U-Pick strawberries no longer offered at Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in Savannah

Monday, February 25th, 2019

We’re sad to learn that a longtime Savannah spring tradition has come to an end.

Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in Savannah will no longer offer pick-your-own strawberries.  Nor will these gardens on Canebrake Road offer pick-your-own blackberries in summer.

“The Gardens will no longer have pick-your-own berries due to our budget in keeping the fields up but we are turning that area into a teaching garden,” writes Kahlitah Greene of Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens via email.

We know many of you have enjoyed taking your kids there for years to pick berries, picnic and enjoy the gardens. The gardens have offered pick-your-own berries since 1994.

The following farms have early strawberries this year and offer pick-your own. Please call ahead & check their Facebook pages for updates on the strawberry fields’ status.

Please let us know about other pick-your-own berry farms in the area by emailing anne@southernmamas.com

U-pick thornless blackberry season 2018, Savannah

Thursday, May 24th, 2018

U-pick blackberry picking Savannah

U-pick thornless blackberry season 2018 is now open through June @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, Savannah.

U-pick blackberry fields are open:
Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays 9AM-1PM
Saturdays 10AM-1PM
Tuesdays 10AM-1PM
Closed Sundays & Mondays

The fields will be closed June 2-June 4 and reopen at 10AM June 5.

Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm offers fresh berry fruits for picking from the fields when in season. The harvest season is weather dependent.

Call 912-921-5460 to learn the status of the field prior to arriving, as poor weather or large crowds may pick the field clean well before the 1PM scheduled closing. The best time to pick is first thing in the morning (as it is cooler, too).

No pets allowed in the fruit picking fields during your harvest. Children must be supervised to prevent plant trampling. You are responsible to pay for all fruits (ripe or unripe) picked during a visit. Remember, blackberries do not further ripen once picked, so only focus on berries that fall/tug off the stem easily. If they’re still “glued on”, they’re sour and definitely not ready to pick.

COST: $3 per pound. Containers provided.  Cash and credit card (debit cards as well if they have a major credit card symbol on them) are accepted.

The gardens have picnic tables scattered around the grounds if you want to make a picnic out of your trip.

CGBG does NOT offer a picking service.

Apple picking, petting farm in North Georgia

Monday, September 14th, 2009

hillcrest-orchards-logoTime to head to North Georgia to pick apples. Or, at least, partake in apple picking festivities.

The annual Apple Pickin Jubliee at Hillcrest Orchards in Ellijay – happening this upcoming weekend Sept. 19 &  20 and next weekend Sept. 26 & 27 –  has everything that you associate with autumn and farms: apple bobbing and corn shelling, cloggers and country bands, mule-drawn wagon rides, homemade fried apple pies and caramel apples, and, of course, pippin-picking from dwarf trees.

Kids can milk Buttercup, the farm’s milk cow; meet Barney the Talking Bull; watch a live bee demo; cheer on pigs racing toward an Oreo cookie; and compete in the John Deere Derby pedal tractor trike track. The farm is open all day, 9 am-6 pm Saturdays and Sundays. Click here for directions and more info.

Admission: $5. Separate $3 admission to petting farm.

All activities are available every weekend in October, too.
