Children’s Music We Love: Elizabeth Mitchell’s “Blue Clouds,” Available Oct. 23

Monday, October 15th, 2012

If you only buy one children’s music CD this season, make it “Blue Clouds” by Elizabeth Mitchell & You Are My Flower.

It’s rather common in reviews of kids’ music to say that the tunes are so solid and fun, you’ll find yourself listening to it (and crooning along) long after you dropped off the kids at school. But never has it been more true than for this beautiful album.

We here at the SouthernMamas.com have been listening to this family-centric CD non-stop since the review copy arrived. And the kids like it, too.

See what we’re talking about: listen to Kooks, Blue Clouds & Froggie Went A Courtin’ by clicking here.

Mitchell transforms classic rock songs by David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, and others into folk songs that will just break your heart. Speaking of heart-break, prepare yourself for Mitchell’s rendition of “I Wish You Well” by Bill Withers. If you’re a parent, chances are you won’t make it through without tearing up.

Listening again and again to “Blue Clouds,” it’s easy to see that Mitchell looks to her childhood memories of 1970s radio on road trips in the family station wagon, and the result is her moving versions of “Kooks” by David Bowie, “May This Be Love” by Jimi Hendrix, “Blue Sky” by The Allman Brothers Band, “Everyone” by Van Morrison.

We also adore the CD cover illustrations by renowned children’s illustrator/writer Remy Charlip, whose 1969 book Arm in Arm provided artwork for the album package and lyrics for the song of the same title. Charlip also helped inspire the 2007 Caldecott Medal-winning book The Invention of Hugo Cabret (adapted for the Academy Award-winning film Hugo), written and illustrated by Brian Selznick (who also contributes to the liner notes in Blue Clouds).

Selznick writes: “You listen to [Mitchell’s] voice and instantly feel like her friend…. The songs on this album seem like a patchwork of memories we’ve always shared.”

We couldn’t agree more. If only Mitchell’s concert tour included Savannah!

Disclosure: We received CDs at no cost to review.

Gingerbread Village: Enter Savannah’s Edible Design Competition

Monday, October 15th, 2012

You’ve taken your kids to see the popular Gingerbread Village at The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa during the holidays every season.

Now it’s time to enter to win Savannah’s Edible Design Competition!

The Savannah Harbor Foundation and The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa are seeking entries for the upcoming twelfth annual Gingerbread Village: Savannah’s Edible Design Competition: a gingerbread-or-whatever-material-you-can-find house contest. Particular emphasis has been placed on creativity and ingenuity this year and entrants are encouraged to let their imaginations take their “designs” to the next level. Construct a gingerbread airplane or an aluminum-can Leaning Tower of Pisa—as long as all visible components of the design are edible, there are no limitations on how funky, eccentric or over-the-top entries can be.

Entries are divided into two categories, Adult (18 and over) and Student (17 and under), and anyone from elementary school classes to culinary experts and bakers are encouraged to participate in this grand event that has become such an extraordinary display of holiday spirit, creativity and talent over the last 12 years.

Third place winners have been added to each division and cash prizes have increased substantially. The Adult Division grand prize winner will receive $1,500, up from $100, and the Student Division grand prize winner will receive $500, double the amount awarded last year.

Gingerbread Village was first created in reaction to 9/11 as an opportunity to celebrate family, togetherness, and embrace life even during uncertain times. It has since grown to an annual delight that thousands come to view each year. Gingerbread Village has moved under the umbrella of a new series of holiday events called Festival of Lights (a 6-week program of fantastic light displays and nightly festive family events on Hutchinson Island starting November 23) and is sponsored by The Savannah Harbor Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, incorporated to help local and regional children’s charities and present family oriented events.

Entry forms must be received by Nov. 1 and can be downloaded by clicking here  or requested from the Gingerbread Committee ring leader, Teresa Berry (aka Mother Gingerbread) via email (Teresa.Berry@Westin.com) or phone (912.201.2048). Forms can be submitted by fax (912.201.2074) or email (Teresa.Berry@Westin.com).

Designs are due Nov. 18 and 19, and judging is scheduled to take place the evening of the 19th. A panel of professional judges will select the top entries and winners will be announced at the Savannah Harbor Foundation Boat Parade of Lights, Nov. 24.

Gingerbread Village will be unveiled in all its glorious, festive splendor Thanksgiving Day in the holiday-bedecked lobby of The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, and will be open to the public to view until New Year’s Day.
