Analog Photography Basics

Have you ever wondered how analog photography works? In this two-day workshop, you will get an introduction to 35mm film and how to use a darkroom. Students will shoot and develop their own film, as well as make photograms and silver gelatin photographs with enlargers. Museum members $100, non-members $125. Exploring Cyanotype
Ages 10-14
1-5PM, Dec. 15-16, Jepson Center
Cyanotype is a photographic chemistry that dates back to the 1840s and makes beautiful blue-toned images. In the first day of this workshop, students will learn how to coat paper to make it light-sensitive, and create photograms from different objects. Students will also be able to shoot photographs with digital cameras and learn to make large negatives for creating cyanotype photographs. Museum members $100, non-members $125. Every day, Telfair Museums Jepson Center opens the studio doors and loads the tables with creative exploratory activities for kids and adults. Work at your own pace and comfort level with watercolors, coloring books (for grownups, too!), or take the “What can we make?” open-ended challenge. You can also explore your crafty side with books and materials for calligraphy, origami, and more. Each month also includes a new themed project, designed to connect with a specific exhibition on view. A studio assistant is always available to help with any questions or needs. Day and evening sessions are offered for children, teens and adults in all skill levels.  Classes begin September 11 and run through October 20. All classes and workshops are held at the Department of Cultural Affairs studios, located at 9 W. Henry St.

One-day weekend workshops & six-week classes are available.  Visual arts sessions include ceramics, metals, glass, printmaking and fibers. New this session are jewelry-making, screen-printing, after-school fiber arts, after-school yoga & painting, drawing & more.

Students will learn how to burn their own silk screens with their own images, print on paper and fabric, and learn how to care for, recycle, and reuse a screen. Dive into Fiber Arts with Ms. Mary! Participants will learn how to create their own weaving board and work with a variety of fiber materials. The class will cover basic hand weaving techniques on a cardboard loom and students to create a small bag, a stuffed animal, or a decorative pillow. This class will also explore the art of hand embroidery. Learn the fundamentals of hand embroidery, a variety of techniques and different stiches. Participants will learn the basics of embroidery and decorate an item of their choice.

Teen Jewelry Making (6 Weeks) NEW!

This 6-week afterschool class will teach young adults of all skill levels some awesome methods to create wearable works of art. Students will explore basic jewelry making techniques like wire wrapping, enameling, kumihimo, beading, and macramé. Students will complete the session with 6 pieces of jewelry art. A 6 week progressive workshop that builds upon yoga inspired movement as an expressive art form. Students of all capabilities will learn movement patterns, and then express them into color on paper! We’ll work with dry and wet mediums to create colorful translations of how we move. Actor’s Studio: Intro to Acting for Youth (6 Weeks) NEW

For six weeks, students will participate in activities and exercises to help them make character choices and learn how to convey emotions to an audience. From monologues to silent scenes, blocking, and expressive movement, this course will help prepare you for all the elements of theatre and help you conquer the stage!

Wednesdays, November 2 – December 14, 4:00 – 5:30pm
This six-week class will focus primarily in foundational drawing techniques. Students will learn the fundamental principle of using basic shapes to construct images, specifically designing characters. Lesson one covers some of the basics for drawing the human figure (no nudity). The rest of the lessons build off this principle and dives into how to draw with stylization, movement (gesture drawing), and how to develop details. As students learn and discover their own shape language from these classes, they will be able to use this principle in many more ways than just character design.

Dance Theatre of Harlem Master Class: Calling all dancers ages 12 and older with intermediate or advanced dance experience!

The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina mid-island on Hilton Head is hosting the acclaimed Dance Theatre of Harlem for two performances and a 90 minute master dance class.

The Master Class on Mon. Oct. 31 at 5:30PM will be taught by the company director, ballet master or a company member and emphasize focus, discipline and the classical technique practiced at Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Parent & Me (Ages 3-4), 45 min. Install an outlet for how much FUN art is. Small projects and lessons that encourage a start in art.
The Fundamentals (Ages 5-8), 1 hr. Explore and learn about the artist’s toolbox. Presenting a collaborative environment with the goal to establish a foundation of basic skills for each artist.

Register now for The City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs Fall Visual Arts classes and Workshops.

Day and evening sessions are offered for children, teens and adults in all skill levels.  Classes begin September 12 and run through October 21. All classes and workshops are held at the Department of Cultural Affairs studios, located at 9 W. Henry St.

Four and six week classes are available, as well as weekend workshops.  Visual arts sessions include ceramics, metals, glass, printmaking and fibers.  New this session are Improv classes for youth and adults as well as Glass Beads and Jewelry, Printmaking Three Ways, Hand Embroidery, Mold Making, and Slipcasting.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. Space is limited and advance registration is required.  Credit cards are accepted.

This six-week class introduces Savannah’s Improv Company (SiC) method to create improvised scenes based on audience suggestions. Students in “Intro to Improv” will participate in group games and exercises that help everyone remember how to play. The focus will be on having fun and learning how to start an improv scene. As a bonus, you’ll get to perform for friends and family during a recital after the six-week course concludes.

Join this class and explore the art of hand embroidery! All levels welcome to participate. This course will cover the fundamentals of hand embroidery, a variety of techniques and different stiches. Students will learn the basics of embroidery and decorate an item of their choice.

Learn to hand weave from start to finish! Students will learn how to create their own weaving board and will work with a variety of fiber materials. The course will cover basic hand weaving techniques on a cardboard loom and students to create a small bag, a stuffed animal, or a decorative pillow.

This four-day camp helps upper-elementary and middle school students improve their drawing skills and begin the process of developing art portfolios. Students focus on measurement, proportion, perspective, and use of value to create volume and space. Master Artist Photography
Session A: ages 10–12, June 6–10, 9am–3pm

This intensive, weeklong program offers hands-on skills with both digital and manual cameras, exploring black-and-white photography, digital photography, and the basic functions of 35mm cameras. Instructors emphasize the advancements of digital media and Photoshop, while also covering conventional methods of film photography, including pinhole cameras, to supplement the experience. Using the documentary photography exhibition Elvis at 21 as inspiration, this program takes students on “location” shoots in the historic district and culminates with a reception and exhibition of their photographs in the Jepson Center. Register here. 

Raising STEAM: Technology, Art, and Electronics

This comprehensive STEAM camp allows young people to explore the artistic potential of technology. In this weeklong camp, students use a variety of technologies and methods to create art and express themselves. Students gain skills in 3D printing, Photoshop, and basic computer programming with Arduino microcontrollers. They also learn how to solder their own electronic noise toys, plus much more! Each day, this weeklong camp features a different local artist providing a unique lesson based on his or her medium of expertise. Lunch in Telfair Square (weather permitting), breaks and games in ArtZeum, and special tours of the galleries are all included. Full STEAM ahead! In this weeklong camp, students design and build their own videogames!
