Savannah Food Day Festival 2013 Well FED

OCTOBER 26TH | DAFFIN PARK | 11 AM-5PM

For the past 2 years in a row, The Savannah Food Day Festival is the largest in the United States!

Each October, The City of Savannah is treated to a large outdoor festival, that is free and open to the public. Attendees are treated to a live concert, featuring many of Savannah’s top musicians. The public is encouraged to bring their own canopy tents, seating or blankets and spend the day taking in the music, browsing the nearly 100 exhibitors and vendors and shopping at the Farmer’s Market. Attendees are also sure to find interest among the two dozen unique and completely free workshops and cooking classes, suitable for everyone, including the kids!

What is Food Day?

Think of it as an Earth Day – for food!

Food Day is a nationwide celebration and a movement toward more healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. This is a national grassroots mobilization backed by some of the most prominent voices for energizing the food movement. Each year in October, people gather at events big and small and from coast to coast in homes, schools, colleges, churches, city halls, farmers’ markets, supermarkets, and elsewhere to raise awareness about food issues and advocate for change.

Craving Change?

Spearheaded by the nonprofit, Center for Science in the Public Interest, Food Day is organized around 5 priorities:
◾Promote safer, healthier diets
◾Support sustainable and organic farms
◾Reduce hunger
◾Reform factory farms to protect the environment
◾Support fair working conditions for food and farm workers

Thrive Obstetrics & Gynecology opens new satellite office in Pooler in addition to their Savannah location

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013

Thrive OB-GYN opens in PoolerCongratulations to the dynamo-sister team at Thrive Obstetrics & Gynecology on the opening of their SECOND office in our area. Thrive is now seeing patients at their new satellite office in Pooler, in addition to their Savannah practice in the Candler Professional Building.

The new Pooler practice is @ 114 Canal St. Suite 403 and is open Tuesdays & Thursdays.

Dr. Maryanna Barrett & Dr. Maria Paasch just opened their first practice in Savannah this past May. So we’re thrilled to see how well the community has responded to manner in which these two deliver health care with kindness, compassion and consideration.

Dr. Barrett and Dr. Paasch are identical twin sisters born and raised in Clarksville, TN. Growing up in a family of strong and nurturing women, both were drawn to the field of Women’s Health.

They attended medical school at The University of Tennessee in Memphis and completed their residencies at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. Dr. Barrett completed her training in 2009 and Dr. Paasch in 2010. Drs. Barrett and Paasch are board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

While offering complete Women’s Health Care, they have a particular enthusiasm for obstetrics, including trial of labor after a caesarean section (TOLAC), minimally invasive surgery, and pediatric and adolescent gynecology. They, along with their husbands and children, have newly relocated from Hawaii to Savannah, to be close to family and to re-establish roots in their native South.

Their approach to care marries the science of modern medicine with the art of listening to each patient’s individual concerns. At Thrive Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dr. Barrett & Dr. Paasch believe healthcare is a collaboration between the patient and her provider.

Dr. Barrett & Dr. Paasch offer a healthcare alternative that provides you with options and encourages you to choose the approach that works best for your life. They want to help you to take charge of your own health and feel your best at every age. They want to help you thrive…

Whole Foods Market opens in Savannah Tues. Aug. 13; Sneak preview tours available for $5 donation

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

Whole Foods Market Savannah opens Aug. 13 2013

Seems like just a short while ago when I wrote a column entitled “Hurry Whole Foods, Savannah is waiting!” in anticipation of a Whole Foods Market opening in Savannah. That wish is coming true this summer!

Whole Foods Market will open its doors Tuesday, August 13, at 9 AM at 1815 East Victory Drive in Savannah.

The 35,000 square-foot store features an organic salad bar, in-store smoked barbecue, fresh-made gelato, natural body care and nutritional supplements, and a parlor with 8 beers on tap.

Earlier this spring, Whole Foods Market teamed up with Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) for the Savannah Mural Design Challenge. Shoppers can see the winning design, a 20’ X 70’ mural, prominently displayed on the side of the building. The second place design will also be featured on limited-edition bags and t-shirts for sale at the store.

Whole Foods Market will also offer an early look at its newest Georgia store with sneak-preview tours. For a $5 donation to the West Broad Street YMCA’s Growing Edge Community Garden Project, curious customers can take a pre-opening tour of the store at a specified time slot. Tours are scheduled between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday, August 9, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 10.

Advance registration is required, and the link will be live on July 22: http://savannah.wholefoodsrsvp.com .

Tour attendees will be the first to get a glimpse of the new store, learn a bit about Whole Foods Market and the store highlights, taste samples, and receive a goodie bag. The store opens for business Tuesday, August 13, immediately following a bread-breaking ceremony (Whole Foods Market’s version of a ribbon-cutting,) with city officials and special guests. Customers arriving before 8:30 a.m. receive a free raffle ticket and are automatically entered to win a gift card ranging from five dollars to $500.

Whole Foods Market Savannah on Facebook here & on Twitter: @ WFMSavannah

We’d love to have Whole Foods Market Savannah partner SouthernMamas.com! So when you check out the new store, please tell them SouthernMamas.com is a great place to spread the word to local parents!

Check out the teen yoga classes at Ganesha’s Place, Savannah’s new therapeutic yoga studio.

To register or more information, (912)665-4199 or www.ganeshasplace.com

Ganesha’s Place offers a variety of therapeutic classes including yoga for special needs kids, children with autism & restorative yoga for caretakers.

What we love about Ganesha’s Place is that it’s a spot to explore, heal and have fun. Ganesha’s can be a place for the whole family: you’re not required to be athletic or wear special outfits. Yoga therapy at Ganesha’s regulates and improves the balance between health and wellness without the intimidating images of body contortions and “pretzels”.

Keep up with Ganesha’s Place on Facebook here.
