Savannah Children’s Museum invites the public to attend Bug Fest, the annual family-friendly celebration abuzz with bug crafts, activities and workshops.

The event will be Sat. May 28 2016, 10AM-4PM at Savannah Children’s Museum, 655 Louisville Rd. Savannah, 31401.

This year, build with Snapology (11AM- 1PM), learn about cicadas with Oatland Island Wildlife Center, enter an Insectarium with Armstrong State University’s Entomology class, meet some friendly reptiles from Georgia Reptile Society, while learning about their healthy diet of bugs, and become a member of the Eat-A-Bug club with our nutrition expert, Jesse Rosenblum.

Savannah Children’s Museum Educators also will lead activities such as a “bee dance” to demonstrate how bees communicate through movement, building a “pollinator hotel” out of all natural materials and reading from some memorable bug-themed children’s books including “Roberto: The Insect Architect” by Nina Laden and “The Very Busy Spider” by Eric Carle.

Jepson Center
Juneteenth is the oldest celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Free and open to the public, this annual festival features live performances and hands-on art activities for all ages, celebrating Savannah’s history and Gullah Geechee heritage. The festival begins with an interactive performance by Jamal Toure and other local storytellers, followed by demonstrations by traditional artists throughout the region. Children can experiment with crafts and try their hand at a variety of artmaking projects. A special highlight of the afternoon includes a live concert by reunited members of the Gospelaires, a legendary a cappella vocal group from Pin Point, offering a rare treat to the celebration.

Telfair Museums has an incredible collection of prints, but they are not always on display. This Free Family Day gives you a chance to glimpse some of these amazing works in the historic Telfair Academy, featuring master artists such as Rembrandt and Whistler. Museum doors open early from 9AM- 11AM to families who have children with special needs or autism. Designers will interpret the art by creating floral arrangements that will remain on display during the entire four-day event, which includes an opening party, a lecture by a nationally-recognized speaker followed by a luncheon , plus additional lectures, demonstrations, and a children’s workshop.

Local cinema lecturer Keller Jones will share her insights and enthusiasm for flowers in film in a presentation, Magnolias, Roses and Dahlias: The Power of Flowers in Film. Enjoy one last chance to view the flowers while enjoying tea and scones, Café à la Rose, and floral scented treats. Children’s activities for young budding artists will also be going on throughout the day.

Pottery camp at Savannah’s Clay Spot is a unique opportunity for children to work as actual artist in a professional ceramic studio. Each week young students will learn a variety of ceramic techniques. Children will create on the potter’s wheel and use several hand building methods as they unleash their imaginations as they create wonderful works of art. Each camp will have an inspirational theme and will be different each week, giving the opportunity for children to be involved in multiple camps.
