Savannah schools: St. Andrew’s School partners with JCB on weather balloon eclipse project

Thursday, August 17th, 2017

Savannah schools St. Andrew's

Students of St. Andrew’s School (SAS) will send a weather balloon above the Earth’s atmosphere this Mon. Aug. 21, 2017, to capture images and data of the first total solar eclipse since June 1918. During the solar eclipse, the moon will completely cover the sun, resulting in one of the most unique celestial events of the past century.

For more than one year, 30 students ranging in grade from seven to 11, have designed, built and tested the device consisting of a weather balloon, Raspberry Pi software, digital cameras and a JCB LiveLink unit. The students’ goal is to capture photographs of the eclipse and ‘flight data’ such as pitch, roll, altitude, barometric pressure and any change in temperature that may occur during the solar eclipse.

“This partnership with St. Andrew’s provides JCB with an opportunity to contribute to the educational development of our local community,” states Chris Giorgianni, vice president of Product Support and Government & Defense for JCB North America. “Congratulations to Mr. Greenall and St. Andrew’s for inspiring this young team of future technologists as they work on a project that could shape their future educational and career decisions.”
