Tybee Island Kite Festival 2016

Savannah Parkinson Support Group invites you to the 5th Annual Tybee Island Kite Festival on Sunday, April 24, 2016 from 11AM-2PM on North Beach, Tybee Is.

This year’s festival is sure fun for the entire family with live music, a kite making booth, caricatures of family and friends and face painting, all free to the public.

There will also be kite contests on the beach, with winners taking home new and decorative kites of their own.

Plastic Kites and a cup of North Beach Grill’s famous gumbo will be available for a $10 donation.

Because of construction in the North Beach Parking Lot, the festival has shifted to the North End of the parking lot, facing the Atlantic, between North Beach Grill and the Tybee Island Shrine Club.

Come early, since the parking lot fills quickly during April because of the warm weather and cool breezes.

Take a few minutes to wander through the booths, learning about a variety of movement disorders, such as Parkinson disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Essential Tremor. According to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, movement disorders affect more than 40 million Americans. These diseases are chronic, painful and debilitating, often leaving the person affected without the ability to control his/her movements.

Information will also be available for People with Parkinson disease in the Savannah/Chatham County/Low Country area who are interested in participating in GEM!, a unique and effective exercise program developed by WTOC Hometown Hero, Coach Michael Cohen. These classes are held twice weekly at the Anderson-Cohen Weightlifting Center. Participants are charged a nominal fee and all supplies are provided.

Any donations made during the 5th Annual Kite Festival will be directed toward the further growth and development of this amazing exercise program that encourages people with Parkinson disease and their caregivers to work side by side, fighting the debilitating effects this disease.

The festival this year is being produced by Well FED Savannah with the support of the City Dept – Environmental Services and Sustainability Dept. The City of Savannah’s ESS Office is charged with developing, implementing, monitoring and measuring a comprehensive sustainability program that incorporates sustainability into all aspects of City operations and community life. This vision aligns with Well FED’s vision to educate and empower local community Well FED produces Food Day in October as well as the monthly event, Savannah Bazaar. FREE SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival

Enjoy festival activities and watch as chalk masterpieces emerge from the park’s sidewalks. Winners of the competition will be announced at 4PM. The event will also include food, music, student performances and a celebration of the university’s alumni.

High school participation

High school students are encouraged to put their artistic skills to the test and experience the creative SCAD environment. High school students must register in advance of the festival to compete for Ex Libris gift cards. Contestants should review contest guidelines and start sketching out ideas in advance.

Group registration for high school students

If you are a high school teacher or administrator, you may register several high school students at one time to compete in the high school competition. Each student registered within your group will be assigned one square and receive one box of chalk. Squares will be judged individually.

Fairy and Gnome Festival 2016 will be 10AM-2PM Sat. May 7 @ Oatland Island Wildlife Center, Savannah.

Join Oatland Island Wildlife Center for a day of enchantment! This family-themed festival is all about the “wee folk” getting up close with the natural world and encouraging imaginative outdoor play.

There will be a scavenger hunt, costume contest, crafts, and games.

All ages are invited to participate in the annual gnome and fairy home building contest. Homes can be built at the festival by using natural materials from Oatland’s forest.

Bring your whole family to stroll Oatland’s magical trails and maybe you will catch a glimpse of a fairy or gnome looking for a place to call home.

General Admission applies: $5 for adults, $3 for children, seniors and military.

Children will have an opportunity to explore a variety of interests that expound on some of the unique exhibits at CHS museums.

Jr. Scientist Camp for ages 4-6

Put on your lab coats and goggles and dive into the wonderful world of science. Campers will become botanists, chemists, paleontologists, entomologists, and explore other fascinating science fields during this week of summer fun! This camp is designed for ages 4 to 6 and will be held from 9am to 2pm Monday through Friday.

You-Pick Strawberries @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens,Savannah

Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm continues to offer fresh berry fruits for picking from the fields when in season. The harvest season is heavily weather dependent. None of the 2016 berry-picking fields have opened yet.

Look at the chart below. Call 912-921-5460 to learn the status of the field prior to arriving, as poor weather or large crowds may pick the field clean well before the 12 noon scheduled closing. The best time to pick is first thing in the morning at 9 am (as it is cooler, too).

No pets allowed in the fruit picking fields during your harvest. Children must be supervised to prevent plant trampling. You are responsible to pay for all fruits (ripe or unripe) picked during a visit.

The gardens have picnic tables scattered around the grounds if you want to make a picnic out of your strawberry picking.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Coastal Gardens, the 21st Sunday Supper showcases the prized springtime fruit: the strawberry. This informal, traditional supper is held at our Lakeside Pavilion featuring the first of CGBG’s strawberry harvest for the evening’s dessert!

The event begins at 4PM with tours of the Gardens showing the numerous expansion projects. At 4:30, come to the new Andrews Visitor & Education Center for a welcome by CGBG Director, Norman Winter. At 5 pm the meal at the Lakeside Pavilion begins (thanks to Savannah Belle Catered Affairs by Miss Sophie’s), and concludes with a strawberry dessert.

Exhibit Opens with Cook-off, Live Music, Kid Zone

Roots: The Lowdown on Lowcountry Cuisine, the upcoming exhibit at the Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage, opens with a day full of festivities, including a community cook-off, on April 30, 2016 from 11 am to 5 pm. The event is family friendly with a kid zone, food trucks, live music, workshops, local artisans and living history reenactments.

The community cook-off is an opportunity for anyone to show off their culinary skills in two categories: Lowcountry Boil and Barbeque. Entries can be cooked on site or brought to the event already cooked. Either way, the dishes will be judged by a select panel and prizes will be awarded. Those who want to participate in the community cook-off should call the Morris Center to sign up before April 20, 2016.

Join this hands-on workshop open to all skill levels interested in learning basic embroidery techniques. Students will learn how to create their own weaving board & will work with a variety of materials.

Join this fun, hands-on class, open to all levels from the beginner to those who want to learn more about various techniques in fused glass, culminating in a glass quilt. A glass kit with 4 sheets is included in cost, as well as scrap glass.
