Fall 2016 Art Improv Youth Classes Savannah Now registering 2016 Fall Visual Arts Classes and Workshops

The City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs is now registering students for its Fall 2016 Visual Arts classes and Workshops.  Day and evening sessions are offered for children, teens and adults in all skill levels.  Classes begin September 12 and run through October 21. All classes and workshops are held at the Department of Cultural Affairs studios, located at 9 W. Henry St.

Four and six week classes are available, as well as weekend workshops.  Visual arts sessions include ceramics, metals, glass, printmaking and fibers.  New this session are Improv classes for youth and adults as well as Glass Beads and Jewelry, Printmaking Three Ways, Hand Embroidery, Mold Making, and Slipcasting.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. Space is limited and advance registration is required.  Credit cards are accepted.  Class schedule and registration forms are available online at www.savannahga.gov/arts or by calling (912) 651-6783.

Introduction to Jewelry Making NEW

Join this simple and easy class where students with little to no knowledge of jewelry will learn the foundations and techniques in jewelry making. Using the basics of craftsmanship, students will learn how to work with metal to create a wearable piece of jewelry.

Mold Making and Slipcasting 101 NEW

Saturday, September 24, 10:00am – 2:00pm
Learn the basic characteristics of plaster and liquid clay and how their complementary relationship helps to make multiple handcrafted, repeating forms. In this introductory class, students will gain an understanding of mold making and slipcasting vocabulary and the various ways to use plaster and clay to develop their creative ideas. We will discuss single and multiple-part molds and each student will design a simple prototype in clay and use plaster to create a press mold of the form.

Working It Out! The Beginnings of Glass Fusing NEW

The beginnings of glass fusing – bring your ideas and let’s work it out! Learn how to cut glass, think in fusing terms, use the best safety practices when working with glass, and learn how to fire your glass project. Discover the world of layers, inclusions, frits, powders, and molds/slumping/draping. Explore the science of glass and the beginning aspects of working with glass.

Introduction to Jewelry Making NEW

Saturday, October 1, 10:00am-1:00pm
Learn the basics of jewelry making! Join this beginner class into jewelry making and learn how to make different style ring bands, torch and solder, and set stones with a bezel. This three hour workshop will concentrate on the fundamental techniques in ring-making such as forming bands, closing solders, patinas, and hand-finishing creations.

Sharpie Fabric Dyeing and Quilting (Two-Day Workshop) NEW

Thursday, October 13 and Friday, October 14, 10:00am-1:00pm
Sharpie pens? Yes! Dye your own fabric with Sharpie pens and quilt beautiful creations! Learn how to turn a Sharpie pen into fabric dye, then design and make a quilt block from scratch. The focus of the workshop is exploring the ideas of creating your own patterns for quilting. You will make your own dye, dye your fabric, and quilt a block.

This six-week class introduces Savannah’s Improv Company (SiC) method to create improvised scenes based on audience suggestions. Students in “Intro to Improv” will participate in group games and exercises that help everyone remember how to play. The focus will be on having fun and learning how to start an improv scene. As a bonus, you’ll get to perform for friends and family during a recital after the six-week course concludes.

Join this class and explore the art of hand embroidery! All levels welcome to participate. This course will cover the fundamentals of hand embroidery, a variety of techniques and different stiches. Students will learn the basics of embroidery and decorate an item of their choice.

Hand Weaving (6 Weeks) NEW

Wednesdays, September 14 – October 19, 10:00am – 12:00pm
Learn to hand weave from start to finish! Students will learn how to create their own weaving board and will work with a variety of fiber materials. The course will cover basic hand weaving techniques on a cardboard loom and students to create a small bag, a stuffed animal, or a decorative pillow.

Metalsmithing/Jewelry
Beginners Jewelry (6 Weeks)

Wednesdays, September 14 – October 19, 12:00pm – 3:00pm
Join this introductory course to jewelry design! The focus of this six-week course is to introduce basic tools and techniques used by jewelers. Students will work with wire wrapping, beading, cold-connections and learn some basic soldering skills to create several pieces of jewelry.

Glass
Glass Beads and Jewelry (6 Weeks) NEW
Instructor: Crystal Travaille
Ages 17+
Mondays, September 12 – October 17, 10:00am – 1:00pm
Explore basic flame-working techniques using an oxygen/propane torches to make beautiful glass beads. Students will learn through lecture, demos, and hands-on experience. Safety is of the utmost importance and students are requested to wear
natural fiber clothing with long sleeves. You must be 18 or older. Sorry, but this class is not suited for expecting mothers.

Introduction to Stained Glass (6 Weeks)

In this class students will learn the basics of glass cutting, foiling, and soldering together pieces of stained glass to create a finished work of art, ready to hang in any window.

Printmaking
Printmaking Three Ways (4 Weeks) NEW

Tuesdays, September 27 – October 18, 6:00pm – 9:00pm
This class will explore three types of printmaking – monoprint, silkscreen with handmade stencils, and relief printing. This four week class will devote one class night to each type of printmaking – culminating in the fourth class where students can mix and match materials and techniques. Inspirational images will be provided or students can bring in their own. Students will see the different outcomes from each method and begin to explore the potential that printmaking can have in their creative processes.

Children’s Clay (6 Weeks)

This introductory clay class will teach young students the fundamentals of hand building and sculpture. Students will work with coils and slabs and a variety of glazes.

This introductory class will teach you the basics of throwing clay on the potter’s wheel. Trimming and decorative techniques will be taught to give each vessel its own flair. Students will work at their own pace and receive individual attention.

Hand-Building (6 Weeks)

Wednesdays, September 14 – October 19, 1:30pm – 4:30pm
This hand-building and sculpture class is open to all skill levels. This class will help develop basic skills in clay construction, glazing, and decorative techniques. Learn techniques such as pinching, coiling, and using slabs to make basic forms and will
explore the use of tools, techniques, and alternative finishes, creating abstract and realistic pieces.
$150/$140 city residents

Open Studio (6 Weeks)
Instructor: Clair Buckner
Ages 17+
Wednesdays and Fridays, September 14 – October 21, 9:30am-12:30pm
The open studio session allows students time to practice skills learned in previous clay classes. This is not an instructional class. This six session studio time offers the freedom to come one or two times a week. Additional sessions can be purchased as needed. This session is open to students who have completed a ceramics class in our facility.
$150/$140 city residents
