Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society

The 2018 Buddy Walk will be Saturday, Oct. 6 at 10AM in Forsyth Park in historic downtown Savannah.

The 13th annual one-mile fundraiser benefits the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS).

The Buddy Walk Program encourages participants of all ages and abilities. Carriages, strollers, wheelchairs, little red wagons and pets are all welcome. The goals are to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome and to positively influence local and national policy and practice. Family Fun Festival

The walk begins at 10AM with a Family Fun Festival being held immediately thereafter. A wide range of activities including face painting, bouncy houses, other games, as well as music and refreshments will last until 2pm.

Optim Health Therapy Savannah

The following is one of a series of weekly guest posts for SouthernMamas.com by Stacey McKenzie, Physical Therapist
Optim Therapy in Savannah
Pelvic Health & Wellness Program

See more of these guest posts here.

Have you ever done Kegel exercises? Kegels are exercises that target the pelvic floor, which are basically a bowl-shaped set of muscles that support your bladder, bowel, rectum and uterus.

But even if you regularly do Kegels, you could still suffer from urinary incontinence or pelvic pain or overactive bladder. The reason could be that you’re not firing your pelvic floor muscles properly. As many as 1 out of 2 women do not properly activate their pelvic floor muscles.

As a pelvic floor physical therapist, I can work with you one-on-one to make sure you are successfully activating your pelvic floor. It can be accomplished in as little as one visit!

At Optim Therapy’s Pelvic Health & Wellness Program, our goal is to provide a comfortable environment with individualized treatment programs to make sure you receive the most from each of your visits.

Optim Health Therapy Savannah

The following is one of a series of weekly guest posts for SouthernMamas.com by Stacey McKenzie, Physical Therapist
Optim Therapy in Savannah
Pelvic Health & Wellness Program

See more of these guest posts here.

If you’re suffering from pelvic pain, urinary incontinence or an overactive bladder, it might surprise you to know that physical therapy could be the answer. Your symptoms could be related to your pelvic floor muscles, which are basically a bowl-shaped set of muscles that support your bladder, bowel, rectum and uterus.

I’m a physical therapist who specializes in treating the pelvic floor. I can work with you one-on-one to make sure you are successfully activating your pelvic floor muscles.  It can be accomplished in as little as one visit!

At your first appointment, I’ll meet with you for an evaluation in a private, closed-door environment. We’ll talk one-on-one and go over all your treatment options.

There’s significant and exciting research out there about treatments for urinary incontinence and pelvic pain. Dry needling, for example, is just one of the many treatments offered at Optim Physical Therapy. It’s a form of therapy in which fine needles are inserted into myofascial trigger points (painful knots in muscles), tendons, ligaments, or near nerves in order to stimulate a healing response in painful musculoskeletal conditions.

The technique uses a “dry” needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle. It’s important to note that dry needling is not acupuncture, a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by acupuncturists.

Other pelvic floor treatments include soft tissue mobilization, body mechanics training, bladder training, bio-feedback and neuro re-education.

Firefighter fun run Richmond Hill

You’re invited to participate Friday Night Run @ 6:30PM Fri. Aug. 10 dedicated to former Savannah firefighter and Parris Island Firefighter  Mark Hummeldorf and his surviving family, Angie, and his two children, Chase and Emerson( whom Mark never got the chance to meet).

Mark was a firefighter, a former Marine and a local Richmond Hill resident AND a marathon runner. Mark, 33, was killed in an accident on Nov. 22, 2017.

Teams, or squads of Military Members and First Responders are encouraged to join this evening as all of our Military Members and First Responders join together to serve each and everyone of us, often at great sacrifice.

Runners, walkers, and cyclists are encouraged to wear red white and blue, or carry flags with them on the run!

The evening will begin with a moment of silence followed by a prayer. Angie and her two young children will participate.

Hosted by Georgia Game Changers Running Co.
