free preschooler program at Savannah National Wildlife Refuge The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge hosts a preschoolers “Young Explorers Club” on the first Tuesday of each month.

The free, hour-long monthly program for 3-4 year-olds starts at 10AM on the first Tuesday of each month.  There will be story time, crafts, snacks, and take-home activities all about this month’s topic.

The programs are at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center (694 Beech Hill Lane Hardeeville, SC 29927).

Each month, a different animal or method of conservation will be highlighted. Juniors of Girl Scout Troop 30387 have designed the monthly programs as their service project for completing the Bronze Award. The themes are:

August – Spiders
September – Fish
October – Butterflies
November – Turkeys
December – Ducks

U-pick thornless blackberry season 2016, Savannah

U-pick blackberry picking Savannah

U-pick thornless blackberry season is now open on a limited basis @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, Savannah.

Picking hours will be Monday-Thursday and Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm (Note there’s no berry picking on Fridays or Sundays).

Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm offers fresh berry fruits for picking from the fields when in season. The harvest season is heavily weather dependent.

Call 912-921-5460 to learn the status of the field prior to arriving, as poor weather or large crowds may pick the field clean well before the 1PM scheduled closing. The best time to pick is first thing in the morning at 9 am (as it is cooler, too).

No pets allowed in the fruit picking fields during your harvest. Children must be supervised to prevent plant trampling. You are responsible to pay for all fruits (ripe or unripe) picked during a visit.

COST: $3 per pound. Containers provided.  Cash and credit card (debit cards as well if they have a major credit card symbol on them) are accepted.

The gardens have picnic tables scattered around the grounds if you want to make a picnic out of your trip.

Runway in Bloom Savannah Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens You are invited to “Runway in Bloom” – a fashion show at Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, Savannah, on May 29, 2016.

Proceeds help fund the future children’s garden at Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens.

Supporters of the children’s garden believe in the importance of teaching our children about our beautiful environment through hands on learning experiences, which will be a vital part of our children’s garden.

The concept,” Runway in Bloom” is to inspire and showcase the creativity of local designers. It will include collections from Savannah College of Art and Design fashion designers, fine retail apparel and small boutiques.

The theme for the show and collections are designs inspired by nature and flowers.

Featured collections will be made from botanicals and flowers found at the gardens designed by Stephanie Tedder and Hayley Larson, the event producer and co-producer of “Runway in Bloom”.

Held at the Visitor Center, activities and programs include safe solar gazing, displays on astronomy, astronomical equipment and apps, astronomical art and more. This event is free and open to the public. Return later that evening for our springtime ‘Gazing in the Garden’ event, too!

In partnership with the Oglethorpe Astronomical Association, enjoy the out-of-doors night with “space fun” and stargazing.

After the mid-May sun sets at 8:16 pm and the sky darkens, the first-quarter moon becomes more visible and doesn’t set until around midnight. Come to the Event Field for viewing of the waxing crescent moon, constellations and Milky Way Galaxy through various-size telescopes that Association members (or you) bring. The evening wraps up at 10 pm.

Dress for the evening weather, bring a favorite cold or hot beverage, lawn chair/blanket and snack basket (alcohol is prohibited). Be aware that fire ants may be under your blanket or chair on your particular chosen spot on the Event Field.

Fort Pulaski has close ties with the national pastime as it was played by union soldiers in the fort during the American Civil War.

The two-hour programs will highlight baseball at Fort Pulaski and get you active and playing. This will be a spring training of sorts as park staff teaches the differences between the modern game of baseball and what was played at the fort in 1862. The last hour of each session will conclude with an exhibition game with all of the participants.

No reservations are required. Gloves are not needed. Bring some comfortable sneakers and be ready for some fun bringing baseball back to Fort Pulaski.

You-Pick Strawberry fields are open @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens Savannah.

The u-pick fields are open Mon.-Thurs. and Saturday. (no picking on Fridays or Sundays), 9AM-1PM or until the field is picked clean (whichever occurs first) U-pick strawberries are $2.50 per pound.  Shop for jam, jellies & preserves, too.

Call 912-921-5460 to learn the status of the field prior to arriving, as poor weather or large crowds may pick the field clean well before the 1 pm scheduled closing.

The best time to pick is first thing in the morning at 9 am (as it is cooler, too).

No pets allowed in the fruit picking fields during your harvest. Children must be supervised to prevent plant trampling. You are responsible to pay for all fruits (ripe or unripe) picked during a visit.

The gardens have picnic tables scattered around the grounds if you want to make a picnic out of your strawberry picking.

New Admission Cost

Beginning April 1 2016, Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens will start charging admission to the Gardens.

Admission: $5 for ages 17 & older; $3 for ages 6-16; free for ages 5 & younger

Seuss Fest 2016 @ Savannah Children’s Museum

Save the date: Savannah Children’s Museum’s annual Seuss Fest will be Sat. Feb. 27, 10AM-4PM.

The event will be filled with Dr. Seuss stories, Seuss-inspired crafts and games.

Event attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character, in honor of the children’s book author.

On-site museum educators will lead the group with Seuss stories, games and activities. Activities of note include a “Truffula Tree” making station and an “Oh The Places You’ll Go” area with dress-up costumes and a photo opportunity.

The Savannah Children’s Theatre will present musical performances at 12pm and 2pm from Seussical the Musical.

Don’t miss this Seuss-tastic day of fun for kids of all ages.

Event is included in price of regular admission. Free for CHS members.

During the school year, Savannah Children’s Museum offers daily programming Wednesdays through Sundays.

School Hours: August 30th – May 30th
Monday & Tuesday: CLOSED (large groups)
Wednesday – Saturday: 10:00am – 4:00pm
Sunday: 11:00am – 4:00pm
