Sensory Soft Sunday for children with autism Savannah Savannah Children’s Museum will continue to host Sensory Soft Sunday as a unique offering for families with children who have special needs. Savannah Children’s Museum will open from 9-11am on Nov. 15 and Dec. 13 to provide these families an opportunity to make connections while enjoying SCM’s many exhibits in a sensory friendly way.

Through discussions with the special needs community, Savannah Children’s Museum discovered that there are few offerings of this kind in the region. Museum staff feel it is especially important to provide all children, regardless of age or ability, an opportunity to experience all that Savannah Children’s Museum has to offer.

The goal of Sensory Soft Sunday: provide an exclusive time period for the families of children with special needs in order to reduce anxiety and overstimulation that can occur when the museum is open to the general public. The trains at Georgia State Railroad Museum, our adjacent facility, will not operate during this exclusive time period, to eliminate the sound of whistles.

To promote a calm atmosphere, the number of attendees is limited. The staffing, however, is not reduced so families may have increased staff interaction as desired or needed. A designated ‘quiet zone’ is located in the orange caboose at Savannah Children’s Museum.

Pre-registration for Sensory Soft Sunday is required and payment is due upon arrival. To register, email Liz Stratford at Lstratford@chsgeorgia.org.

Sensory Friendly Easter Bunny Savannah Mall

This Saturday March 28, the Caring Bunny will greet families at the lower level of Center Court in the Savannah Mall, located at 14045 Abercorn St.

With an atmosphere free from bright, flashing lights, or high-energy music, all children with different abilities are invited to meet Caring Bunny at this free event from 8-10 AM March 28 2015.

Children with autism have senses that can be oversensitive or under-developed, which affects how they experience different environments, making background noises unbearably loud or confusing. This can cause anxiety or even physical pain.

Savannah Mall’s Caring Bunny greets children in a calm environment, in an effort to make the Easter Bunny experience enjoyable for everyone. In addition, families will be given a 5 x 7 photograph from the visit and a complimentary ride on the children’s train.

March is Autistic Awareness Month. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention most recent data suggests an average of one in 110 children have an autism spectrum disorder. Autistic children’s senses can be oversensitive or under-developed, which affects how they experience different environments, making background noises unbearably loud or confusing. This can cause anxiety or even physical pain.

About The Matthew Reardon Center

MRCA was founded by native Savannahian Kim Reardon and is named for her son. In 1993 when he was in kindergarten, Matthew Reardon contracted viral encephalitis, which caused permanent brain injury and epilepsy. At that time, Savannah had did not have facilities to treat children with serious illness such as his. The Reardon family and friends donated money to Memorial Health University Medical Center, which made medical care for neurological impairment available locally. Through their experiences, the Reardons learned that children suffering from neurological disorders have many needs beyond those that are physical. It was from this realization that the Matthew Reardon Center was born. As the incidence of autism increased dramatically, The Center refocused its resources specifically on the unique needs of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism operates the only year-round, day school in southeast Georgia for children with ASD. Furthermore, it promotes outreach and advocacy through forged partnerships with existing medical, educational, and community services in order to help these children reach their full potential and enhance their quality of life as well as that of their families. The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, and relies on support of those who share our passion and vision. For more information, visit www.matthewreardon.org.
