 Savannah Music Festival runs through April 7. The city-wide musical arts event features renowned performers in jazz, classical, Americana and world music.

This year’s festival doesn’t include any family-specific shows, as the festival has in the past (Roger Day!!!!). But there are a few performances that organizers said could be considered appropriate for the whole family including:

-the Rousakis Plaza Swing Central Jazz, Big Band showcase noon Thursday, March 29.  The free open-air showcase will feature the twelve high school big bands participating in Swing Central Jazz. Details here.

-the small combo showcase in Reynolds Square 4-6 PM Friday, March 30.

The Hello Pops! with Wycliffe Gordon performance at 11 AM on March 27th at the Trustees Theater. is already booked with local school children & not open to the general public. The Savannah Music Festival has hosted several in-theater education concerts for school children in September 2011 and March 2012 in Savannah’s historic downtown and brings music programs to local schools via the SMF’s “Music in Our Schools” series.

 The Sandbox Interactive Children’s Museum is offering a new program, “Parents 411”: Interactive Informational Workshops for new parents. “Parents 411” will be held every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at The Sandbox beginning March 27, 2012.

“Parents 411” is a series of 10 workshops designed to meet the needs of parents of young children, child care providers and grandparents. The program includes local experts who will lead interactive sessions designed to provide information, answer questions and address concerns of new parents.

Teddy Bear Hospital, Savannah

The Children’s Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) will host the 22nd annual Teddy Bear Hospital on Saturday, March 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Parking Deck C on the MUMC campus.

Children age 10 and under are encouraged to bring their favorite teddy bear, stuffed animal, or doll through the mock hospital to learn some of the ways that hospitals help children feel better. This fun environment allows doctors, nurses, and technicians to perform various procedures on the toys, including X-rays, lab tests, and surgery. At the same time, children get a better understanding of how hospitals work and learn about wellness and injury prevention.

Participants to this year’s Teddy Bear Hospital can meet representatives from The Children’s Hospital at MUMC, SafeKids of Savannah, Coastal Pet Therapy, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Reach Out & Read, and more.

Pre-K Application Deadline for Pre-K at Savannah-Chatham public schools

Interested in putting your child’s name into the lottery for the 2012-2013 Savannah-Chatham public schools FREE pre-kindergarten program? Here are some important dates:

Applications for the 2012-2013 Pre-Kindergarten Program will be available Monday, February 27, 2012 through Friday, March 23, 2012. The child must be four years of age on or before September 1, 2012. Parents must provide proof of residence and a certified birth certificate when submitting the application. Please note: Contact Coastal Empire Montessori for that school’s application dates as the school has a seperate enrollment process.

Only one application per child may be submitted at a maximum of three sites. If applying at three sites, your first choice must be in your attendance zone. The application with the appropriate documents must be submitted to each school. Submission of more than 3 applications will result in the child being disqualified.

Children will be selected through a lottery drawing which will be held April 3, 2012 at school sites. Parents will receive written notification of acceptance or waiting list status at the end of April.

FREE Spring Kidfest, Savannah

On Saturday, March 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oglethorpe Mall will host Spring KidsFest – a seasonal celebration featuring free, family-friendly activities. Parents and caregivers are invited to bring their children to the mall for an afternoon of fun, including make-and-take crafts, face painting, music, prizes and more. In addition, a special appearance from the Easter Bunny is scheduled from 11 a.m. until noon.

The event takes place in the JCPenney Court. Activities also include a DJ spinning tunes and hosting games for families with children ages two to 12, Easter- themed crafts, prizes and a chance to have a picture taken with the Easter Bunny at the event site….so don’t forget your camera.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. All activities are free. Prizes and crafts are available, while supplies last.
