Free Peace Parade, Family Activities @ Savannah Day of Peace, Daffin Park

Monday, August 1st, 2022

Mayor Van Johnson will lead the Peace Parade Sept. 25. There also will be free, family-friendly activities, noon-4PM

The Mediation Center of the Coastal Empire, Inc. will host the inaugural Savannah Day of Peace on Sun. Sept. 25 2022, noon-4PM at Daffin Park, located at Victory Drive and Waters Avenue, in Savannah.

This event, which is free and open to the public, will offer opportunities for community members to increase the peace, counter violence, become conflict-resilient and encourage unity.

The Savannah Day of Peace will feature a Peace Parade led by Savannah Mayor Van Johnson and Savannah City Council members, Courageous Conversation Circles designed to encourage deeper dialogue to promote peacebuilding, a wellness area for mental health and a Youth Artists Corner. The 2022 Peacebuilder Award Honoree will also be announced, and the City of Savannah’s new Peace Proclamation will be on display.

The Mediation Center plans to maintain the momentum and to create a larger movement by organizing monthly peacebuilding events at different locations across Chatham County. These events will feature neighborhood-based activities designed to engage local community members, youth, faith leaders, law enforcement, business and professional associations in peacebuilding efforts.

According to the Savannah Police Department, Savannah had 1,134 violent crimes in 2021, including 34 homicides and 788 aggravated assaults. Violent crime categories that saw increases in Savannah from 2020 and 2021 include homicide (9%) and residential robbery (41%).

Community mediation provides more than just an alternative to litigation or violence — it offers constructive, intentional processes for resolving differences and conflicts between individuals, groups and organizations. Ultimately, mediation reinforces the social infrastructure undergirding society and builds bridges across identity, sector, class and ideological divides.

How to help a Savannah 7-year-old diagnosed with ALD

Seven-year-old Hesse Elementary School student @ Hesse Elementary School in Savannah suffering from rare genetic disease featured in the 1992 film “Lorenzo’s Oil” needs the community’s help.

_______________________

The grandmother of a Hesse Elementary School student suffering from a rare genetic disease is asking for the community’s help.

Leigh Griner’s 7-year-old grandson, Grayson Cronin, was recently diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). A rare genetic disease primarily affecting boys, ALD, if left untreated, deteriorates the brain rapidly and ultimately leads to a vegetative state. The subject of the 1992 film “Lorenzo’s Oil,” ALD typically
claims a diagnosed boy’s life within 10 years of diagnosis.

Grayson’s brain MRI revealed that he has cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, the most severe form
of ALD. If Grayson doesn’t receive the necessary treatment soon, he could lose his vision, hearing, and eventually all motor function over the next six months to several years.

There is a potentially life-saving bone marrow transplant via the University of Minnesota. While that process is expected to be approved and covered by insurance, there will be many uncovered costs, such
as experimental drugs and nutritional supplements, in addition to travel and lodging during his
treatment and recovery periods. Other options within and outside of the U.S. include gene therapy and supplemental medications, such as Lorenzo’s Oil, that can help slow down the progression of the disease in the meantime.

You can help by donating to a GoFundMe, “Help Grayson’s Fight Against ALD” here.

Donations in any amount are welcome.

“I also ask for prayer and encouragement for my son, Jonathan, who is a single father to Grayson and Nathan,” said Grayson’s grandmother Leigh Griner. “We are thankful that Jonathan can work remotely, but life has been emotionally overwhelming, and his work has suffered. So, I want to do anything possible to lighten his load in the upcoming months of treatments and uncertainties.”

Whippoorwill Farms SC Annual Pumpkin Rescue: Donate your pumpkins after Halloween to feed to farm animals

Sunday, October 24th, 2021

Donate Pumpkin Rescue 2021 Savannah Whippoorwill Farms SC Ridgeland

Every year Whippoorwill Farms in Ridgeland, South Carolina has an annual pumpkin rescue to reduce waste and recycle.

The pumpkin rescue is on for 2021. For the month of October, November and December, Whippoorwill will take your carved, whole or unpainted pumpkins.

Bring them to the Forsyth Farmers Market, the Hilton Head Farmers Market or come straight to the farm and feed the whole, unpainted or carved unpainted pumpkins to the pigs yourself. The farm is always open for shopping but for these months, you can come feed your pumpkins and walk the farm by bringing one pumpkin per person as admission, no purchase required.

What’s accepted: pumpkins, gourds, corn, corn cobs and corn stalks, acorns or other nuts AND bagged leaves in brown bags. If you have a smelly, rotting pumpkin, please bring it to the farm directly.

Have a neighborhood that wants to participate? Have a designated drop off spot in your plantation or neighborhood and work together to collect and bring them out. Whippoorwill Farms will even pick up pumpkins for 300+ pumpkins.

Own a business and want to be a drop off location? Reach out to Whippoorwill Farms. They will list your business on their social media and list you as a drop off location on our flyers and website.

Last year, Whippoorwill Farms rescued almost 1,500 pumpkins from the landfill. The goal is to beat that number this year.

For location drop-offs & more info, contact Whippoorwill Farms @ 843-473-5231 or via email marissa@whippoorwillfarmssc.com

Remembering & celebrating Jason Statts of Savannah

Friday, September 17th, 2021

Jason Statts 2021 fest Savannah SCAD

Jason Statts of Savannah died Sept. 17 at Hospice Savannah.

Jason Statts, a 1996 SCAD graduate, was seriously wounded when an armed robber shot him in the neck on June 28, 2008, causing irreparable damage to Statts’ spinal column. Statts was a well-known and beloved professional graphic designer and local musician.

For years, Friends of Jason Statts have held an annual Savannah benefit to help subsidize medical care that Statts, a quadriplegic as a result of the shooting, requires.

This year the 12th Annual Statts Fest will be a celebration of Jason’s life 3-7PM Oct. 10 2021 at Starland Yard in Savannah. Learn more here.

There will be live music from Joe Nelson and James Pittman, Damon and the Sh*tkickers, and Bottles & Cans. There will also be food trucks, a raffle and Statts merchandise for sale. The celebration of life event will feature remarks by dear friends, a moment of remembrance and a slideshow of photos of Jason throughout the years.

Donations will be accepted at the door with a suggested donation of $10+/person. All money raised will go to Jason’s end of life care and outstanding medical bills.

The brainchild of longtime peers (through Statts’ many associations as a 1996 alumnus of SCAD, a professional art director, illustrator, and local musician), the inaugural Friends of Statts event was held at The Jinx in 2009. Over the years FOS has rallied in various venues and formats, but the essence is always the same: On this occasion in Savannah, we’re all Friends of Statts.
