The annual Savannah Local Author Day & Flannery Birthday Party is back!

With a local author day sponsored by The Book Lady Bookstore, the Flannery O’Connor outdoor fair and the quirkiest parade in Savannah will be Sun. March 27, 1-4PM in Lafayette Square in downtown Savannah.

This free event that’s open to the public will feature creative activities, vendors, and lots of Flannery costumes. The annual celebration of acclaimed author and Savannah native Flannery O’Connor’s birthday will offer free family fun, live music, a wacky parade, birthday cake, and more.

Local and regional authors will be on hand and you are invited to stroll around the book tables and meet poets, children’s book authors, and fiction and nonfiction writers.

You’ll also be welcomed to visit the Flannery O’Connor Home (free) to view Flannery’s Depression-era childhood home.

Live music throughout the event provided by singer-songwriters and musicians from Savannah local bands.

Attendees are invited to walk in the parade, bring handmade signs and sing along.

Costumes inspired by Flannery O’Connor characters, settings or the author’s life are optional & encouraged.

This event is free and open to the public!

March 4, 6-8PM PULSE Free Friday Night & Evening Performance: “Spaces: A Multimedia Performance with Dance, Sound and Interactive Visuals by Tybee Ballet Theater (Britt Bacon, Vinay Arora, Kate Petit). Enjoy activities in the museum between 6-8PM including a 360 video photo booth and LED pin making workshop (Ages 16+).

March 5, 10AM-5PM PULSE Free Family Day at the Jepson Center. Enjoy a day of free admission to the Jepson Center to explore the new PULSE exhibitions. Hands on art making activities 1-4PM only.

St. Patrick’s 2022 events in Savannah, Tybee, Hilton Head Is. 

The Greening of the Forsyth Park Fountain, parades on Hilton Head Is., Tybee Is. & in Savannah – all are part of the special month of March in Savannah. These will be even more special this year because these festivities haven’t happened since 2019 due to COVID.

(No Tara Feis Irish Celebration this year. This beloved family-friendly event was cancelled under Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach in 2018 along with the Savannah Children’s Book Festival.)

FREE 10th Annual Fit Kids Fest, Sat. Feb. 19 2022 @ Savannah Children’s Museum
Annual event promotes wellness for K–12 students

Junior League of Savannah will host its annual 2022 Fit Kids Fest at a new location: the Savannah Children’s Museum, on Sat. Feb. 19 2021.

This engaging free event teaches the importance of growing a fit body and mind through a fun and interactive day designed for children of all ages and their parents.

This engaging event promotes overall wellness for K–12 students and introduces participants to academic resources in the community in addition to teaching how to make healthy choices and live an active lifestyle. Activities for the 2022 Fit Kids Fest will include free, full access to the Savannah Children’s Museum including a life-size maze, slides, and sensory garden; a healthy scavenger hunt; a trail mix remix station; and face painting.

The first 150 children to arrive will receive a free t-shirt and other swag items. Raffle prizes, including sports equipment, will be awarded to participants. The Savannah school with the most students in attendance will receive a cash prize for sports/PE equipment.

Bring your young kids to watch the Georgia Day Parade at 10:45AM Fri. Feb. 11, 2022 in downtown Savannah.

As part of the annual commemoration of the founding of the Georgia colony by James Edward Oglethorpe, a tradition dating back to the earliest years of the colony’s founding, students, local dignitaries, musicians, & costumed performers will march through Savannah’s historic squares.

TASTE OF GULLAH @ Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Feb. 12 2022, Hilton Head Is.

2022 marks the 26-year history of partnership between the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina and the Gullah community. On February 12 2022,  from noon-3PM, the free, community-wide Taste of Gullah festival will be held once again on the grounds of the Arts Center. It’s an exciting day of celebrating the entertainment, food, and art of the rich Gullah culture that remains an integral part of the history of Hilton Head Island.

FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

The day includes performances by the award-winning Voices of El Shaddai, basketweaving demonstrations by Michael Smalls and Dino Badger, and a special presentation of “Harriet Tubman” orations by Cora Miller. Gullah-inspired crafts will be outside for all ages as well.

There will be two food trucks: Melly Mel’s and Chef B. Eatz, featuring okra gumbo, red rice, fried fish, shrimp, slow smoked ribs and chicken. Beer, wine, soda and water will also be available as well.

A festival highlight will be a special unveiling of a large-scale mural . Through a series of workshops, children from the Arts Center, Penn Center, and the Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton learned about the Gullah/Geechee culture then conceptualized and created the mural with artist Amiri Farris. The mural will then travel to various cultural sites in Beaufort County through Juneteenth. This project is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the South Carolina Arts Commission.

Also part of the festivities is the annual art exhibit and sale of The Aarts Ob We People inside the Walter Greer Gallery at the Art League of Hilton Head. The exhibit displays original work by acclaimed artists representing the life of Gullah people in the Lowcountry.

Seven-day FREE family passes available @ Live Oak Public Libraries for free admission to Jepson Center, Telfair Academy

Explore new exhibitions with FREE Telfair admission!

Check out a free seven-day family pass to the Jepson Center and Telfair Academy -both in Savannah- at Live Oak Public Libraries for up to eight people per visit.

This pass is only valid at the Jepson Center and Telfair Academy.

At 16 library locations across Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty counties, library card holders can now check out a seven-day family pass—usable for up to eight people per visit—that grants free admission to the Jepson Center for the Arts and the Telfair Academy in downtown Savannah. Each library location will have one pass available.

Both museums are open from 10AM-5PM seven days per week and house much of Telfair’s over 7,000-item permanent collection, as well as featured exhibitions, stunning architecture, and historical context. Upcoming exhibitions at the Jepson Center include Pulse: Chul-Hyun Ahn, (Jan. 13-Aug. 7), a series of interactive digital works by the Korean artist; Bruce Davidson: Face to Face (Feb. 4-May 1), a major career retrospective of the noted New York photographer; and Contemporary Spotlight: New Acquisitions from the Brandywine Workshop (Feb. 4-May 1), a selection of print work from leading Black artmakers including Emma Amos, Sonya Clark, Faith Ringgold, and Betye Saar.

In addition to visiting the Telfair Academy and the Jepson Center, Live Oak Public Libraries card holders can also check out free passes and obtain discounted tickets to state parks, museums, and other cultural centers across Georgia. Find details on those free passes here. 

Super Museum Sunday

From noon to 4PM this Sun. Feb. 6, Telfair Museums also will offer free admission to all of its sites as part of Super Museum Sunday. This free day includes tours of the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. Family activity kits will be offered at the Jepson Center, with investment provided by the City of Savannah, the Georgia Council for the Arts, and other sponsors.

Enjoy free access to SCAD MOA on Super Museum Sunday 2022, presented by the Georgia History Festival. Super Museum Sunday highlights the best of Savannah’s cultural offerings — all free of charge.

This year’s SCAD MOA Super Museum Sunday event includes a special screening of the SCAD-produced documentary A Thousand Miles and Counting, which explores the historic journey of William and Ellen Craft as they traversed the country — including the site where the museum now stands — in pursuit of freedom from enslavement. A mini workshop for school-aged children related to themes and ideas in the film also is presented.

NEW DATES FOR PULSE ART + TECHNOLOGY FESTIVAL 2022, Savannah, March 2-6 

Telfair’s annual PULSE Art + Technology Festival returns for its 15th year March 2-6 2022 (after being rescheduled from January) with two exhibitions exploring illusion and meditative applications of technology in art.

The exhibition Chul-Hyun Ahn: Beyond focuses on the illusionistic light sculpture of Baltimore-based artist Chul-Hyun Ahn, whose work invites viewers into contemplative infinite spaces. A companion exhibition in the museum’s TechSpace includes work by artists exploring light, illusion, and movement to create meditative experiences, including Ryan Buyssens’ prismatic light sculpture Chromatica, Aidan Lincoln Fowler’s video infinity mirror, and video sculptures and other works by artists including Max Almy, Teri Yarbrow, Greg Finger, Zhou Fan, Kelley McClung, Guanzhi Kou, and Skye Hu.

In addition to the galleries, PULSE will include the immersive video installation Return in the Jepson Center atrium by John Collette for the three evenings of the festival.
