July 14th, 2020

Savannah Chatham public schools

Savannah-Chatham School Board members approved modifications in July to the academic calendar for the 2020-21 School Year due to COVID-19.

The calendar modifications include a delay in the start of the school year. The approved calendar modification allow teachers to return August 3, 2020 and students to begin instruction virtually on August 19, 2020.

The modified calendar:
• Offers 170 days of instruction
• Provides 12 days of pre-planning and training before the first day of instruction
• Begins the school year on Wednesday, August 19, 2020
• Begins the school year in a virtual “E-Learning” Districtwide model
• Adds two staff planning days for teachers at the end of the school year
• Includes the strategic use of Districtwide “E-Learning Days” on the November 3, 2020 Election Day, at the start of Second Semester, and after St. Patrick’s Day

Proposed delayed school start for Savannah-Chatham Public Schools

July 11th, 2020

Savannah Chatham public schools calendar 2020-21 new modified

Savannah-Chatham Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ann Levett will make a recommendation to the Board of Education at their Thurs. July 16, 2020 meeting that the Academic Calendar for the 2020-21 school year be modified due to impacts created by COVID-19.

While the approved calendar for the upcoming school year originally called for a start date of Aug. 5, 2020, after reviewing public health data and hearing feedback from staff, parents and task force members, the Superintendent is advocating for a delayed start to the 2020-21 school year and other changes to the calendar.

Above is the recommended modified calendar that will be discussed at the July 16 Board of Education meeting.

With more than 37,000 students, the Savannah-Chatham County public school system is one of Georgia’s largest outside metro Atlanta.

Some Georgia school districts, such as Gwinnett and Richmond counties, are letting parents choose between in-person and online classes. Others are biding for more time. Bibb County schools have delayed the start of classes until after the Labor Day holiday Sept. 7 while officials weigh options, The Associated Press reported.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended resuming in-person classes for K-12 students as long as it can be done safely. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is rolling out guidance. Draft CDC documents obtained by The Associated Press say: “Decisions about how to open and run schools safely should be made based on local needs and conditions.”

SouthCoast Health experts answer ‘Can I go outside during the pandemic?

June 28th, 2020

southcoast health pediatricians Savannah Chatham county

The experts at SouthCoast Health in Savannah answer the question “Can I Go Outside During the Coronavirus Pandemic?”

The good news is the answer to this question is yes! You can still go outside and enjoy the fresh air, as long as you follow safety guidelines. In fact, many health experts recommend it. Going outside means you’re getting a break from being stuck in quarantine and soaking in some much-needed vitamin D.

But, if you do plan to go outside, make sure to follow these safety tips:

Since the coronavirus is spread through droplets made through actions such as coughing or sneezing, it’s best to still wear a mask if you plan to go outside. This will protect you from those droplets.

It’s best to keep up social distancing measures. Still plan to keep about six feet away from everyone around you. The good news is that it’s easier to do this while exploring outside versus being stuck in close corridors inside.

If you are in the high-risk category, unfortunately for you it is best to stay indoors still, unless you plan to sit outside or walk around in your own yard where you know no one else will enter.

The final conscious is: yes. It’s safe to go outside during the coronavirus pandemic. Make sure to follow the guidelines above.
