Save the date: 2015 FREE Fit Kids Fest, Savannah, April 18

Junior League of Savannah KidsFest 2015 Free Family Events Savannah Junior League of Savannah to Host Fit Kids Fest free interactive health and fitness event for area kids and their parents Saturday, April 18, 2015, 3-5 PM at Optimist Field in Daffin Park.

Since the mid 1980’s obesity has increased so that not only is it considered an epidemic, but it has become one of the most serious public health problems facing the United States. One in three children in Chatham County is considered obese. Studies show that overweight kids are more likely to become overweight and obese adults. If obesity among kids continues to increase at this rate, our current generation could become the first in history to live shorter and sicker lives than their parents.

To aid in curbing this growing epidemic, the Junior League of Savannah will host their third annual Fit Kids Fest on Saturday, April 18th, 2015 from 3-5PM at Optimist Field in Daffin Park.

The first 250 kids will receive free tickets to that evening’s Sand Gnats game and a free t-shirt.

Learn more about Frank Callen Club for Boys & Girls @ a Savannah oyster roast, March 1

Sunday, February 22nd, 2015

Frank Callen Boys & GIrls Club Savannah

Want to help curb Savannah’s severe gang and crime-related violence problem?

Join WSAV morning anchor Dave Kartunen at an Oyster Roast to raise awareness of the Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club in Savannah, Sunday, March 1 @ Coach’s Corner from 1-4p.

Learn more about the Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club @ this community-recognition event.

For 98 years, the Frank Callen Boys & Girls Clubs have been in the forefront of youth development, maintaining a significant role in our community. The club provides children with developmental activities and services, encouragement and hope. The club’s mainstay programming is focused on academic success, sports and fitness, character and leadership training and healthy lifestyles. Though the club only charges members a mere $10 annual fee, it actually costs us $600+ per child, per year to provide those services. Each year, the club works with more than 1,000 children from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances and focus on a mission of enabling all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

The Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club depends on the generosity of  donors in the Savannah community in order to continue with their mission.

As you know, gang and crime related violence is on the rise here in Savannah. However, if the Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club has at-risk youth in programs, they are less likely to end up on the streets. Did you know that 33% of Savannah’s children live in poverty? As a result, children in poverty are 6 times more likely to drop out of high school and more likely to get involved with drugs, alcohol, gangs and crime. As a direct correlation, 80% of Georgia’s prison population is made up of high school dropouts. The Frank Callen Boys & Girls Clubs can change that; and, instead offer a bright future for our children.

The club’s programs work: 78% of the club’s kids are On Grade Level (the remaining 22% are those with learning disabilities); 93% are expected to complete high school; 88% intend/expect to go on to college; and, 37% of the club’s teens expect to achieve an advanced degree.

Hilton Head Is. St. Baldrick’s Head-Shaving Event, March 14

The fund raiser – which also will feature a silent auction and live music – is organized by Terry and Cynthia Cermak, who started the event in honor of their son Henry. In 2013, St. Baldrick’s created a Hero Fund in his name: the Henry Cermak Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research. About The Matthew Reardon Center

MRCA was founded by native Savannahian Kim Reardon and is named for her son. In 1993 when he was in kindergarten, Matthew Reardon contracted viral encephalitis, which caused permanent brain injury and epilepsy. At that time, Savannah had did not have facilities to treat children with serious illness such as his. The Reardon family and friends donated money to Memorial Health University Medical Center, which made medical care for neurological impairment available locally. Through their experiences, the Reardons learned that children suffering from neurological disorders have many needs beyond those that are physical. It was from this realization that the Matthew Reardon Center was born. As the incidence of autism increased dramatically, The Center refocused its resources specifically on the unique needs of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism operates the only year-round, day school in southeast Georgia for children with ASD. Furthermore, it promotes outreach and advocacy through forged partnerships with existing medical, educational, and community services in order to help these children reach their full potential and enhance their quality of life as well as that of their families. The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, and relies on support of those who share our passion and vision. For more information, visit www.matthewreardon.org.
