First Day Hikes at various Georgia State Parks

December 18th, 2011

“First Day Hikes” Help Start the New Year with a Healthy Heart

Georgia’s State Parks host 12 New Year’s Day Hikes across the state, inviting families and friends to start the New Year with a “First Day Hike” and a commitment to healthy living.

In Georgia, a dozen state parks have planned guided hikes where people can connect with nature and even re-connect with each other. The nationwide event is sponsored by America’s State Parks, with New Year’s Day hikes being led in all 50 states.

Kicking off the New Year with an invigorating hike fits into the mission of the Georgia State Parks Tons of Fun Initiative: to encourage citizens to lead healthier lifestyles through outdoor recreation. The TonsofFun.org website includes exercise ideas, healthy recipes, nutritionist and personal trainer advice, and more.

A list of all ranger-led hikes on New Year’s Day can be found here, and the entire calendar of events can be found at GeorgiaStateParks.org/Events. Families may want to call ahead to make sure hikes are suitable for the youngest family members.

Register now for Spring 2012 Kindermusik parent-and-me sessions for children ages 0-7, Savannah

December 18th, 2011

Attention Families of Children Ages 0-7.

There’s still time to register for Spring 2012 early childhood music Kindermusik classes. The locally-based Kindermusik has wonderful assortment of musical adventures for you and your children in Savannah, Wilmington Is. & Richmond Hill.

You can join at any time and tuition is prorated!

Swing, sway, laugh, and play! Kindermusik is the #1 music and movement program for children newborn to age seven. For over 30 years we’ve helped children learn and grow in the Kindermusik classroom. As a parent, Kindermusik will strengthen the bond you’re developing with your child and give you tools to bring all kinds of learning home. Kindermusik classes are led by skilled, licensed educators, and our research-based programs will enhance your child’s development while instilling a lifelong love of music.

Classes include:

For the babies (ages 0-20 months): “Cock-A-Doodle-Moo” and “Dew Drops”. Cock a doodle MOO!! takes your little one on an adventure on a tractor through the farm, and all around town to meet many different animals. Dew Drops is a lovely curriculum, complete with Celtic music and Irish dances. Be ready to tap, bounce and fly together with your baby! This class is offered in Savannah, Wilmington Island and Richmond Hill. Class limit: 12 babies.

For the toddlers (ages 1.5-3.5 years): Hang on to your seats for “Away We Go!”. Experience life on a train, rocketship, submarine, boat and airplane as seen through the eyes of your active toddler. Hear the swish swish of the canoe paddles on the water, and fly up in the sky on human airplanes. This class is offered in Savannah, Wilmington Island and Richmond Hill. Class limit: 12 toddlers.

For preschoolers (ages 3 to 5 years): “Imagine That!” on Saturday mornings. The session is called “Toys I make, Trips I take”. Think of it like taking a course inside a child’s imagination. The class will use the theme of a toy shop to make pretend-creations, using rhythm and songs with every imaginary saw, hammer and nail. The result is building the preschooler’s sense of a sequence of events, which is good for storytelling, as well as making his ideas a reality. This class is only offered in Savannah on Saturday mornings. Class limit: 10 preschoolers.

For hearing babies ages 6-36 months: “Sign and Sing – Units A and B”. From the moment you as a parent meet that little one, there is a strong desire to understand. What is he thinking? Is he hungry, tired, too cold, content? Early on, every baby also has an innate desire to communicate. A Kindermusik Sign & Sing class (developed by Signing Smart)  gives parents the tools and knowledge to communicate with their babies using American Sign Language. Through songs and play, both parents and babies learn signs for words like ‘mommy’ and ‘eat’ and as well as practical signs like ‘more,’ ‘milk,’ and when he’s ‘all done.’ This research-proven signing class for hearing children speeds language development, eases frustration and enhances long-term learning abilities. This class is only offering in Savannah on Monday mornings. Class limit: 12 children.

Online registration is now available at www.88keysga.com  (click on the Kindermusik link at the bottom of the home page). Sibling discounts are automatically entered when you sign up online. All classes begin the week of Jan. 22, 2012 and go through mid-May, 2012. All classes are 15 weeks long, except for Sign and Sing, which runs 10 weeks.

Please feel free to contact Kindermusick with any questions. Share this info with out-of-town relatives or grandparents, as Kindermusik is happy to provide “Kindermusik semester” gift certificates all year round. Give the gift of music; the gift that they’ll never outgrow!

Savannah Children’s Birthday Parties: Puppet People makes parties easy & fun

December 12th, 2011

Stressfree isn’t the adjective typically used to describe childrens’s birthday parties. But that is exactly how I would describe my children’s combo birthday party this past weekend at Angela Beasley’s Puppet People “The Puppet Place” in Thunderbolt.

When it comes to children’s birthday parties, Puppet People do it all for you: from providing a fun atmosphere and a lively, animated puppet show as well as taking care of those pesky details like paper plates, utensils, even the matches to light the birthday candles.

The party hosts (who take care of keeping the kids entertained at all times) are not only energetic and upbeat, but also informative about puppets and puppetry as an art form. Our two-hour event included a puppet demo, a puppet show, a puppet-making craft – all interspersed with, music, fun games (limbo!) and bouncing balls to keep the kids stimulated. All I had to do was show up with cupcakes, popcorn & party favors.

The Puppet Place is a 1,000 square ft. indoor event space bedecked with puppet decorations and confetti-carpeting. It’s the ideal spot for a party when you don’t want to have to worry about the weather. And during good weather, you can extend your party to a backyard canopied with pecan trees and Spanish moss. Best of all, these creative birthday parties at Puppet People’s “The Puppet Place” are private. There aren’t other children’s parties happening there at the same time, as at some venues. Yours is the only party!

Explore Puppet People’s different packages listed here to learn about Puppet People’s parties and shows.

Contact Puppet People for prices and availability. Book Puppet People Party Place. Call 912-355-3366 or email puppets@puppetpeople.com

FOR CHILDREN
Here’s how it works, for the little ones:
•Choose your party theme
•Choose a puppet show from our “family-friendly parties” section
•Pick a date
•Contact Angela Beasley’s Puppet People to book it!

What’s included:
•A party host to tend to every need
•An interactive studio tour (you get to go behind the scenes!)
•Two hours in the fantasy-filled puppet factory
•Music, games and bouncing balls
•Puppet-making: each guest leaves with their own puppet
•Tableware

Price is dependent on time frame, number of attendees and themes. Puppet People can make your fantasies come true. Contact Puppet People today and they can create whatever you can imagine.

John Carrington Photography offers affordable, quality portrait sessions, Savannah

December 11th, 2011

When beloved Savannah photographer John Carrington started his freelance photography business, he made a lot of folks in Savannah happy. Finally, the 20-year veteran Savannah Morning News award-winning photographer was going to be available full-time, trading in his newspaper career to capture family portraits.

I am one of those thrilled Carrington fans. After all, when I worked at the newspaper with John, I dubbed him the “baby photographer” because he was always the photographer I requested when I was working on stories about children. John’s knack for capturing a child’s spirit in photos couldn’t be beat. So it’s not surprising he’s known throughout this town for photographing the memorable moments both big and small in the lives of people in the Savannah area.

If you’re interested in high-quality images custom tailored to your taste, please consider John Carrington Photography for all your family portraiture. Now for a limited time, John is offering a low $100 photo session fee at a Savannah area location of your choice. Photos will be available for viewing and purchase online at www.johncarringtonphoto.com in a password protected gallery. Prints are reasonably priced and can be ordered online and mailed directly to you usually in less than two weeks. Or if you prefer, any image you choose can be downloaded in high resolution for a slightly higher cost than a print. You can also send links to your gallery or individual photos to friends and family.

See examples of John Carrington Photography here. For more information, contact john@johncarringtonphoto.com  . Please say that SouthernMamas.com sent you!
