Produced by the Savannah Chatham Sustainability Coalition (SCSC) with the support of the City of Savannah and other sponsors. The SCSC is a non profit that is committed to collaborate with businesses and organizations to secure a sustainable future for all of the people in our community.

The theme for this year’s event is “Zero Waste” – this theme is in tandem with Earth Day Network (www.earthday.org) them – “End Plastic Pollution”. There will be exhibits throughout the festival in Forsyth Park that raise awareness of the amount of plastic used in daily life.

Festival will include:
* a large scale sculpture made of recycled plastic bottles created by an artist collective The Revival Society. These artists have been traveling to schools to engage the students in the bottle collection by creating Trash Monster Cans designed by students. www.therevivalsociety.org
* The Savannah Tree Foundation annual tree walk at 11AM, beginning at the Candler Oak near the Law School on Drayton.
* Other returning exhibitors include Caretta Research Project, 100 Miles, UGA Extension Chatham County, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, The Dolphin Project, Step Up Savannah, YFACE /Youth For A Cleaner Environment, Clean Coast, Sierra Club, SCAD Design for Sustainability, Go Green Armstrong, Savannah Urban Garden Alliance and our Ogeechee and Savannah Riverkeepers.

The 2018 Savannah Scottish Games – Sat. May 5 2018 at Bethesda Academy – are the fourth oldest Scottish Games in the southeastern United States.

The Savannah Scottish Games are a celebration of Scottish heritage and music, the Games truly have something for everyone to enjoy including entertainment by City Hotel and the Savannah Ceili Band, a Highland dancing competition, traditional heavy athletics, Celtic ale from Asheville, NC’s Highland Brewery, and a wide variety of Scottish art available for purchase.

The games will also feature the very popular traditional heavy athletic events including the caber toss and hammer throw, children’s activities, and border collie skill demonstrations.

Gates will open at 9AM and closing ceremonies will take place at 4:30PM Sat. May 5 2018.

The Games will kick offer an exciting day of some annual favorites including the highly anticipated Heavy Athletics Competition. Kilt-donning athletes will battle it out in a variety of traditional events including the Caber Toss, Sheaf Toss, Scottish Hammer Throw, Open Stone Put. The most spectacular event is the Caber Toss – ‘ye casting of the bar’.

The 2018 USIR Highland Dancing Southern Regional Championships, one of six competitions held throughout the U.S. each spring, will also take place on May 5 at the Savannah Scottish Games. Five age groups will compete in four dances, with the top three winners in each group at Savannah eligible to compete in the 2018 USIR National Championship.

The A-Town Get Down Art & Music Festival will return to Savannah for its 8th year on Sat. April 21 2018, noon-10PM on Indian Street – Under the Bridge, between Fahm and Warner Streets.

The festival, held each year in memory and honor of SCAD student Alex “A-Town” Townsend, operates with the mission of increasing access to art and music experiences throughout the Savannah community. There will be endless entertainment for attendees of all ages.

Free monthly Young Explorers Club 

The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge hosts a preschoolers “Young Explorers Club” on the first Tuesday of each month.

The free, hour-long monthly program for 3-4 year-olds starts at 10AM on the first Tuesday of each month.  There will be story time, crafts, snacks, and take-home activities all about this month’s topic.

The programs are at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center (694 Beech Hill Lane Hardeeville, SC 29927).

Each month, a different animal or method of conservation will be highlighted. Juniors of Girl Scout Troop 30387 have designed the monthly programs as their service project for completing the Bronze Award. The themes are:

June – Alligators
July – Sea Turtles
August – Spiders
September – Fish
October – Butterflies

Deep Speaks 

The Young Author Project, Deep Center’s introductory program, engages public middle school students with language & their stories to help them express themselves with skill, confidence & courage.

Twice a year, Deep Center releases anthologies featuring original, vivid &  fearless stories, poems & plays written by Deep’s young authors—Savannah-Chatham public middle school students in Deep’s Young Author Project.

Select young authors are chosen by their peers to read their published works at Deep Speaksthe Youth Author Project’s end-of-semester book launch & live reading in front of a live audience of about 500  family members, peers & community members from all over Savannah.

Come hear these literary works.

Seating is first-come, first-served. Doors open at 6PM. The readings will start promptly at 6:30PM.

FREE admission to museums, historic sites on Super Museum Sunday, Feb. 11

Coastal Heritage Society’s five Savannah museums will participate in Georgia History Festival’s s Super Museum Sunday 2018  on Feb. 11 2018. Guests can enjoy interactive exhibits and engaging tours at each site through hands-on, immersive activities that illustrate the narratives of Savannah’s past.

Coastal Heritage sites include:

*Georgia State Railroad Museum, 655 Louisville Rd, Savannah, GA
*Old Fort Jackson, 1 Fort Jackson Rd, Savannah, GA
*Pin Point Heritage Museum, 9924 Pin Point Ave, Savannah, GA
*Savannah Children’s Museum, 655 Louisville Rd, Savannah, GA
*Savannah History Museum, 303 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Savannah, GA
Cost: FREE! These will be free Sun. Feb. 11 during normal hours of operation at each site.

Highlights of this year’s special event programming include site tours, special office car tours and a short train ride at Georgia State Railroad Museum. Guests can enjoy enhanced Revolutionary War programming at Savannah History Museum, free play and children’s activities at Savannah Children’s Museum, learn about military history and view weapons demonstrations at Old Fort Jackson, and discover Gullah/Geechee culture through guided walking tours at Pin Point Heritage Museum.

Over sixty cultural institutions participate in this annual free family event. Each year Georgians and visitors alike experience our state’s rich history and cultural life through historic sites, house museums, art museums, and other points of interest in Savannah during “Super Museum Sunday.”

Fit Kids Fest Junior League Savannah free family event

You are invited to the FREE Savannah’s Fit Kids Fest on March 3 2018, 1-4PM at Savannah State University, 3219 College St.

This annual event promotes wellness for K-8 students, teaches the importance of growing a fit body and mind through a fun and interactive day designed for children of all ages and their parents. The goal is to improve health awareness and encourage children to lead a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Activities include tips on making healthy meals and snacks, exercise and other fun ways to get moving, as well as exploring resources for strengthening the mind.
