Savannah Magazine features a must-read article “How to Raise a Savannahian”

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

How to Raise a Safe SavannahianWe here at SouthernMamas always enjoy Savannah Magazine. Especially the May/June 2013 issue that features the article “How to Raise a Savannahian”

We particularly appreciate one break-out feature in the article (which unfortunately is not available online) entitled “How to Raise a Safe Savannahian”. It’s an interview with Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department’s Crime Prevention Office Cpl. John Simmons. Cpl. Simmons gives advice on a variety of parenting topics including:

1. Talk Tough About Guns: excerpt “…all parents need to sit down with their children and talk to them about gun safety. Explain what a weapon is and that it is not for show and tell – and it’s not to be touched without your supervision…”

2. Fight Crime with Caution: excerpt “The child should be conditioned to know that if the stranger keeps getting closer, he or she needs to turn and run away, find a safe place and call 911.”

3. Keep an eye on the Internet: excerpt “the Web is the number one threat to our children’s safety.”

4. Guard the cell phone: excerpt “Cool phone. May I see it?” That’s a question predators often ask potential victims, so the answer should always be no.”

City seeks input on Savannah public safety issues

Saturday, May 11th, 2013

Is there a public safety issue in Savannah that you’re really worried about?

Maybe you believe police chases shouldn’t happen near schools or densely populated residential areas like the one through East Savannah & Ardsley Park at school dismissal time on Wed. May 1? Or maybe you’re worried about our city’s home burglary problem? Or maybe you want the mayor & city council to do more to curb gun violence in Savannah & to work to extend background checks to online and private gun purchases as well as gun show sales?

Here’s your chance to make your case.

This week the City of Savannah is reaching out its citizens for their thoughts and ideas on public safety.

Residents can share their input in a special online form available at www.savannahga.gov/publicsafetycomment through noon on Friday, May 17th.

The comments will be compiled and presented to a special Public Safety Roundtable that will meet Monday, May 20, at 2 p.m. in the Savannah Civic Center. The Roundtable will be comprised of the top elected and appointed officials representing the major entities that touch public safety, including law enforcement, the courts, probation and parole, education, city and county governments, and various nonprofits and the faith-based community.

The goal of the Roundtable will be to identify key issues impacting public safety in our community, and begin a process that will create an action plan to make our community safer. The Roundtable wants to hear from the public on this matter, and has set up the online form to solicit input.

Learn how to talk to your children about protecting themselves from abduction & abuse at free Savannah event organized by The Next Generation

Thursday, May 9th, 2013
learn how to protect your child against abuction, abuse at Savannah safety eventThe Next Generation’s first Educational Social Event of the year is coming up on Tuesday, May 21st from 6 to 8pm at the Savannah Golf Club.
This year, The Next Generation has partnered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and will be hosting a Take 25 event!
You’re invited to attend to find out protective measures to help keep our children safer.
Dr. Margee McKenna will present practical advise to equip parents and caregivers to effectively talk to their children about ways to protect themselves from abduction and abuse.
Many of us take for granted communicating with our kids about safety and think that no one will ever abduct our children.  However, it could happen to any one of us. More than 2,000 children are reported as missing to law enforcement every day. Out of over 7,000 confirmed attempted abductions, analysis shows the following:
69% of victims are female
41 % are between the ages of 10-14
35% occur while a child is walking along to/from school, the school bus or riding a bicycle
35% occur between the hours of 2pm through 7pm on a weekday
Suspects: 96% are male, 48% are white
72 % involve a vehicle
Please come to this event and learn about how to communicate with your young children about these topics.
Organizers will also provide resources from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, including Conversation Starters and Child ID kits.  Please spread the word about this event.
Anyone is welcome and it is a free event.  There will be a cash bar.  Please RSVP to rsvp@nextgenerationsavannah.com by May 17.
