Sketch-Booking for the Family & More Youth Classes at Telfair Museums, Savannah

Check out the fall art youth art classes offered at Savannah’s Telfair Museums. We are particularly excited about the Sketch-Booking for the family class on Saturdays. We always hear from work-outside-the-home moms begging for more Saturday parent-and-me classes. This Sketch-Booking one is perfect. What a great way to get kids to become more conscious and observant of their surroundings. And after taking the class together, going on sketching outings around Savannah will be an inexpensive and fun adventure families can do together. Details below.

Crash Course in Portraiture

A great class for anyone that likes to draw but is scared to draw people or just interested in trying. This one day class will explore the basics of drawing Portraits in charcoal. Working from life students will gain an introduction observational measuring and proportion, as well methods for organizing approaches to complex subjects. Emphasis will be placed on creating volume, light, and shape with value, as well as additive and subtractive use of charcoal. All materials provided.

Toddler Third Thursday (3rd Thursday of every month)

10:30am-Noon 

Toddler Third Thursdays are great for parents, grandparents, and caregivers with pre-school children. Designed especially for preschoolers ages 3-5 and their adult companions,this program allows toddlers to explore artwork from Telfair exhibitions and complete a fun-filled art project relating to their tour. A different tour and project will be offered each month. Time to play in ArtZeum is included.  More info here.

The Frogwarts Express will board at Georgia State Railroad Museum from 5pm-6pm and take all the witches and wizards to Savannah Children’s Museum. The train boards on a first come, first served basis, so be sure to arrive on time to get onboard!

Tibetan Monks create sand mandala painting @ Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center, Savannah; FREE Children’s Sand Painting Activities

monks sand painting at Jepson Savannah 2013Tibetan Monks Return to the Jepson Center September 23-29 2013 with FREE children’s sand painting activities on Sept. 26 & Sept. 28.

The Tibetan Buddhist monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery return to the Jepson Center for the first time in more than four years to create an exquisite sand mandala painting as part of a free weeklong residency, sponsored by the city of Savannah. Programs related to the monks’ residency include a variety of activities for all ages and attract thousands of interested onlookers and participants.

From all the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, mandala sand painting ranks as one of the most unique of artistic expressions and is said to generate energies that promote global healing. The spiritual art form includes millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over the course of the week. To date, the monks have created mandala sand paintings in more than 100 museums, art centers, and colleges and universities in the United States and Europe.

WHEN:
September 23 from 5:00 pm to 5:45 pm: The monks begin with an opening ceremony of music and chants, and will begin to outline the mandala. They will continue to work until 7:30 pm.

September 24-28, 10 am to 5 pm: Watch the monks at work in the museum atrium during normal daytime museum hours, other than lunchtime.

September 26 from 10 am – 12 pm: Children’s Sand painting activity. A hands-on activity for the community to create a sand painting together.

September 26 at 5:30 pm: The Monks will lead a free lecture about the symbolism of the sand mandala.

September 28 from 1– 3 pm: Children’s Sand painting activity. A hands-on activity for the community to create a sand painting together.

September 29 Closing Ceremony:
10 am – 1 pm: The Monks finalize the details of the sand mandala.
1 pm – 2pm: The completed mandala is displayed
2pm: The Monks begin to deconstruct the mandala. they will distribute some of the sand to the audience. At about 3:00 pm, they will invite the audience to proceed with them from the Jepson Center to the Savannah River, where they will release the remaining sand into the river to disperse the mandala’s healing energies throughout the world. The release of the sand will take place at the base of the Barnard Street ramp.

All events are free and open to the public, thanks to the funding provided by the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs.

Telfair Museums to host FREE Near East Family Day @ Jepson Center, Aug. 17, Savannah

FREE Family Day at Telfair Museums' Jepson Center

Telfair Museums will host a free Family Day at the Jepson Center as part of its monthly Family Days series, which is free and open to the public.

This month’s theme is “Near East Family Day” and celebrates the art of countries and cultures represented in the “Allure of the Near East” exhibition, which opens at the Jepson Center on August 16. Families will enjoy hands-on activities, storytelling and a performance by TURKU, a popular band described as “Nomads of the Silk Road.”

Family Day is sponsored by the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs, Georgia Power and the AGL Resources Foundation.

TURKU’s high-energy performance will feature musical traditions from Turkey, Persia, Kurdistan, Caucasus and the Balkans, blending authentic historical songs with traditional improvisational techniques.

Families are also invited to attend a Pre-Family Day Workshop, which will take place in the morning and focus on making shadow puppets, marbleizing paper and piecing together a carpet puzzle. Reservations are required. Please call 912.790.8823 to RSVP.

Celebrate July 4th with Coastal Heritage Society, Savannah

At 10 AM on Thurs. July 4, CHS will have two interpreters in period costume present a FREE program for the Lachlan McIntosh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The presentation will focus on the politics and personalities of Lachlan McIntosh and Button Gwinnett, The program will be held at Colonial Cemetery and is free and open to the public.

CHS sites will continue their normal daily programming with periodic Battle of Savannah Tours beginning in the lobby of Savannah History Museum. The Tour is free for members and is included in a $17 See 3 Ticket for non-members.

CHS will also be running steam locomotive train tours throughout the day at 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. The 11am and 3pm train tours will feature a special reading of the Declaration of Independence for guests. Train rides are $2 per person for members and included in the ticket price for non-members.

Special children’s activities will be held throughout the day at Savannah Children’s Museum including two festive parades at 10:30am & 1pm, flag making from 11am-1pm, Water Wonders at 11am and Storytime at 12:30pm.

It’s the Georgia State Railroad Museum’s Steam Centennial!

Beginning Sat. June 29 and continuing through the 30th, the museum will be celebrating the Steam Centennial with exciting programming at Georgia State Railroad Museum.

Don’t miss the museum’s special birthday party Saturday June 29 at noon where everyone will sing “Happy Birthday” and enjoy cupcakes! Throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday, the museum will also have these programs:

•Go behind the scenes and learn about the care and feeding of a steam locomotive
•Blacksmithing with periodic demonstrations of the Steam Hammer
•Site Tours by Steam Train
•Talk to the Engineer and view the inside of the 1913 Restored Steam Locomotive

Snow is in Santa’s forecast while you play at The Sandbox’s Fourth Annual “Christmas in July” party scheduled for Wednesday, July 24, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm!
Festivities include special games and activities both indoors and outdoors. Outside fun includes getting crazy in our popular Bounce House and playing in the SNOW! In addition to playing in our “cool” museum, there will be scavenger hunts, games and fun arts & crafts. You can also decorate holiday cookies and chat with Santa to let him know how good you’ve been this year.
A hot dog lunch, complete with chips, brownies, snow cones and lemonade, is also included so don’t miss out on the “coolest” day of the summer!
Ticket prices are $10 for adults and children 1 and up, $8 for Sandbox Members and Active Military and Seniors and all children up to 12 months are free. Cost includes admission to the museum, all activities and lunch. Museum will remain open after the event until 5:00 pm.

This historic FREE event celebrates Freedom Day (or Emancipation Day), and commemorates the 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas, the last state to do so. The celebration will include storytelling, hands on activities for families, a performance by the African Spirit (Jamal Toure) and a rare demonstration of Geechee Gullah culture by the Georgia Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters of Darien.

Free Telfair Museums Admission for Military Service Members & Their Families from Memorial Day Through Labor Day in Partnership with Blue Star Museums

Telfair Museums offers free admission to military families Telfair Museums will honor active military service members and their families by offering free admission to any of the Telfair Museums from Memorial Day to Labor Day 2013.

Free admission is offered as part of the Telfair’s partnership with the Blue Star Museums program, which offers military families the chance to visit museums across the country free of charge this summer. Blue Star Museums is a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense & more than 1,800 museums across America.

Free admission for military families will be offered through Mon. Sept. 2, 2013 during regular museum hours the following Telfair Museums:

Jepson Center – 207 W. York St., Savannah 31401

Telfair Academy – 121 Barnard St., Savannah 31401

Owens-Thomas House – 124 Abercorn St., Savannah 31401

Admission is free to active duty U.S. military members or any bearer of a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), a DD Form 1173 ID card, or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card. Free admission applies to up an individual serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard & Reserve, U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps as well as up to five family members.

This intensive week-long program focuses on black-and-white and digital photography as well as the basic functions of 35mm manual cameras.

While instructors emphasize the advancements of digital media and Photoshop, they will also cover conventional methods of film photography, including Pinhole Cameras to supplement the experience. The camp features student use of both manual and digital cameras, a field-trip to a downtown gallery, visits from established photographers, on-location shoots in the Historic District, access to Telfair Museums’ photography collection and more! This year’s camps will feature a private gallery discussion and critique with exhibiting artist Jerry Siegel.

The program will culminate with a reception and exhibition of the participants’ work in the Jepson Center. Sponsored by Kathy Levitt and in part by Worldwide Camera.

The free events are held one Saturday each month from 1-4 p.m. at Jepson Center, located at 207 W. York St.

Attendees can look to the Rizza Silver Collection to explore ideas of shape, sculpture and dining traditions. Featured hands-on activities include faux engraving, aluminum foil sculpture, gallery games exploring silver works and a table setting challenge. Participants can also enjoy story time and the Telfair’s signature What Can We Make? challenge! The Georgia Power Foundation and the AGL Resources Foundation funded this Free Family Day.
Guests can also enjoy the opening of an exhibition of art created by youths across the Savannah community. During the summer, Telfair Museums’ education department made 45 site visits to parks, playgrounds and neighborhood centers. The City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs sponsors Telfair’s summer outreach program for youth

Single-site adult admission is $12 to the Jepson Center, $12 to the Telfair Academy, and $15 to the Owens-Thomas House. Admission to all sites is $5 for K-12 students and free to children 5 and under. A three-site admission pass is $20 for an adult or $40 for a family of four (includes a one-time visit to Telfair Academy, Jepson Center and the Owens-Thomas House for a week-long period).
