The Sweet Feet Academy Program is for children between the ages of four and eight.

The program focuses on the following ideas during all sessions:
•Fun
•Skill Development
•Learning
•Social Development
•Character Building/Enrichment
•Creation of a Positive, Family Centric Environment

The coaches at Storm Soccer Academy that work within the Sweet Feet Academy Program create a culture of learning and development at all sessions and game days. This program features one day of training (Tuesday) and one game day (Friday). Each session is one hour in length and the Storm Staff Coaches administer the entire session.

The first training session will be Tuesday March 4th from 4:30-5:30 PM at Jennifer Ross Soccer Complex and the first game will be Friday, March 7th from 5:30-6:30 at Savannah Christian DeRenne Campus. The program will continue until final game day on May 16th.

ArchaeoBus with archaeology hands-on activities & Digging Savannah walking tours return to Savannah

On Feb. 28, Abby the ArchaeoBus will be on the Armstrong campus. Armstrong students and home school students are particularly encouraged to attend from noon-5 PM (field trips will be attending between 9 AM-noon).

Then on March 1, the ArchaeoBus will be in the Savannah Mall from 10am – 5pm.

Abby the Archaeobus, a creation of the Society for Georgia Archaeology, is a former bookmobile retrofitted with archaeology hands-on activities. In addition to the bus, the Armstrong Anthropology Club will have tables set up for educational crafts for all ages! These include Buddhist Mandala sand painting, Alutiiq animal mask making and rock art designing, and Native American beaded jewelry creating.

This educational event is free and open to the public. The goal is to reach out to the community to acquire a larger audience interested in historic preservation.

Digging Savannah Walking Tours

February 22 and April  5- Skidaway Island Guided Hike

Spanning more than 5,000 years of history and prehistory, the park’s archaeology sites give us the opportunity to trace Skidaway Island’s past from Native Americans to moonshiners. AASU archaeologist Laura Seifert will lead the hike, which starts at the Big Ferry Trail head.

The hike is $10 per person (this includes your park pass) or free for Friends of Georgia State Parks members. Buy tickets here.

March 15- Walking Tour of Downtown Savannah

Savannah is famous for its beautiful historic downtown, but the ground beneath your feet is just as historic. Learn about the unseen and forgotten archaeology sites. AASU archaeologist Laura Seifert will lead the tour, which starts at the flagpole at Battlefield Park (next the railroad museum) at 2pm. Open to sixth- to 12th-grade students, as well as teachers & parents, Girls Engineer It! is focused on teaching hands-on STEM activities to introduce students to an Engineering/STEM career path.

Engineering is fun. Let these engineers prove it to your kids!

Students will go through 3 activities focused on different kinds of engineering taught by local technologists. The day starts with a STEM Expo which are small activities provided by local companies, surrounding universities and professional organizations. Then they will break the students into groups to begin the 3 (1 hr a piece) activities.

While the students are learning, there will be a separate event for the adults. Organizers will educate adults on everything they might need to keep the students interested in STEM, college prep, financial aid, and even community opportunities for internships. Adults will also learn their own STEM activity that they will be able to take home to teach the students what they learned.

Check out Savannah Children’s Museum, next to Georgia State Railroad Museum. The museum offers daily kids’ activities Tuesdays-Sundays, weather permitting.

Savannah Children’s Museum is opening in 2 phases. Exploration Station is phase 1 and is a unique 1 acre, 2 level outdoor exhibit area set in the ruins of a Central of Georgia Railroad building.

SCHOOL YEAR HOURS:
From August 31st, 2013 until June 1 2014, Savannah Children’s Museum will be open 10am-4pm Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-4pm on Sundays. Closed Mondays. SCM will be open on most “Holiday Mondays” including (Feb. 17 2014) when Savannah Chatham County Schools are not in session. Summer hours start in June.

Tarzan, Jane and the whole ape ensemble get to swing from vines and climb on trees throughout the two-hour musical. The production – which includes a live orchestra & adult and children actors – continues for the next two weekends:

The free, five-day celebration invites the public to participate in amazing interactive art experiences and hands-on workshops. Pulse Festival changes due to Savannah winter storm

The upcoming winter storm has forced Telfair Museums to change the schedule for its Pulse Art + Technology Festival.

Telfair Museums, which is comprised of the Jepson Center for the Arts, the Owens-Thomas House, and the Telfair Academy, will close at 3 p.m. Jan. 28. All three sites will remain closed Jan. 29 and will re-open at 10 a.m. Jan. 30.

The PULSE Art + Technology Festival at the Jepson Center (207 W. York St. plus events at various other local venues) will open Jan. 30 and the free five-day event has been extended through Feb. 3. Telfair Museums will be open from noon-5 p.m. Feb. 3.

Most PULSE events will continue as scheduled, but the opening lecture and reception will be added to the lineup for the evening of Jan. 30.

Program Descriptions:
Water Wonders: a free-play water based program in which children of all ages (this means adults too!) can cool off during the hot Savannah summer! Children may wear bathing suits during this program, but are required to put their clothes and shoes back on when the program is over.
Creative Crafts : a fun program designed to allow children to create something special to take home using their imaginations and creativity. This program is generally appropriate for ages 3-12.
Story Time: (a classic read-aloud program for children of all ages. The books read during each story time will be chosen based on the ages of children participating)
Super Science (This is an experiment based science program that will introduce children to interesting science concepts through REALLY COOL investigations! This program is generally appropriate for ages 4-12.)
Awesome Art (This goes beyond crafts to teach about different medias, artists, and techniques in a child friendly way. This program is generally appropriate for ages 4-12.)
Toddler Art ( program specifically geared to introduce toddler age children to new art-focused experiences that are highly sensory.  This program is generally appropriate for ages 2-4.)

great backyard bird count Feb. 15-17 2014 savannahWe love this! Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah will participate in the 2014 Great Backyard Bird Count on February 14 through 17 2014.

All that weekend the park will have special bird programs and guided hikes. They’ll be counting birds on the hikes as well as counting at the Interpretive Center bird feeders.

Stop by for 15 minutes or all day to participate. Stay tuned for program specifics. Note that although it is a Monday, the Interpretive Center will be open February 17 because it is President’s Day.

The park always has binoculars and bird identification books in the Interpretive Center’s bird room. So even if you cannot make this special event, you can always check out our latest bird visitors.

FREE family stargazing night @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, Savannah (March 8)

Don’t miss the FREE winter family stargazing event @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens (formerly called The Bamboo Farm and Coastal Gardens ) in Savannah: Gazing in the Garden!

The Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in conjunction with the Oglethorpe Astronomical Association invite you to a night of stargazing in the Garden. Saturday March 8 2014 6:30 PM. Telescopes will be set up for observation, but you are welcome to bring your own. Free & open to the public.

Before the star-gazing, you’re also invited to a free showing of a classic 1950s sci-fi movie in the Annex. Be prepared for less-than-ideal acting and effects in the movie, but know telescope views of the rising moon and stars await you on the Great Lawn.

Once the sun sets, join the group on the Great Lawn to view the waxing gibbous moon and other celestial entities! Dress for the weather, and feel free to bring a lawn chair, hot cocoa/coffee as you gaze upward with the help of telescopes set up by the Association. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited

Free and open to the public. This is a great family event!

Tellus Museum Science Night Sid the Science Kid

Wish we could lure Sid the Science to Kid to Savannah.

This looks worth the roadtrip to Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, north of Atlanta: Family Science Night on Feb 21.  Family Science Night welcomes Sid the Science Kid, the star of his own TV show that airs on Georgia Public Broadcasting. Sid will be on hand all night for photos, so don’t miss out!

Friday 2-21-14 5 – 9 PM

Highlights include:

Children of all ages can take part in a glider competition. Design your own paper airplane and see if you’ve got what it takes to be champion of the air. Races will be held in the Great Hall.

Exciting hands-on activities will show kids how the Wright Brothers went from bicycle repairmen to aviation pioneers, as well as other techniques used by the brothers to help them conquer flight. Also, make a kite – the very first flying machine!

Step into the observatory for a stargazing experience. The observatory will be open until 10 PM and additional telescopes will be on site to assist us in searching for the Orion Nebula and Jupiter.
