The Junior League of Savannah will host its 67th Annual Thrift Sale on Saturday, October 4 at the Savannah Civic Center.

This annual event draws thousands of shoppers from the across the Lowcountry to purchase both needed household goods and unique treasures. Merchandise includes appliances, children’s clothes and toys, holiday decorations, books, house wares, linens, sporting goods, furniture and much more. New this year: the sale will also feature adult women’s formalwear and business attire.

Preview Party & Auction

The community is invited to celebrate the kickoff of the Junior League of Savannah’s Thrift Sale by attending the annual Preview Party and Auction on Friday, October 3. The evening will begin at 5:30pm with early bird shopping on the Thrift Sale floor, followed by a cocktail party and silent auction at 6pm. Thrift Sale, Free Parking

The Annual Thrift Sale is the primary fundraising event of the Junior League. The money raised is returned to the community through various League projects and the training of League members to be leaders in the community.

Projects funded by the sale include supplying weekend food to school aged, low-income children through America’s Second Harvest: Backpack Buddies, cooking meals for families at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire, Fit Kids Fest, and various other projects throughout the year. Tinkerbell, along with a couple of her fairy friends, will be hosting three one-hour-long pixie parties.

Save the date for The Nutcracker in Savannah 2014

Recognized as the premiere dance company in Southeast Georgia, Savannah Ballet Theatre (the official company of Savannah Ballet School of Dance) is best known locally for its annual production of the perennial holiday favorite, The Nutcracker in Savannah. Using WWII-era Savannah as the backdrop, it is an event that has become a tradition for the community and one that honors the history and unique character of the region.

Spanish tall ship El Galeón Andalucía will visit historic River Street on Oct. 24 – Nov. 2 2014 during its five-month tour of the east coast sponsored by the National Air, Sea & Space Foundation.

The foundation also will invite school groups to the El Galeón for complimentary tours & the chance to participate in the “Future Explorers Education Program,” part of the nonprofit foundation’s mission to educate youth. Details here. 

For Halloween, the ship will transform into a Haunted Pirate Ship. Details below. 

The 170-foot, 500-ton ship is the only Galeón class vessel sailing today. Five of the seven decks will be available for the public to tour.

It carries an all-Spanish crew of 25 sailors, several of which will welcome visitors aboard when they tour this one-of-a-kind vessel.

El Galeón Andalucía was featured in the NBC series “Crossbones” starring John Malkovich as the legendary pirate Blackbeard which aired this summer.

* Blackbeard’s Treasure Hunt (through downtown Savannah) – Sat. Oct. 25

* Haunted Pirate Ship – the ship will pay homage to Savannah, one of the most haunted cities in America, when it is transformed into a haunted pirate ship Oct. 31. For ages 18 & older.
