New 2-day Saturday writing & art workshop for teens @ Savannah Cultural Arts Center

Monday, November 8th, 2021

Abstract Creative Writing Savannah Saturday class

New 2-day (2 Saturdays) writing & art workshop for teens @ Savannah Cultural Arts Center

Let’s change everything you thought you knew about poetry, shall we?

This 2-day workshop for teens (taking place over 2 Saturdays) will focus on the rupture of form as well as genre. In other words, this is a hands-on workshop where we will be making things as well as writing them. As a group, we’ll observe and discuss collage, erasures, experimental and found poetry, playing with books that don’t look like books, and reading work that leaps off the page, literally. As individuals, students will be blacking out words, cutting things up, and plastering things together. Students are encouraged to get funky and think outside the box in this class. As a group, we’ll think about and define, for ourselves, what combining visual art, poetry, and storytelling can accomplish.

@ Savannah Cultural Arts Center (201 Montgomery St)

For ages 13-17

Sat. Nov 13 and Sat. Nov. 20 – 11:30AM-1:30PM

Parents – does this sound like fun? Join us in December for the adult creative writing workshop!

Ready to register? Sign up online here.

(Lowcountry Holidays 2021) Music from the Manger Holiday-Themed Festival, Port Royal, SC

Tuesday, October 26th, 2021

Music from the Manger Port Royal SC Holidays Christmas 2021 concerts

MUSIC FROM THE MANGER HOLIDAY-THEMED FESTIVAL, Fri. Dec. 10-Sun. Dec. 12 2021, Port Royal, SC

Port Royal Music Academy Director Jim Bachety is excited to announce a special holiday-themed festival: Music from the Manger is coming to Port Royal.

The Celebration will take place Fri. Dec. 10-Sun. Dec. 12 in the Port Royal Village.

This music-filled Festival will feature a unique Christmas Village and a performance by the talented local recording artist Liz Jane, whose newly recorded first Christmas music CD is “A Thrill of Hope.” Concert proceeds will benefit the Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA) of Beaufort.

The Music from the Manger Festival location will be at the end of the inside of Paris Avenue. Many performances with the simple nativity manger creche backdrop will be in the Safe Harbor rustic warehouse on 8th Street. There will be food and drink available, all sharing the theme of the holiday spirit rooted in the low country’s beautiful landscape.

Festival Chair Greg Shelton retired, and a former CEO of an Atlanta-based financial services company has lived in Port Royal full time since 2017. Creating the festival Music from the Manger with the Port Royal Music Academy was essential to Jim and Greg. “It demonstrates Port Royal Music Academy’s commitment to the community and the importance of giving to those less fortunate residing here,” Greg said. “Secondly, it will showcase a local young woman’s musical talent during this season of sharing while also benefiting CAPA of Beaufort.” He added, “Mark your calendars; you are not going to want to miss this.”

For additional information, visit MusicfromtheManger.com to view the schedule of events, purchase tickets, as well as to inquire about sponsorship and vendor opportunities. Learn more about performing artist Liz Jane at LizJaneMusic.com. Tickets go on sale Nov. 1.

FREE Family Day Oct. 16 – featuring Sonya Clark: Finding Freedom – for Savannah-Chatham residents @ Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center

A large fabric canopy draped overhead and spanning an entire museum gallery greets visitors to Sonya Clark: Finding Freedom, which opened Oct. 1 at the Jepson Center.

From 10AM-to 5PM on Sat. Oct. 16 2021, Savannah and Chatham County residents can view the exhibition free as part of Telfair Museums’ Free Family Day at the Jepson Center. They can also see Heavy is the Crown, a newly opened exhibition by the artist Noel W Anderson.

Telfair’s presentation of the immersive installation by Clark, an artist and Amherst College professor, offers a celestial viewpoint that encourages viewers to consider freedom-seeking enslaved individuals whose forced labor built America’s wealth. Draped as if a night sky overhead, the large-scale canopy is pieced together from cyanotype reactive fabric squares made with the help of workshop participants over the course of Clark’s various residencies.

Often under cover of night with bounty hunters at their heels, enslaved individuals seeking freedom used the constellations like the Big Dipper to orient their way north along the Underground Railroad—a network of people, safe houses, and clandestine routes in the early to mid-19th century used to escape from states, such as Georgia, that sanctioned slavery, into Northern states and Canada.

On Sept. 30, Clark delivered Telfair’s free, annual Jacob and Gwendolyn Lawrence Lecture to a full crowd  at the Jepson Center, with funding provided by the Jacob and Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Foundation, the City of Savannah, and the Georgia Council for the Arts.

Sonya Clark: Finding Freedom is organized by the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin and Marshall College in collaboration with Telfair Museums and is curated by Amy Moorefield. The presentation at Telfair is curated by Erin Dunn, curator of modern and contemporary art.
