See replicas of Columbus’ Niña & Pinta in Savannah, March 24-29

Friday, March 20th, 2015

Nina Pinta in beaufort, Savannah

On Tuesday, March 24, the ‘Pinta’ and the ‘Nina’, replicas of Columbus’ Ships, will open in Savannah.

The ships will be returning for their 2nd visit to River Street and docked at Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, until their departure early Monday morning March 30.

While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission charges are $8.00 for adults, $ 7.00 for seniors and $6.00 for students 5 – 16. Children 4 and under are Free. The ships are open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. No reservations necessary.

School trips

Teachers or organizations wishing to schedule a 30 minute guided tour with a crew member should call 1-787-672-2152 or email Minimum of 15. $5.00 per person. No Maximum. Visit The Columbus Foundation website at

The ‘Nina’ was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools. Archaeology magazine called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The “Pinta” was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the fifteenth century.

Both ships tour together as a new and enhanced ‘sailing museum’ for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the ‘caravel’, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world.

The ships arrive on Monday, March 23 & leave the morning of March 30. Next stop: Charleston April 2-12.

U-Pick Strawberry Season Coming Soon to Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, Savannah

Monday, March 16th, 2015

You-Pick Strawberries @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, Savannah

Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm continues to offer fresh berry fruits for picking from the fields when in season. The harvest season is heavily weather dependent. None of the 2015 berry-picking fields have opened yet.

Look at the chart below. Call 912-921-5460 to learn the status of the field prior to arriving, as poor weather or large crowds may pick the field clean well before the 12 noon scheduled closing. The best time to pick is first thing in the morning at 9 am (as it is cooler, too).

No pets allowed in the fruit picking fields during your harvest. Children must be supervised to prevent plant trampling. You are responsible to pay for all fruits (ripe or unripe) picked during a visit.

More details here.

COST: $2.50 per pound. Containers provided. Bring cash.

The gardens have picnic tables scattered around the grounds if you want to make a picnic out of your strawberry picking.

Blackberries mid-May – late June $3.00/lb. 2015 season not yet started
Blueberries April – late June $3.00/lb. 2015 season not yet started

Located south of Savannah on the banks of the Ogeechee River, Fort McAllister showcases the best-preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy. The earthworks were attacked seven times by Union ironclads but did not fall until 1864 — ending Gen. William T. Sherman’s “March to the Sea.”  Visitors can explore the grounds with cannons, a furnace, bombproof, barracks, palisades and more, while a Civil War museum contains artifacts, a video and gift shop.

Nestled among giant live oaks, Spanish moss and salt marsh, this park is a beautiful location for camping, fishing, boating and picnicking. Seven cabins sit on stilts near the marsh, surrounded by palm trees and palmettos. The shaded campground is bordered by tidal Redbird Creek, a boat ramp, fishing dock and nature trail. A large picnic area offers river views and playgrounds, while another boat ramp provides access to the Ogeechee River.

Pre-K Savannah Chatham public schools 2015-16

Interested in applying to the free pre-K program offered at Savannah-Chatham public schools for the 2015-16 school year?

Pre-K applications for the free, lottery-funded Pre-K programs for 2015-16 at Savannah-Chatham County public schools will be be available online and at the Pre-K school sites on March 19,2015

Deadline to submit the application is April 2, 2015.

The Pre-K lottery will be April 21, 2015.

Details here.

This free, state-funded Pre-K is open to all children who are 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 residing in Chatham County.

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has 60 Georgia Lottery funded Pre-K classes with additional classes at Coastal Empire Montessori.  See the list of Savannah-Chatham public schools that offer the free Pre-K here.

Wait List

After the lottery, if your child does not get into the school of choice, you can go to your desired school and complete a Wait List form.

If your child is on the Wait List and you are contacted about an open space, you will have 24 hours to register your child. After that time, schools call the next child on the Wait List. If you decline the seat, your child will be removed from the wait list; however, if you are on other wait lists, your child will remain on them.

After the lottery runs, if your child is on three Wait Lists, you can remove him/her from a wait list without impacting the status of other wait lists. The same rules apply if you fill out a wait list form and decide to remove your child from one of them.

Some Savannah private preschools and childcare facilities – including Maggie’s Morning School & Childcare Network (which has 3 Savannah locations & 1 coming soon to Pooler)- also offer the state-funded, free Pre-K program and have different application deadlines. Please contact those facilities for their application deadlines.

Partnering with the Savannah Chapter of the National Wildlife Turkey Federation (NWTF), Georgia Southern University, Friends of the Savannah Coastal Wildlife Refuges, University of Georgia (Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and Marine Education Center & Aquarium), this year’s Discovery Day will be filled with fun, wildlife-related educational activities for all ages.
