Archery*: Learn the basics of archery and test your skills on the range. This program will cover basic safety and technique. Equipment provided. Backyard Birding: Join a ranger in the bird watching area behind the Interpretive Center. We will identify and discuss the native bird species that live in the park and may also be found in your own backyard. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair from us.
DIY Birdfeeder: Birdfeeders provide an energetic boost to the diets of local and migrating birds looking for a hearty meal. Make your own to take home while watching our birdfeeders. Meet behind the Visitor Center at the picnic tables. $3 per person.
Family Board Game Day: From treasured classics to new favorites, we’re sure to have a game your whole family will enjoy. Stop by the Group Shelter from 9 AM – 4 PM for a fun-filled day of friendly competition.
Fungi Friday Hike: A wide variety of mushrooms pop up on the trails at Skidaway Island State Park. Let’s see what mushrooms we can find and identify. Make sure to bring your smartphone or camera! Meet at the Big Ferry trailhead for a 3-mile hike around the entirety of the Big Ferry trail.
Movie Night at the Park: Join us for an evening of family friendly entertainment. We will be watching a holiday favorite that is sure to warm even the grumpiest of hearts. Wear your holiday PJs, bring outdoor chairs and blankets, and meet at the fire pit behind the Visitor Center. Concessions available.
Picnic with a View: Pack a lunch and join us for a laid-back hike to the observation tower. Meet at the Big Ferry Trailhead at 12:30PM. The total distance is 1 mile, with a break at the observation tower to eat lunch as we enjoy the beauty of Skidaway Narrows.
Read with a Ranger: Young children will enjoy getting out for this hour of interactive reading. Listen to nature stories perfect for children with a love of the outdoors. Meet at the Interpretive Center, outside if fair weather.
Roving Ranger: A ranger will be roving the park to answer your questions about local flora, fauna, and more!
Science of Snowflakes: Join the naturalist in the Interpretive Center to learn all about how snowflakes are formed while you make a one-of-a-kind snowflake keepsake to take home. $2 per person.
Shortest Day Discovery Hike: Meet at the Visitor Center for a very short hike on the shortest day of the year. Let’s see what we can discover together on the path between the Visitor Center and front entrance. You might be surprised by what you find when you slow down and take a closer look.
Stills of Skidaway Hike: Uncover the history and science behind the abandoned moonshine stills on Skidaway Island State Park. Meet at the Big Ferry trailhead for a 3-mile hike highlighting some of the area’s most fascinating tales.

Make a mark that will celebrate your family over the holiday break November 23rd-24th and 26th 2024 @ Learning Through Studio’s family/group art making workshops.
You will learn the basics of mark-making by using printmaking techniques to create a customized mixed-media work of art. All art supplies are included. Feel free to bring your own snacks to share.
Each Family or group will leave with handmade mixed media painting on paper ready to decorate your home. Each participant will leave also with a 8×10 canvas panel to add to this memory. Framing information available by request.

Here’s a chance for Savannah middle and high school students to meet and hear insights from DeKalb County CEO and historian Michael Thurmond. This would be an stimulating FREE local event for students to receive extra credit for attending.
The 2024-2025 Georgia History Festival lecture will feature Michael Thurmond, DeKalb County CEO, historian, former Commissioner of Labor, and former member of the Georgia General Assembly on Thurs. Nov. 14, 6PM.
This engaging lecture will highlight the founding of the Georgia colony under the leadership of General James Edward Oglethorpe and examines Oglethorpe’s philosophical and moral evolution from slave trader to abolitionist. Mr. Thurmond is also the author of Freedom: Georgia’s Antislavery Heritage, 1733-1865 and A Story Untold: Black Men and Women in Athens History.
Location: The lecture will take place at Christ Church Episcopal, 28 Bull Street, in Savannah.
Cost: Free and open to the public.
This would be an ideal program for middle and high school age learners.
