Old Fort Jackson in Savannah will reopen to the general public Fri. Oct. 14 at 9AM.

Moving forward, Fort Jackson will be open during its regularly scheduled hours 9AM-5PM daily.

Exciting update: ArtStart for preschoolers @ the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina mid-island on Hilton Head has been rescheduled.

This 3-week workshop for kids ages 2-5 is a series of visual arts classes designed to teach color and shape recognition, how to use art tools, and a variety of other concepts allowing students to express themselves using an array of media and methods.

Early Detection of Speech and Language Disorders

Does your preschooler’s language skills lag behind his peers or siblings? Does she throw tantrums or get frustrated over an inability to communicate verbally? Do others have trouble understanding your child’s speech?

If you answered yes to any of these, your child may have a speech/language disorder. A certified speech/language pathologist can evaluate your child and recommend a plan of action. Early intervention is the key to preventing difficulties in learning later on.

If your child exhibits any of these red flags, ask your pediatrician for a referral to a speech/language pathologist for further evaluation:

Doesn’t smile or interact with others (birth-3 months)
Makes few sounds (7-12 months)
Doesn’t understand what others say (7 months-2 years)
Doesn’t put words together to make sentences (1-1/2-2 years)
Has trouble playing and talking with other children (2-3 years)

Camouflage Costumes  
Are you getting your costume ready for Halloween? Bring your little one to the UGA Aquarium for some inspiration. During the Camouflage Costumes public program, you’ll learn about how animals disguise themselves by observing reptiles and their camouflage colors. Kids will have the opportunity to touch some of these no-so-spooky creatures; compare how marine animals use camouflage to disguise themselves by trying on crab costumes; visit the touch tanks & make their own animal costumes. For ages 4-10. Kids must be accompanied by an adult.

Owl-o-ween Night Hike
Get into the spirit of Halloween by taking part in an interpretive night hike on the Jay Wolf Nature Trail at the UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium. Staff will lead participants down the trail while listening for owls, insects, frogs, and other night noises. Participants may even spot deer or bats during the hike. Open to all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are now available for Frogwarts annual Harry-Potter inspired event hosted by Coastal Heritage Society in Savannah.

Frogwarts is Sun. Oct. 16 2016, 11AM-3PM. Georgia State Railroad Museum and Savannah Children’s Museum will transform into a magical fall festival for a Harry Potter-themed day of fun

This year’s studies will incorporate STEAM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) which helps encourage critical thinking, creative problem solving & experiential learning through each fun and engaging activity.

Guests are invited to arrive at Frogwarts School of Magic in costumes and will be assigned by the Sorting Hat into one of four houses: Croak, Hoppin, Ribbit or Slime.

Classes will include Wand Making, Potions, Symbology with Tails of the Lowcountry, Fortune Telling, Defense Against the Dark Arts: Glow-in-the-Dark Fun!, Care of Magical Creatures with Georgia Reptile Society, Herbology and an adventure through The Forbidden Forest in the Savannah Children’s Museum Maze. Visitors can also take a ride on the Frogwarts Express, our steam locomotive.
