Savannah Summer Camps 2017: Engineering Academy STEM Camp

Savannah Engineering Academy Summer Camp 2017 STEM Attention parents of teens who are considering careers in engineering.

The May 8 2017 application deadline is quickly approaching for The 2017 Savannah Engineering Academy Summer STEM Camp.

The five-day summer program @ Armstrong State University is June 5-9 2017. It is for rising junior and senior high school students interested in math, science and engineering.

During this STEM 2017 summer camps, students will:

  • explore engineering through hands-on activities such as building LED flashlights, remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), and a water filter;
  • enjoy field trips such as a riverboat tour of the Savannah River to learn about harbor deepening, river dredging, and local port activity;
  • visit to a local site development construction project
  • go on site visits to facilities including Gulfstream Aerospace, JCB, Skidaway Institute of Oceanography & more.

Students work with professional engineers from major engineering disciplines including civil, electrical, computer, aerospace, mechanical, manufacturing, industrial, water resources, environmental, and ocean.

What an amazing opportunity to learn about engineering, inform decisions on a college major and strengthen their college application.

To participate, students must:

  • Be a rising junior or senior in high school
  • Provide a teacher recommendation
  • Have grades of 80% (3.0/4.0) or better in all math/engineering/science/technology classes

Maven Makers in Savannah is a makerspace that supplies tools, training, and workshops in a variety of industrial and artisan fields for a monthly rate.

In the same way a gym membership provides access to an array of exercise equipment, a maker space grants its members the use of an entire workshop for a nominal fee.

During the I’m A Maker! Bootcamp, for example, kids will receive training on various shop equipment and power tools with an emphasis on their safe and responsible operation. Here are some of the camps offered this summer @ Maven Makers in Savannah.

I’m a Maker Summer Camp – Woodturning

Inspired by beyblades, you’ll learn the traditional craft of woodturning to make wooden tops and drag racers! This camp is designed for 11 – 14 year olds with an interest in learning about woodturning. The young Makers who attend will create two spinning tops, one carved by hand on a wood lathe and another utilizing state-of- the-art 3D modeling and 3D printing technology.

I’m A Maker Summer Camp – 3D Me!

What better way to start off the summer break than with learning about 3D design, 3D scanning, and 3D printing! This 4-day camp is designed for 7-10 year olds and will have every young maker make a bust of themselves to take home. I’m a Maker Summer Camp – Soldering My Summer!

This summer camp is about all things soldering for 11-13 year olds! Soldering is a fun and simple skill to bring all your projects to life! Each day will feature new soldering projects with everything from intruder alarms to light up badges. Learn more here. 

3D Wooden Puzzles and Savannah Crayons 

Saturday mornings are for making! This fun and simple camp will have you making wooden puzzle cubes and pouring your own Savannah inspired crayons. Come by for a 2-hour workshop on molding your own crayons and make your very own wooden puzzle cube! This camp is great for 7-10 year olds, but we welcome all ages! Every paid registration will leave with one wooden puzzle cube and 4-5 Savannah inspired molded crayons. Learn more here. 

The Coastal Empire STEAM Challenge 

A fast paced and exciting camp for experienced makers to push their skills to the next level. After learning the design process students will work in teams to solve a real problem facing the world today. Students will use tools throughout the shop to build their prototypes and compete for prizes

Summer Programs at St. Andrew’s School on Wilmington Island in Savannah are an opportunity to make new friends, take on new challenges, and fill the long summer days with sun, fun, and fresh experiences.

St. Andrew’s Summer Camps are open to all. Your child does not need to be a student at St. Andrew’s School to attend.

STEM, Sports & Programs for Preschoolers 

The diverse array of St. Andrew’s summer camps consists of hands-on experiences beginning at the age of 3, with new camps being offered in computer program design and STEM for older children. St. Andrew’s sports camps are coordinated by the St. Andrew’s School experienced coaches and teachers and provide training at different levels in many athletic areas including football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, and cheer.

The St. Andrew’s summer camp brochure is filled with programs to spark interest from 3 years of age to upper school.

Long-time favorites will continue with the addition of new camps involving 21st century material. All of the camps will offer the chance for children to develop strong bonds with other children.

STEAM Summer Camp The Guild Savannah Chromatic Dragon

Imagine a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) Summer Camp in Savannah for 4th-9th graders that has everything.

And by everything we mean: robotics & automation; video game design; Minecraft; 3D printing; freeplay gaming – all in state-of-the-art facilities at The Guild Hall in Savannah.

Plus, the camp is full day (9AM-4PM) with early drop-off, late pick-up options and campers get the perk of being able to order lunch for an extra fee from the Chromatic Dragon restaurant. There’s also a pavilion where campers can enjoy packed lunches.
