in a purse, backpack, or car when you do not have access to soap and water,” said SouthCoast Health Pediatrician Blaine Crossland in Richmond Hill. “It’s great for kids too, because sometimes it’s hard to wrangle them to hold still long enough to wash their hands properly.”
Which is better? Hand-washing. Learn why here.

The physicians at SouthCoast Health trust the science of COVID-19 vaccines and encourage all patients to get the vaccine as soon they become eligible, regardless of healthcare practice location. The vaccine, which offers up to 95% protection against COVID-19, was deemed safe and effective by the FDA, Marrero said.

Dr Misal Patel
Proper handwashing is important now more than ever.
Physicians at SouthCoast Health in Savannah say to avoid buying hand sanitizer with less than 60 percent alcohol content. Studies show that antibacterial gel with any less alcohol doesn’t consistently kill germs.
“You touch your mouth, your eyes, your nose throughout the day many many times without realizing it,” Dr. Misal Patel of SouthCoast Health said. “You touch doorknobs, desks, phones, keyboards, so many things that other people come into contact with as well so the best thing to do is to keep your hands clean and be mindful of what you’re touching.”

Dr. Christa Jillard with SouthCoast Health’s High Risk Breast Cancer Clinic says she’s seen a drop in the number of mammograms since the pandemic began.
Dr Jillard says if you have any concerns or questions, you can definitely set up a telehealth appointment ahead of your screening to discuss them. She explained why mammograms are so important.
“The whole point of screening mammograms is specifically the fact that patients do not have symptoms. Period. And so we know that though years and years of research and patients who have come before other patients and have allowed us to do clinical trials that if we catch cancer at an earlier stage, the outcomes are just that much better, and so people die of breast cancer, and the great thing about the technological advancements is we find these things way before oftentimes women have symptoms. And so I really encourage every woman to continue being proactive about her health.”
Dr Jillard says its generally advised that women begin getting regular mammograms at age 40. That can differ if there is a family history of breast cancer.
