Daily Beach Walks, Marsh Treks, Turtle Talks & Seining @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center

Wednesday, July 25th, 2018

Tybee Island Beach Walks Marsh

The Tybee Island Marine Science Center offers daily Walks, Talks, & Treks programs: Sift ‘n’ Seine at 1PM; South Beach Walk at 2PM; Turtle Talk at 3PM; and Marsh Trek at 4PM.

Cost: All Walks, Talks, & Treks are $10 per person, $8 for science center members. Children ages 4 & younger are FREE! Program duration: 60 minutes.

You can register online at or stop by the center in person to sign up. Registration and payment are requested at least 30 minutes prior to program start time.

Sift ‘n’ Seine at 1PM

On the sift ‘n’ seine program, you’ll discover the marine life of the intertidal zone by pulling a 10 foot seine net through waist-deep water. Commonly caught organisms include pompanos, sea jellies, and crabs. After seining, you’ll explore the marine life of the sandy bottom by sifting various organisms from the wet sand on the beach. This program is recommended for participants ages 9 and older.

South Beach Walk at 2PM

South beach walks depart from the science center where you’ll join one of the marine science center’s knowledgeable marine science educators on a guided walk of Tybee’s south beach. Learn about the dynamics of Georgia’s barrier islands, the importance of the intertidal zone, the forces behind the waves, Tybee’s unique tidal surge, and the role that sand dunes perform in keeping Tybee protected.

Turtle Talk at 3PM

During the Turtle Talk, you’ll learn about anatomy and natural adaptations of sea turtles, discuss Tybee’s Sea Turtle Project conservation efforts, and get to meet the resident loggerhead sea turtle, Matthew. Based on program content, Turtle Talks are recommended for kids ages six and older.

Marsh Trek at 4PM

On a marsh trek, you’ll enjoy a hands-on exploration of Georgia’s salt marsh, searching the mud for fiddler crabs, snails, and more. Learn about adaptations necessary for survival in this environment, how the marsh functions as a nursery for many organisms, a filter for pollutants, and as an abundant food source. Please wear closed-toed, closed-heel shoes, such as rain boots or old tennis shoes (no flip flops or Crocs) and expect to get muddy. Marsh Treks meet off-site from the science center, on the north end of the island at Spanish Hammock. Directions are provided with paid program confirmation.

Register online for any of the above walks at

Optim Health Therapy Savannah

Stacey McKenzie, Physical Therapist Optim Therapy in Savannah

The following is a guest post for by Stacey McKenzie, Physical Therapist
Optim Therapy in Savannah
Pelvic Health & Wellness Program

Summertime for moms often means family vacations. It should be an exciting time, getting in the car, setting the GPS and heading out for a fun-in-the-sun getaway.

Unfortunately for many women, any trip longer than around the block can be a journey filled with calculated pit stops including some seedy gas station bathrooms and a few close calls.

If you’re dreading a road trip because you suffer from urinary incontinence or an overactive bladder, the good news is that physical therapy could be the answer. Yes, that’s right. There are physical therapists who specialize in treating the pelvic floor muscles, which support your bladder, bowel, rectum and uterus. The pelvic floor is very important and plays a key role in urinary continence, core stability, and sexual health.

Optim Therapy recently launched their Pelvic Health & Wellness Program and Physical Therapist Stacey McKenzie can work with you one-on-one to make sure you are successfully activating your pelvic floor.  It can be accomplished in as little as one visit.

Stacey is one of Optim Therapy’s dedicated therapy professionals, all of whom utilize a multi-disciplinary approach to providing patients with the best treatments and outcomes.

If you are interested in improving your pelvic health, please talk to your personal physician about a referral to physical therapy. If you have any questions, or need help with a referral, feel free to contact Stacey directly at, (912) 644-5333.

Savannah schools: Sex Ed Survey for Parents

Friday, July 20th, 2018

Voices for Schools Savannah Due to schedule constraints, some Savannah-Chatham County Public School students miss out on a formal Sexual and Health Education Curriculum in school.

Voices For Schools in Savannah is exploring the idea of bringing in educators from an outside educational non-profit (Voices for Schools is currently working on who that will be) to provide this education outside of the school day.

Please help Voices for Schools decide if there is enough interest in this by answering a few questions via this quick online survey here.

About Voices for Schools

Voices for Schools takes solution-focused, action oriented steps to address the needs of the Savannah Chatham County Public School System.
