Everyone is invited to this community celebration on Labor Day Monday, September 1 2014 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. @ Lawton Stables, located inside Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Is. (about a 1 hr drive from Savannah).

This event will include: Music, Pony rides, hayrides and the animal farm, The Sandbox’s Imagination Hour, craft projects and mobile interactive museum exhibits A pitching radar Kids Zone’s inflatable water slides and bounce houses Cappy the Clown Face painting Family activities like bocce ball, frisbee, ring toss, horse shoes and corn hole  

There will be concessions available for purchase and refreshments including, snow cones and cotton candy.

Participants may bring their own picnic provisions and beverages.

This upcoming Saturday July 26, take part in the first ever Puttathlon, running on Crosswinds Golf Course, a putt or chip could give you a short cut, saving you time and mileage. This event is to raise money for the new Pooler Farmers Market, which is opening Aug. 13.

You’ll run through the Crosswinds Par 3 course and be faced with multiple putting challenges. Make you putt and enjoy a shortened course. Miss your putt and you’ll be adding the distance back. Clubs and balls are provided on the course, just show up ready for a challenge.

Hilton Head Island offers over 50 scenic miles of public bicycle pathways and nature trails. The hard-packed beaches are also popular for bicycling at low tide.

2. Free family-friendly outdoor Gregg Russell concerts at Harbour Town, Sea Pines

A classic on Hilton Head Is. for almost four decades, Gregg Russell Concerts under the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town happen every night during summer (weather permitting) except Saturdays, 8-9:30 p.m. During Summer 2014, Gregg Russell will perform June 1-August 22 (every night except Saturdays) & August 28-31. This family-oriented singer/storyteller performs sing-a-longs, ballads & silly songs with audience participation. Kids in the audience try to get Gregg to pick them to sing a song to the crowd, often using creative pick-me posters etc. Concerts are free; there’s a $6 gate fee per auto.

3. Free petting farm at Lawton Stables in Sea Pines

The free animal farm includes a deer named Callie, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, turtles, cows and rabbits.  Kids can also pet a friendly retired Clydesdale, Harley, at the stables. 4. Hike trails in the free Sea Pines Forest Preserve

The 605-acre Sea Pines Forest Preserve includes easy trails to various points of interest including the 4,000-year-old Indian Shell Ring, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The walks range from 25 minutes to one hour. Bicycles are not permitted on the nature trails, so please park your bicycles at the locations provided. Open from sunrise to sunset. 5. Ride the free Sea Pines Trolley

Take the free Sea Pines Trolley to all your favorite Sea Pines locations during summer months & some holiday periods. This is a great way to entertain kids who are still thrilled by “bus rides etc”. 8. Explore FREE historical Stoney-Baynard Ruins, Sea Pines

The ruins of the old Baynard estate, the main house as well as attendant slave quarters, are permanently preserved within six-acre Baynard Ruins Park. Guided Tours @ Fort Pulaski National Monument

Starting May 31, 2014

Fort Pulaski National Monument offers guided tours at the following times:
Sunday through Friday: 10:30 a.m. & 2:30 p.m.
Saturday: 11:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m.

Through the tour, visitors will see one of the nation’s finest examples of a seacoast fortification, while learning about the construction and engineering of Fort Pulaski, Civil War technology, rifled cannons, general fort life, and the Battle for Fort Pulaski in 1862. Tours meet inside the fort and usually last 45 minutes to an hour.

Junior Park Rangers

When you take kids to tour national parks, you never know how much they are getting out of the visit. Especially for those of us moms who aren’t exactly history experts.

Which is why you need to pick up the Junior Ranger booklets at the visitor centers of national parks you visit. The Junior Ranger program kids engage more during the visits.

Junior Ranger booklets have activities about the national parks for ages 5-12. Junior ranger books are free to any visitor and usually are available at the visitors’ centers. Often, similar programs with more advanced activities are also available for older kids. Just ask at the site’s visitor center.

While doing the activities, children enjoy earning a badge and a certificate.

But did you know there’s a similar production modeled on the Savannah Christian Church one that takes place in Poland each Christmas, too?

This upcoming Christmas, lateChurch/Savannah Christian is sending a beloved Savannah family – parents Dove & Amber McHargue along with their identical red-headed exuberant triplet boys (pictured to the right) – to Poland for December with Proem Ministries. This spirited Savannah family will be involved in so many areas while in Poland – participating in camps, music, workshops and anywhere they are needed.

The McHargues will also have the opportunity to serve in the Polish version of The Journey, a re-enactment of the night Jesus Christ was born, called the Journey to Bethlehem. Last year during the 10 nights that it ran in Poland, 5,000 people attended. 

But the McHargues need your help!

You can help send the McHargue Family to Poland by attending a HUGE yard sale/bake sale Saturday, August 2 at 7 AM – 3 PM, 136 E. 64th St., Savannah, 31405. Every penny raised at the sale will go towards the McHargue family’s mission trip to Poland.

If you have any items, yard sale or bake sale, that you would like to donate,  there will be a Donation Drop Off Day Friday, August 1st at the same address (corner of 64th and Habersham) from 2-7pm. If you don’t have anything to donate, please come check out the sale. It is going to be HUGE and for a great cause.

Transition Area: The transition area will be set up in the front parking lot of the Island Recreation Center. Bike racks will be placed in 3 zones – grouped by age divisions. Participants will rack their bike on the bike rack(s) in their zone and set up their transition area next to their bike with their race equipment (helmet, running shoes, …).

Swim: The swim will start at 9am. The age group 4-6 yrs will go first and complete the swim – then, head over to the bike and run. ALL participants 4-6yrs will complete the race course before the next 2 age groups start the swim. Swimmers will use the same lane to swim their respective distance. The swim will be monitored by life guards and there will be skilled volunteers in the water (along the swim lane) assisting the swimmers if needed.

Transition 1: Participants enter the transition area and go straight to their bike. All participants must wear a helmet – NO EXCEPTIONS. Participants must run their bikes out of transition and mount their bike in the safe zone.

Bike: Participants will bike their respective distance. All passing must be on the left side of the overtaken rider.

Transition 2: Participants will dis-mount their bike in the safe zone and run their bike back to their spot in the transition.

Run: Participants will run their respective distance – and, finish at the finish line in front of the Island Rec Center.

Savannah School of Folk Music is offering Free Beginner/Intermediate Guitar Classes every Monday in August!

Classes will be held at Ms. Amy’s School of Music in Savannah every Monday from 6:00-6:45.

August 4th and 11th will be for any age child at the beginner level. August 18th’s class is for beginner adults to dust of that guitar and come on over! August 25th’s class is for the guitarist who knows a few chords and would like to expand knowledge while playing with others.

Class members need only bring themselves and a guitar. Size is limited to 10 per class, so it is important to email Amy and Jay at savannahschooloffolkmusic@gmail.com to reserve space, get directions, and ask any questions you may have.
