Two new SCHOLASTIC STORYBOOK TREASURES DVDs featuring animals with attitude saved us over Christmas.

The Georgia Christmas snow storm meant we were snowed in for four and half days in a mountainside cabin in Blue Ridge, Ga. Four days with a 2 and 4 year old and a quickly diminishing supply of treats (and patience). Fortunately, I had packed the two new Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVDs.

One collection “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and More Animal Adventures” (62 mins. + extras, $14.95) features Jon Scieszka’s fun and creative take on the Three Little Pigs along with four additional stories. Kids get to hear the rest of the story, straight from the wolf’s mouth and learn that the whole Big Bad Wolf thing was just a big misunderstanding.

The DVD also includes “The Pig’s Wedding” (adapted from the story written and illustrated by Helme Heine); “Wallace’s List” about a mouse who can do almost anything – as long as he has a list; “Henry Builds a Cabin”, from the book by D.B. The madness that is the Savannah pre-k lottery (i.e. the race to get into your choice of free pre-Kindergarten) starts soon.

Applications for the 2011-2012 Pre-Kindergarten Program will be available Mon. Feb. 7, 2011 through Fri. March 4, 2011.  The FREE Georgia pre-k program is a full-day program available at some public and private schools.

The FREE pre-K classses are funded by the Georgia Lottery and open to children who will be 4 years of age prior to or on September 1, 2011.

At Savannah-Chatham public schools, children will be selected through a lottery process, which will be held in late March 2011. Parents will receive written notification of acceptance or waiting list status. Applications will continue to be accepted after the classes are filled, but they will be placed in a “waiting” folder in the event that openings occur in the Pre-K classes.

To obtain an application, go to any of the sites with the program. The Information desk at 208 Bull Street will also have applications.

Private schools also offer the free pre-K program including Maggies’ Morning School, Savannah Youth University, Candler’s  The Children’s House, and  YMCA Childcare Plus: but many have a different application process. If you’re interested in a private child care that has it, call the school to find out when their applications are due.  Many are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

When Savannah family and children’s photographer LeeAnn Ritch heard about little Cora Garola’s battle with leukemia, LeeAnn immediately wanted to reach out to Cora’s parents, Rob & Mandy Garola of Isle of Hope.

Ever since then every year, LeeAnn donates a free photo shoot and CD to the Garola family.

Ms. Amy’s School of Music in Savannah has a new six-week term of early childhood music education classes that start Jan. 12 for the Wednesday classes and Jan 15 for Saturday classes.
