Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah is a kid-friendly educational spot that’s often overlooked.

The park’s Interpretive Center (i.e. Nature Center) is surrounded by easy hiking trails including the 1-mile Avian Loop Trail, 1-mile Sandpiper Trail Loop, and the 3-mile Big Ferry Trail Loop.

The Interpretive Center includes a display of the Giant Ground Sloth replica (pictured here); wildlife exhibits; live reptiles including a terrapin turtle; and birding station.

The First Tee of Savannah golf youth development program  provides young people of all ethnic and economic backgrounds greater access to golf and the life skills inherent to the game of golf. Formerly with the Telfair education department, Torrey is young local artist with a professional background in teaching & designing quality curriculum for Savannah’s public & private school systems. She has developed programs for toddlers, elementary & high school students, adults & seniors, as well as for special needs audiences. She received a MFA in painting from SCAD & has exhibited in numerous galleries. She has been nationally published in “New American Paintings” & exhibits locally at kobo gallery. To be a successful artist, technique is important, but creativity is key. Torrey creates a balanced curriculum between teaching foundational skills & allowing students to be explorative- providing a crucial outlet where creativity & expression are fostered.

Music with Mar: music & movement parent-and-me class in Savannah

We’re thrilled to tell you about a new, high-energy, affordable music and movement class for kids and their parents/caregivers in Savannah.

Music with Mar. is for children ages 6 months-6 years old and a parent/caregiver. The class opening will be the first in Savannah and one of many Music with Mar. classes nationwide.

Savannah classes are taught by Carlyle Dorroh, a warm and personable mother-of-three with a BA in psychology, Masters in Education and over 12 years in the field of education as a teacher and school director/principal.

Classes will meet at 11 AM each Friday (starting Sept 16th) in the music room of St James Catholic Church (8412 Whitfield Ave. Fronts on Montgomery Cross Road), Savannah.

One aspect that makes Music with Mar. so unique is there’s no registration, no set sessions and all ages sing and learn together. (Great for families with multiple children!). Classes run continuously and families are encouraged to come whenever they can – which Carlyle hopes is often!

Program founder, Mar. Harmon, is dedicated to offer a fabulous, developmentally appropriate, fun music and movement class for children at a very affordable price for families. Cost is $7/class per family (up to 4 children) or a block of 5 classes (to be used any time during a 2 month period) is $30.

Private lessons for piano, woodwinds, guitar, brass, and voice

For newborns (ages 0-20 mths): Kindermusik “Village”. Includes the musical poems of Woody Guthrie, bird songs & the naturally occurring sounds in nature help babies develop an early appreciation for language, movement, and music. Dance the Charleston, the Tango, & the Cha-Cha & learn why dancing with your baby helps develop vital learning skills.  15 week-long class. Cost includes tuition & 2 complete sets of home materials.

For toddlers (ages 18 mths-3.5 yrs): “Wiggles and Giggles” features 30 songs, 15 dances & many more laughs in unique music activities, designed to reflect the importance of movement in the life of a toddler. 15 week-class. Cost includes tuition plus a complete set of at home materials.

For preschoolers (ages 3-5):  Imagine That! class on Saturday mornings, entitled “See What I Saw”. Preschoolers use their real experience of playing in the park to create imaginative, storytelling scenarios with music, go on an imaginary trip to Grasshopper Park where they sail down the park slide & then recreate the sound of that experience with a loooong vocal glissando. Each week provides preschoolers one uninterrupted session of imaginative play that’s guided in a very specific, sequential way w/ a special sharing time with parents in the last 15 minutes of class. 15-weeks class. “Sign and Sing”: Offered Monday mornings; a 10 week class of music & sign language for hearing babies, ages 6-36 months. This research-proven signing class for hearing children speeds language development, eases frustration & enhances long-term learning abilities. It’s surrounded by easy hiking trails including the 1-mile Avian Loop Trail, 1-mile Sandpiper Trail Loop, and the 3-mile Big Ferry Trail Loop. The Big Ferry Loop is also open to bicycles for those kids who don’t mind bumping over tree roots.

Cool off after your hike in the air-conditioned Interpretive Center which includes a display of the Giant Ground Sloth replica (pictured here); wildlife exhibits; live reptiles including a terrapin turtle; and birding station where right now you have a good chance of seeing Painted Buntings, which are currently nesting there.

Free kid-friendly structured activities are regularly held at the park. The popular Mommy and Me Saturday programs start Sept. 10, 2011 at UGA’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island. 

The Fall 2011 4-week Mommy and Me program session are on Saturdays only this Fall.

Jumpbunch is an International Sports and Fitness program serving children and families throughout the US and India!

JumpBunch of Greater Savannah is currently offering classes in Savannah and Richmond Hill at Children’s Village, PALS, Early Learning, Maggies Morning School, Richmond Hill Montessori, Southern Montessori and many more locations.

FREE INTRODUCTORY CLASS July 11 AT 9:30 am

JumpBunch is offering a 10 week session beginning on July 18 – September 26
The class offered will be Monday morning at 9:30 am located at New Life Church at 16252 Hwy 144 E in Richmond Hill, GA. (No class held Monday 5 September)

The cost for the 10 weeks is only $65 (Jumpbunch offers a military discount of 10$ off)

Each week, Jumpbunch offers a cardio workout, muscle resistance training and introduces a new sport activity in a fun, hands-on, non-competitive environment. At this stage, Jumpbunch is building confidence and coordination.

Some of the fun sports Jumpbunch offers are: Lacrosse, Hockey, Football, Soccer, Bowling, Kickball, Cheerleading and parachute games and best of all equipment for each class will be available for each child. No equipment to buy!!

Jumpbunch offers a Mommy and Me class, Toddler and Preschool curriculum.
