Bitty & Beau’s coffee shop – which gives people with disabilities the chance to work – is opening in Savannah this month.

Founder Amy Wright named the shop after her two children who have Down syndrome.

The mission of the Wilmington-NC based organization is to employ those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities including Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and more.

The Savannah shop will be at 319 West Congress St. and is expected to open in October.

Wright anticipates hiring approximately 20 employees with disabilities, along with a small support staff at the Savannah coffee shop, which is the third Bitty & Beau’s location. The second location is in Charleston, SC @ 159 Church St.

Wright, recipient of the CNN Hero of the Year Award for 2017, said in her acceptance speech, “My children are not broken. My employees are not broken. 200 million people across the world living with an intellectual or developmental disability are not broken. What is broken is the lens through which we view people with disabilities. Bitty & Beau’s Coffee is a new lens, one that changes the way that people see other people.”

“Tales from the Marsh Side: A Day of Science” @ Fort Pulaski National Monument in Savannah, Sun. Oct. 14  2018.

Cost: An entrance fee of $7 per person is charged; ages 15 and under are free.

The day will highlight the natural resources of the park and its surrounding environment, with a focus on the ecological importance of the Georgia coast and the ways humans have always attempted to control this wild and wonderful place—with mixed results.

* 9:30AM: a ranger-led Shoreline Hike, where participants will discover what makes our little corner of the earth so unique and worth protecting.

* 1PM: Join a ranger for Man Versus Nature hike to learn about the natural and manmade forces at work on Cockspur Island, and how these forces will impact the park in the future.

*2PM: Terrapin Turtle Takeover, when a representative from the Terrapin Education Research Program of Savannah will bring a few of his turtle friends to teach us all about Diamondback Terrapins and how we can help protect these special residents of coastal Georgia.

Additional science activities for all ages will be taking place throughout the day.

Remember that even in October temperatures can be quite high in Georgia, and the heat can sneak up on you. Bring plenty of water. There is always a chance the trails will be muddy and buggy, so bring appropriate clothes, shoes and insect repellant. Please arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time of your hike.

You’ll find it in the parents featured on the SouthCoast Health Web site posted entitled SouthCoast Pediatrician and Wife Raise Awareness for Childhood Cancer.

The post spotlights SouthCoast Health pediatrician Dr. William Webb and wife Danielle, a clinical pediatric dietitian at Memorial Health, who are continuing to fight for childhood cancer research after the death of their son four years ago. Three-year-old William Webb II of Savannah faced a rare form of childhood cancer, stage IV neuroblastoma, with remarkable spirit.

“He would want us to get out there and improve the situation for others,” Dr. Webb says in the post.

William’s parents have created the nonprofit Warriors for William Foundation to raise money for childhood cancer research. The foundation’s logo is an outline of a boy in a superhero costume, a direct nod to their son.

The Warriors for William Foundation hosts fundraising events including the Warriors for William 5K. The sixth annual race returns Oct. 28 2018 at J.F. Gregory Park in Richmond Hill.
