Smart Start Nutrition Program series, each focusing on different aspects of a healthy lifestyle. 

Free for members or included with the cost of admission.

The focus is on physical activity & how to make smart choices about the energy we consume. There will be art, movement & literacy activities incorporated into the program & you’ll finish with a healthy snack. The whole family is encouraged to attend & participate.

Sensory Soft Sundays for children with special needs

Savannah Children’s Museum will once again offer Sensory Soft Sunday on select Sundays throughout the year. Museum doors open early from 9AM- 11AM to families who have children with special needs or autism. Sensory Soft Sunday allows these families to make local connections and explore the SCM space without a crowd.

The number of attendees is limited, so please contact Jessica Paterson for pre-registration via email jpaterson@chsgeorgia.org

Cost

Tickets are $7.50 per person over the age of 18 months and free for members.

Affordable Savannah kids’ art classes including parent & child clay workshops

affordable art classes savannah Clay Whistles & Balloon-Belly Birdhouse workshops are among the art workshops & classes offered by The City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs during Spring 2016.

Registration is open for The City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs Session 3 Visual Arts Classes & Workshops.

Registration Deadline:
Class registrations are due at noon, Thurs. April 14.
Workshop registrations due at noon the Thurs. before the workshop.

Day & evening sessions are offered for children, teens & adults in all skill levels. Sessions begin April 18 & run through May 13 2016.

Classes are @ the Department of Cultural Affairs studios, 9 W. Henry St. in Savannah.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment & all materials, tools required. Space is limited. Advance registration is required.

Make music from mud! Join us for a clay whistle workshop where we will be designing and constructing musical instruments utilizing basic hand building techniques and simple tools. A variety of finishing techniques will be discussed and your works will be fired.

Ipot: Ceramic Speaker NEW

Ages 12+, Wednesday, May 4, 3:30-4:30pm
We will make a one of a kind ceramic sculpture speaker for your electronic device. Basic hand building and sculpting techniques will be used. If you can bring the device you wish to amplify, it would be helpful in your design process. Several finishing technics will be discussed.

Sea Creature Sculpture: Parent and Child Clay NEW

Let’s make a sculpture! Sharks, seahorses, and silly fish are waiting to be made. We use basic hand building skills to sculpt our creatures. We will underglaze our sculptures with a variety of colors.

The active process of shopping for food challenges young learners to develop & apply math skills including sorting, classifying, calculations & the use of money, as well as concepts related to health & nutrition.

Have you been to The Sandbox Interactive Children’s Museum on Hilton Head Is. lately?

Spring 2016 is a great time go as the Sandbox has a lot going on!

Located just off Pope Avenue on the south end of Hilton Head Island (about a 60 min. drive from Savannah), this interactive museum provides a unique place for educational play between children and their parents, grandparents or caregivers.

Little ones from ages infant to eight will be captivated by the fun filled play centers and engaging activities.

Start your day with art! Once a month Telfair Museums’ youngest patrons are invited to the museum for story time, a special tour, and an art activity. Affordable Winter 2016 Savannah kids art workshops include clay classes & more

articles_1 Savannah art classes The City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs is now registering students for Session 1 Visual Art classes and Workshops for the 2016 calendar year.

These are wonderful, affordable day and evening sessions for children, teens and adults in all skill levels.

Participants can explore ceramics, raku, metals, casting, enameling, fused glass, drawing, basket weaving in one and two-day workshops and multi-week classes.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Credit cards are accepted. Class schedule and registration forms are available online here  or by calling (912) 651-6783.

In this class students will learn how to design their own characters! From anatomy to gestural drawing, students will learn how to build their own character with a unique story. Basic digital drawing skills will be covered as well.

Telfair Museums program for the stroller set! Join Telfair Museums for a monthly gathering where parents & caregivers can enjoy a morning at the museum while also engaging infants with art. Babies thrive on dynamic environments, so each month we’ll explore a different set of artwork. There will be touchable toys for the little ones, adult conversation for you & like-minded art lovers. Help celebrate the creative spirit and the accomplishments of Savannah artists young and old at Telfair’s annual I Have Marks to Make exhibition. Exploring the empowerment of people through art, the exhibition features works by individuals with disabilities and work by others making art in rehabilitation from injury or illness. Make your own mark in drawing and painting activities led by talented local artists participating in the exhibition, and take part in a moving program of poetry readings and performances at 2 pm, followed by a reception.

Free Family Day Saturday, Sept. 12 | 1-4pm | Owens-Thomas House

Come for an afternoon of history, craft demonstrations, and exploration at the Owens-Thomas House.

The main floor of the house will be open for interpretive tours in which families will meet characters from the history of the house, including Mary Maxwell and the Marquis de Lafayette, and learn about tea and entertaining customs of the period.
Visitors will see demonstrations of traditional methods of spinning and bread making and learn to play games such as marbles and croquet that were likely enjoyed by children in the household. Families will also see a demonstration of the faux-finishing techniques used in the house, participate in drawing activities, and learn to embroider!

Those are just a few of the fun art classes & workshops offered this March 2015 @ City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs studios at 9 W. Henry St.

Register now for or children, teens, and adults in all skill levels.

Sessions begin March 2 and run through March 28 2015. Three, four and six week classes are available, as well as weekend workshops.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Credit cards are accepted.

Jepson Center’s Melaver Studio
The studios are open for drop-in visits for all ages. No need to pre-register. Free to members or with museum admission. Open to adults and children accompanied by an adult caregiver. More info available here. 
Join Jepson Center as they open the studios for drop in visits for all ages. wcwm? (What Can We Make?) focuses on developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills through imagination. Explore your creative side with inspiring activities utilizing recycled materials, found objects, and traditional art supplies. In addition to the wcwm? project kits, the studios provide watercolor and collage opportunities as well. More info here. 

Saturday What Can We Make Factory Project
Saturdays, March 1- May 17, 1-4 pm Jepson Center for the Arts
Participate in the Andy Warhol Factory experience at the Jepson Center. A significant element of Andy Warhol’s silkscreens was his use of the same image over and over again. Guests can experiment with Andy Warhol’s exploration of pop culture, experience screenprinting, and take home their own serial creation.

Telfair encourages guests to drop in at the studio between 1-4 pm to work with assistants to screenprint Andy Warhol Flowers. All ages are welcome. Regular admission applies.

LIFE’S A BEACH – JULY 16
Jump into Martin Parr’s photographs of beaches around the world and compare them to the beach we have right down the road. Parr believes that a beach is a place where quirky behaviors can be found, so come explore coastal life through a different lens.

I LOVE THE 90’S – AUGUST 20
Go back to the 90’s and see how artists translated social issues through a variety of media. Focus on line, shape, and color in order to read artwork and objects.
