St. Andrew’s School  sophomore Eden Young won the regional National English Speaking Union’s Shakespeare Competition last month in Savannah.

Eden took on the role of Queen Katherine for her monologue from Henry VIII and also performed Sonnet 146. Since January, she has been working on the two Shakespeare pieces with SAS theatre teacher Ms. Maggie Hart. Eden now receives an all expense paid trip to the National Competition in New York City this April. A panel of judges will select the top three performances.

Participants will also learn basic computer programming with Arduino microcontrollers. The program culminates with a reception and exhibition of the participants’work in the Jepson Center.

Spend the night in Georgia’s oldest brick fort and experience history firsthand!

Registration is now open for the 2018 Old Fort Jackson Family Campover, the annual event for families to experience historic programs and family fun in a 210-year-old National Historic Landmark. The event will be Fri. March 9, 5PM through Sat. March 10 at 9AM at Old Fort Jackson, 1 Fort Jackson Rd, Savannah, GA 31404.

Check-in and tent set up will begin at 4PM and dinner will be served at 6:45PM. That night, guests will participate in historic military activities, play period appropriate games, make crafts, and drill on multiple stations throughout the fort.

The next morning campers will rise, pack up their gear, enjoy a hot breakfast, and participate in the event closing ceremonies. Preregistration and prepayment are required and tickets are $65 for children ages 4 to 15 years of age. Tickets: $45 for adults 16 years of age and older. The Young Author Project, Deep Center’s introductory program, engages public middle school students with language & their stories to help them express themselves with skill, confidence & courage.

This free, state-funded Pre-K at some Savannah-Chatham public schools is open to all children who are 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 2018 residing in Chatham County.

100 DAYS SMARTER

St. Andrew’s School 4 year olds celebrated the 100th day of school by giving back to the Savannah community.

Learn more about your child’s options in Savannah-Chatham Public Schools at the annual SCCPSS Student Expo at the Savannah Mall this Sat. Jan. 20, 10AM-3PM. Don’t forget to bring your child’s favorite stuffed animal to the Teddy Bear Clinic.

In addition to college and career information, attendees will enjoy interactive displays & learn about all public school options across the district while gaining valuable information related to program pathways.

This year the Expo will feature a “Teddy Bear Clinic” which will focus on the Healthcare Science fields and showcase a collaboration between the school district and local healthcare professions and post-secondary institutions.

The event will include student competitions, interactive booth displays, a robotics competition, and prize giveaways.

Admission and parking is free and open to the public.

Savannah Honor Academy – where every student is an honor student –  recently added a 6th-8th grade class and will have open house for this new middle school.

The Savannah Honor Academy Middle School open house will be 2PM on Sun. Jan. 28 at the school located in the JEA Community Center at 5111 Abercorn St, 31401. Interested families should send an RSVP to Marla Cocalis at MarlaCocalis@yahoo.com.

Your kids can become a Junior Ranger 

Take advantage of the fact that we live within a day’s drive of multiple national parks & monuments & have your kids become a junior ranger at one or many of these sites.

When you take kids to tour national parks, you never know how much they are getting out of the visit. Especially for those of us moms who aren’t exactly history experts.

Which is why you need to pick up the Junior Ranger booklets at the visitor centers of national parks you visit. The Junior Ranger program kids engage more during the visits.

Junior Ranger booklets have activities about the national parks for ages 5-12. Junior ranger books are free to any visitor and usually are available at the visitors’ centers. Often, similar programs with more advanced activities are also available for older kids. Just ask at the site’s visitor center.

While doing the activities, children enjoy earning a badge and a certificate.
