Each event begins with a group reading session on the lawn at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center (weather permitting), followed by an arts & crafts project in the visual arts studios. In Island Grocery where everything is child-sized (even the grocery carts), children can explore an environment that mimics the real thing. Shelves will be filled with play food products that range from lemons to ketchup to cereal. Follow the food chain! The active process of shopping for food challenges young learners to develop & apply math skills including sorting, classifying, calculations & the use of money, as well as concepts related to health & nutrition.

Beginning August 31st 2014, the hours at Savannah Children’s Museum will be as follows:

Wednesday through Saturday: 10am-4pm
On Mondays that Savannah Chatham County Public Schools are not in session(including MLK Jr. Day), SCM will be open 10am-4pm.

Program descriptions

Hooray for History: programming has been specifically designed to introduce basic historical information to young children in an age appropriate and FUN way. Generally appropriate for ages 3-8.
Family Fitness: brings the whole family together to learn about nutrition, health, and fitness in a fun and engaging way. This program is designed for children and adults to be participating together for maximum FUN and learning.
Creative Crafts : a fun program designed to allow children to create something special to take home using their imaginations and creativity. This program is generally appropriate for ages 3-12.
Story Time: (a classic read-aloud program for children of all ages. The books read during each story time will be chosen based on the ages of children participating)
Super Science (This is an experiment based science program that will introduce children to interesting science concepts through REALLY COOL investigations! This program is generally appropriate for ages 4-12.)
Awesome Art (This goes beyond crafts to teach about different medias, artists, and techniques in a child friendly way. This program is generally appropriate for ages 4-12.)

Parent & Me time: FREE library storytimes

Free kids events Savannah library storytimesLive Oak Public Libraries storytimesare a wonderful FREE way to expose your child to storybooks read aloud by a librarian as well as songs and fingerplays.

Plus, attending storytimes regularly helps your child to become accustomed to visiting the library regularly.

Free storytimes are offered for different age groups at the local branches – including Wilmington Island, Bull Street, Pooler, Thunderbolt, Oglethorpe Mall branch & Tybee Is. – at various times on weekday mornings. You can find a storytime happening at at least one branch Mondays through Thursdays.

There’s even a new afternoon, after-school storytime now that’s offered for ages 5 to 11 at 4 PM Tuesdays at the Oglethorpe Mall branch library.

Each library branch storytime brings something a little different – Bull Street library storytime unfolds inside a cottage playhouse that looks like it’s right out of a Golden Book while storytime at Southwest Library next to Savannah Mall is in a new, sunlit auditorium.

Enjoy energetic choruses of “Hurry Up, Hurry Up, Drive that Fire Truck,” “Little Red Wagon” and standards like “Wheels on the Bus” plus fun stories, crafts and more.

You’re invited to Splash Fest 2014 at Savannah Children’s Museum , Saturday, July 26 2014, 9 AM-2 PM.

Join Savannah Children’s Museum for fun water-based programs & activities.

Last year this was Savannah Children’s Museum most highly attended special weekend.  This year they’re going all out again with fun ways to keep cool and beat the heat – art activities, science activities, and, of course, WATER activities.

Savannah Children’s Museum is opening in 2 phases. Exploration Station is phase 1 and is a unique 1 acre, 2 level outdoor exhibit area set in the ruins of a Central of Georgia Railroad building.

SCHOOL YEAR HOURS:
From August 31st, 2013 until June 1 2014, Savannah Children’s Museum will be open 10am-4pm Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-4pm on Sundays. Closed Mondays. SCM will be open on most  “Holiday Mondays” including (Feb. 17 2014) when Savannah Chatham County Schools are not in session. Summer hours start in June.

Program Descriptions:
Water Wonders: a free-play water based program in which children of all ages (this means adults too!) can cool off during the hot Savannah summer! Children may wear bathing suits during this program, but are required to put their clothes and shoes back on when the program is over.
Creative Crafts : a fun program designed to allow children to create something special to take home using their imaginations and creativity. This program is generally appropriate for ages 3-12.
Story Time: (a classic read-aloud program for children of all ages. The books read during each story time will be chosen based on the ages of children participating)
Super Science (This is an experiment based science program that will introduce children to interesting science concepts through REALLY COOL investigations! This program is generally appropriate for ages 4-12.)
Awesome Art (This goes beyond crafts to teach about different medias, artists, and techniques in a child friendly way. This program is generally appropriate for ages 4-12.)
Toddler Art ( program specifically geared to introduce toddler age children to new art-focused experiences that are highly sensory.  This program is generally appropriate for ages 2-4.)

Storytimes in Savannah librariesFREE Storytimes  @ Live Oak Public Libraries branches in Savannah, Wilmington Island, Pooler, Tybee Island, Rincon/Springfield, Hinesville are a wonderful FREE way to expose your child to storybooks read aloud by a librarian as well as songs and fingerplays.

Plus, attending storytimes regularly helps your child to become accustomed to visiting the library regularly.

Storytimes usually involve much more than simply reading a book. Chances are your child will also engage singalongs, fingerplays and crafts.

FREE “Charlie & the Chocolate Balloon Factory” kids’ performance @ various library branches, Savannah

Based on several classic children’s books, this program by balloon artist Lynnae Weller (owner of Savannah Balloons ) tells the story of a tour of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.  Strange things happen to several book characters.  Shrek gets stuck in a tube, Alice in Wonderland drinks something she shouldn’t have, and Peter Pan loses his ability to fly.  Can a boy named Charlie save the day and return everything to normal?  Ages 3 and up. Encourage your budding writer to enter Live Oak Public Libraries’ Young Writers Contest 2012

Here’s a fun way to celebrate of this year’s Savannah Children’s Book Festival, set for Saturday Nov. 10 2012 in Forsyth Park: encourage your child to enter the Young Writers Contest 2012.

Live Oak Public Libraries is accepting entries for the annual Young Writers Contest, which is open to young writers in kindergarten through college. The submissions must include at least five words from books written by the 2012 Savannah Children’s Book Festival featured authors. Entry deadline is Friday, Oct. 21, 2012. Poems may be about any topic and choose from a variety of styles including haiku, sonnet, acrostic, ballad, cinquain, quatrain and free form verse. Writers are encouraged to visit their favorite library branch and check out books on writing poetry. Winners will be announced on Fri., Oct. 26, 2012, on the library’s website, www.liveoakpl.org , and will be notified by phone, mail or email. The library will host a reception for the winners, their families and writing teachers at the Bull Street Library on Wed., Nov. 7, 2012, at 5 p.m.
