The Oglethorpe Astronomical Association will be setting up telescopes in front of the visitors center for everyone to watch the total eclipse of the full moon for the month of May, sometimes called a “blood moon” for the color the moon turns when eclipsed. Weather permitting, the following stages of the eclipse will be visible:

Guests will be given an Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt map with instructions. Just follow the simple instructions, using the map for clues, to answer the secret phrase. After completing the hunt repeat the phrase to the Ranger at the museum and receive a prize bag with toy filled Easter Eggs & more.
Participants can receive an EXTRA PRIZE for taking a selfie at one of the clue locations.

New Women Take Over Wormsloe event, Sat. April 23 2022
This event explores the experiences of colonial women and their important yet frequently omitted, contributions to the success of Georgia.
Watch demonstrations of women’s skills such as blacksmithing, cooking, spinning, 18th century midwifery and the use of healing using herbs. Also, in collaboration with of Re:purpose, come witness timber framing. This family friendly event takes place from 10AM to 4PM on Sat. April 23, 2022 @ Wormsloe State Historic Site, Savannah.

Located south of Savannah on the banks of the Ogeechee River, Fort McAllister State Park showcases the best-preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy. Despite being attacked seven times by Union ironclads, the fort didn’t fall until 1864—ending General William T. Sherman’s “March to the Sea.” Explore the cannons, a furnace, bombproof, barracks, palisades and other remains of the battlefield, and admire artifacts in the Civil War museum. This scenic state park includes cabins, camping, walking trails, and fishing piers.
Tour the oldest English fort remaining on Georgia’s coast at Fort King George, which was the southern outpost of the British Empire in North America from 1721 until 1736. The on-site museum offers a film detailing the 18th and 19th– century history of Fort King George, including Guale Indians, the Santo Domingo de Talaje mission, Fort King George, the Scots of Darien and 19th century sawmilling.
In the late 1700s, the Continental Congress fortified barracks on the Medway River at Sunbury to protect the seaport from the British. When the British demanded the fort’s surrender on November 25, 1778, the defiant Col. John McIntosh replied, “Come and take it!” The British refused and withdrew back to Florida, but 45 days later, they returned with a superior force, and on January 9, 1779, Fort Morris fell after a short but heavy bombardment. Stand within the earthwork remains and view scenic Saint Catherine’s Sound. A museum and film describe the colonial port of Sunbury and the site’s history.

Lowcountry Celebration Park – which opened in December 2020 – includes Adventure Playground for kids, a discovery trail, pavilion and lawn for festivals, exercise stations, Wi-Fi, restrooms.
The new visitor center @ Skidaway Island State Park includes floor-to-ceiling windows to showcase the maritime forest and marsh plus birding from a screened porch; a 20-feet high giant ground sloth skeleton, a replica of an ancient fossil found within the park in 1822; nature exhibits including turtles and snakes; a gift shop is filled with clothing, toys, books, camping supplies, jewelry and local foods. The visitor center also includes meeting space, classroom space and staff offices.

Mohawk Lake Trail
The 17-acre lake (pictured above) located at 1132 Mohawk Street now has a new walking/jogging trail and dog park that opened in July 2021.
A roughly three-mile section of the proposed six-mile public Truman Linear Park Trail runs between Lake Mayer and East DeRenne Avenue, parallel to the Truman Parkway and Casey Canal. Part of the trail includes a boardwalk (pictured below) that runs through a woodsy section of Magnolia Park neighborhood. Learn more here.

Weekly events include birding, hiking, archery, exploring the park’s Interpretive Center and meeting the park’s live critters. Be sure to pack a lunch, snack, water bottle, bug spray and sun screen.

On every Saturday this Summer 2021 @ Skidaway Is. State Park in Savannah, participate with hands-on programs and work on earning your Jr. Ranger badge at Junior Ranger Saturdays.
Weekly events include birding, hiking, archery, exploring the park’s Interpretive Center and meeting the park’s live critters. Be sure to pack a lunch, snack, water bottle, bug spray and sun screen.
Each Saturday will be limited to 15 Junior Rangers. For ages 6-12.
The day begins at 8:30AM and pick up is at 4PM. The last Saturday is July 31.

Crabbing @ Fort McAllister State Park

Please bring a bucket for crabs, chair, water, and sunscreen. An old fashioned Memorial Day. Living history interpretations will take place throughout the day including Musket Firing. Tour the fort, museum and grounds of Fort McAllister along the banks of the Ogeechee River.
