Registration is open now for the Fall 2020 semester of SMF Jazz Academy. Enroll online here.

Open to all students in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. Open to all music levels.

This a flexible program that’s able to adapt to student’s needs and give them the skills to grow their creativity. It’s being offered virtually for fall 2020 and already serving students in jazz music education.

Here’s what’s included for each student FOR FREE:

Depending on musical level, students are provided the following:
1) 2 days a week (either Mon and Tues or Wed and Thurs) of Jazz Music Classes (online)

3) If your student needs an instrument or practice materials, SMF Academy has some for them that they can rent for FREE.

My 6th-grade daughter is enrolled and has already had a few of the sessions. She had her first private lesson today and loved it. She’s been taking saxophone for a year now and is a beginner. I’ve never seen her so spirited about her instrument until after today’s lesson. SMF Jazz Academy has been a welcome bright spot in my daughter’s distance learning during this complicated season of virtual education.

Savannah-Chatham public school parents, pediatrician urge board to provide in-person school option

Friday, September 11th, 2020

Savannah schools reopening Chatham County

UPDATE: On Wed. Sept. 16, Savannah-Chatham public school board approved a phased-in, hybrid model for return to in-person learning. Details here.

Savannah-Chatham public school board will continue to discuss a possible phased in return to in-person learning at a 9AM meeting Wed. Sept. 16 after hearing from parents & community members at the Sept. 9 meeting.

Watch the 9AM Wed. Sept. 16 on the SCCPSS YouTube channel here.

________________________________

The majority of those who spoke Sept. 9 urged the board to give parents the option of having their children return to in-person learning. Currently, Savannah-Chatham public schools are only offering virtual learning, with no set date for a return to in-person learning. (Savannah Classical Academy is a K-12 free public charter school that’s part of the local school system and is offering in-person learning)

Watch the Sept. 9 meeting here.

Particularly noteworthy are comments from Memorial Health pediatrician Dr. Andrew Gunter about 31 min. into the video. He advocates for returning to in-person learning with necessary precautions. Caring for children ages 0-18 at Memorial, the majority on Medicaid, Dr. Gunter said in-person learning is far superior and safer than online learning. He emphasized the important role teachers have in keeping kids safe, that teachers identify abuse and mental health disorders more often than parents and pediatricians, saying “We’ve had more children die from abuse and suicide in Chatham than from COVID.”

Dr. Gunter volunteered a group of pediatricians to help the board reopen schools safely.

“Please know we are a voice for our patients who have no say, we see the destruction of health and well being of children in our community and we’ve been examining patients safely for over seven months through this crisis. We can help show you how it can be done there just has to be will to get it done. Nothing is impossible,” Dr. Gunter said.

Find the Savannah-Chatham public school system’s proposed phased-in return plan here.

About Old Fort Jackson

Old Fort Jackson celebrated its bicentennial in May 2008, making it the oldest standing brick fortification in Georgia! A National Historic Landmark, the fort is one of only eight Second System fortifications (a series of forts built prior to the War of 1812) still standing in the United States. Join thousands of visitors who enjoy the fort every year, and experience military exhibits, daily cannon firing demonstrations during the summer, and a serene environment with a great view of the Savannah River.

St. Andrew’s School in Savannah will donate 75 iPads to Horizons Savannah this fall. The iPads will be distributed to students throughout Chatham County who participate in Horizons summer program.

“We believe this donation can really make a difference for students who may not have access to technology especially as many schools are beginning with virtual instruction this year,” said Kelley Waldron, St. Andrew’s Head of School. “We are fortunate to have a strong, supportive campus community and believe we also have a responsiblity in serving the greater Savannah
community.”

“Horizons is very fortunate to partner with St. Andrew’s School. In addition to this gift of technology for our students, St. Andrew’s provides a supportive and welcoming environment for all Horizons students and families each summer. Horizons students will use these devices to access distance learning from public school and also continue to be supported by our Horizons faculty through this transition.”

Recognized as one of America’s best summer learning programs, Horizons Savannah at Savannah Country Day School, Savannah Christian Preparatory School, Bethesda Academy and St. Andrew’s School serves over 300 under resourced students each summer.

Horizons is a transformative experience for young people in Kindergarten through the 12th grade focused on helping students close the achievement gap through academic support and confidence building.

Savannah Chatham public schools

Savannah-Chatham School Board members approved modifications in July to the academic calendar for the 2020-21 School Year due to COVID-19.

The calendar modifications include a delay in the start of the school year. The approved calendar modification allow teachers to return August 3, 2020 and students to begin instruction virtually on August 19, 2020.

The twelve intervening staff days would be dedicated to preparing all educators to deliver effective online instruction and face to face instruction as well as address other matters related to social emotional learning, hygiene protocols, student/family support services, accountability procedures, and revised Title IX regulations. The modified calendar:
• Offers 170 days of instruction
• Provides 12 days of pre-planning and training before the first day of instruction
• Begins the school year on Wednesday, August 19, 2020
• Begins the school year in a virtual “E-Learning” Districtwide model
• Adds two staff planning days for teachers at the end of the school year
• Includes the strategic use of Districtwide “E-Learning Days” on the November 3, 2020 Election Day, at the start of Second Semester, and after St. Patrick’s Day
