Tybee Island Mardi Gras Parade, Feb. 9 2013

Celebrate Mardi Gras Tybee Island style with the Mardi Gras parade & other festivities on Sat. Feb. 9, 2013.

Schedule of events:

•12pm – 6pm
Mardi Gras Tybee Street Party: A new addition to the festivities this year, our Mardi Gras Street Party is full of exciting street entertainment. Stretched from Butler Avenue down Tybrisa Street to Strand Avenue, entertainers include musicians, puppeteers, stilt walkers, jugglers, hoopers, face painters, and more.
•12pm – 3pm The Fabulous Clams – Mainstage
•2pm – 3pm Mardi Gras Tybee Parade: The Mardi Gras Tybee Parade rolls down Butler Avenue from Memorial Park at 2pm.
Entries are still being accepted into this year’s parade. Applications are due no later than Feb 1. Click Here for Parade Application.
•3pm – 3:30pm Re-do I dos
•3pm – 6pm Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe
•4:15pm – 4:45pm Zydeco Dance Lessons: join our professional dancers in a quick lesson in Zydeco dance. These dancers will give you all the moves to dance the night away.

Parking and Road Closures:

Visitors are advised to be aware of road closures for Mardi Gras Tybee. There will be no through traffic or parking on Butler Avenue from 15th Street to Izlar Avenue from 6am-8pm on Saturday, February 9th. Visitors will be directed to both the 14th Street and 16th Street lots through 14th street and Butler Avenue with exits via 17th Street to Jones Avenue (there will be no traffic access to these lots during the parade 2pm-3pm).

If you are new to the Savannah area or are a new parent, then you need to check out Toddler Tuesdays, a fun weekly program that celebrates nature @  Oatland Island Wildlife Center, 711 Sandtown Rd. Savannah, GA, 31410.

At Toddler Tuesday, children & their parents/caretakers experience nature through themed activities including live animal encounters, wildlife nature walks, storytelling, songs, interactive finger-play & crafts.

Oatland’s naturalist Michelle Kelly leads these exciting & educational sessions.

Has anyone seen a turtle- rabbit before? Well, this is as close as you will get to seeing one. We’ll investigate these little armored ones and find out why we dig them so much.

January 15th, 2013: Toddler Tuesday’s Turtle Time
We’ll discover these prehistoric shelled creatures of water and land; so get out of your shell and head on over to Oatland’s Toddler Tuesday for this day.

January 22nd, 2013: Let’s Get it Right! Georgia’s Right Whales
It is no fluke that we are studying whales this time of year! They are living off the Georgia coast right now! These beautiful beasts give birth and raise their calves just off of Georgia, South Carolina and northern Florida’s coast each winter. We’ll celebrate their life cycle TT style.

January 29th, 2013: Alligator
It’s an all-included Alligator gathering! The alligator is my friend. He can be yours too…if you join me for Toddler Tuesday on this day.

February 5th, 2013: Indigo Snake
It is the year of the Snake in Chinese Culture. Come to Toddler Tuesday and celebrate the New Year with our honorary serpentine friend Bella.

February 12th, 2013: Honey Bees
We are sure to have a sweet time learning about these magnificent pollinators. We’ll make a craft and then make a bee line straight to the hives to see the bee dance in action. Warning, you may have to bee-have!

February 19th, 2013: Bovine Birthday Bash
Mooo- ve on over to Oatland for this Toddler Tuesday– It’s Sapphire the cow’s birthday! We’ll sing songs, roll play and stroll over to shower Sapphire with birthday love.

February 26th, 2013: Dolphin Discovery
Did you know that dolphin call each other by name? Come to this program and we’ll make a splash learning amazing facts about these highly intelligent creatures that are so common along the GA coast.

March 5th, 2013: Sing, Sing a Songbird
You don’t want to miss this Toddler Tuesday. We are learning all about nature’s best singers, the songbirds. We’ll sing a few songs ourselves then take the class outside and hear these spring time serenades first hand!

March 12th, 2013: ‘Possum Party!
You are cordially invited to Petunia the ‘Possum’s 2nd birthday party. We’ll lean about Possums and celebrate her birthday Toddler Tuesday style. It’s a birthday bash you won’t want to miss.

March 19th 2013: Sheep to Shawl
Baa baa black sheep gonna’ sheer your wool…for the sheep to shawl festival coming up the weekend after this TT. We’ll get an early start studying these wooly creatures. Bring your strollers because we are heading over to the barn to give our very own Dottie a sheep treat.

March 26th, 2013: Rabbit Rendez-vous
What Oatland animal loves the springtime? You’ll have rabbits on your mind during this holiday time; so why not have one in the classroom? We have a warm and fuzzy time learning about these lovely little lagomorphs, so hop on over to Oatland for this TT event.

Beginning in January, Kindermusik will be holding classes on Monday mornings in Bluffton at Play!, located at 53 Persimmons St. FREE DEMO DAYS will be held on Mon. Jan. 7 & Mon. Jan. 14 to introduce everyone to Kindermusik’s newest location. You can enjoy a free Kindermusik class with their child.

Classes will be available for babies (0-20 months) and for toddlers (18 months – 4 years old). Even though the DEMO classes are free, families need to enroll online at the Kindermusik website (www.88keysga.com ) because enrollment is limited.

Hilton Head Snow Day: Come frolic in a winter wonderland, roast marshmellows, play on inflatables

The New River Auto Mall Hilton Head Snow Day is on Sat. Jan. 26 from 11 am – 4 pm at Shelter Cove Community Park. Come frolic in the snow that day when the park will be converted into a winter wonderland. Plus check out all the inflatable rides which will truly make this annual event a winter carnival.

There will be a fire pit for roasting marshmallows and concessions that will include hot dogs and pizza from Giuseppi’s. Coca-Cola and Budweiser can also be purchased.

Admission is $10 for children 2 to 17 and will once again include the snow field and all the rides you can ride. Adults and children 2 and under get in free.

When was the last time you threw a snowball or built a snowman? Or have you never had that opportunity? Then Snow Day with its’ huge snow field is where you want to be! There is an area in the snow field just for the little ones and with inflatable rides like a 35 ft. high inflatable slide on hand so what better way to entertain your family and friends then at Snow Day? So don’t miss the chance to be part of “When Snow Found Hilton Head.”

One-Mile Kids’ Run with Rock n’ Roll Savannah Marathon

Finishing a marathon is child’s play with KiDS ROCK Savannah – a one-mile fun run for children in grades K – 7. This non-competitive, non-timed event is all about having fun and making it to the finish line. Kindergarten distance is a half mile run.

The run will be 2 PM Sun. Nov. 4. Register here

Participants can become full marathon finishers by completing a 25.2-mile training program prior to November 4th or they can just run, walk or jog the one-mile course on race day. Every child is a winner and will be rewarded with an official race number, T-shirt, goodie bag, and colorful medal – just for finishing!

School/Team registration is now open. There is no fee to be a team, however you need a minimum of 10 registered participants. Being an official KiDS ROCK Team allows your team name to be listed in our registration system and allows you to pick-up your student’s race numbers and t-shirts. Kids will enjoy the final mile of their marathon on an energetic, fun filled course! Participants can rock out with live entertainment and relish in the glory as they cross the finish line. There, kids will receive a hard-earned finisher’s medal and be able to feast on healthy post-race refreshments.
The start and finish line are in Daffin Park.
As participants in KiDS ROCK Savannah, you can become a marathon finisher by accumulating 25.2 miles of a marathon at your own pace over a span of 4,6 or 8 weeks with guidance from your parents or teachers. Wiggle Worms: 30min classes ages walking – 2yrs This “Parent and Me class” is designed to incorporate the earliest aspects of physical fitness, enhance fine and gross motor skills, body awareness, and muscle coordination while promoting physical, mental and social development. Music, basic gymnastics movements, and games create a fun and healthy atmosphere for you and your child.

Grasshoppers: 45 min classes ages 2-3yrs This toddler class is open to children who enjoy having parents close by and are ready to learn to follow instructions from another adult. We ask parent/guardian to assist until their child is ready to participate on their own. This class continues to enhance your child’s fine and gross motor skills, social skills, strength and coordination through the activities and obstacle courses that emphasize eye-hand coordination, climbing, hanging, jumping, running, and rolling in a fun and safe environment.

Bumble Bees : 60 min classes ages 3-4yrs This class continues to enhance and challenge your child’s physical, social and cognitive development. Basic tumbling and gymnastics skills, ball handling skills and preschool concepts are taught. Group activities, teamwork, and fun theme-based curriculum keep your child engaged and excited to participate.

Fire flies: 60 min/week ages 4-6yrs This class is designed for children in Pre-K through Kindergarten. Concepts and themes are designed to introduce and reinforce age-appropriate physical, social and cognitive skills. Basic tumbling, gymnastics, and ball handling are worked through obstacle courses, group games, and teamwork.

Dragon Flies: 60 min/week ages 6-8yrs This class is designed for children in First and Second grade. Toddler playground at Forsyth Park (next to the Visitors' Center cafe) includes a rocking toucan

Forsyth Park @ 700 Drayton Street, Savannah 31401, includes two playgrounds with bathrooms, café, spray pool, paved sidewalk for walking, biking. Pack a lunch (or eat at the café) & spend the day in this landmark, historic park. Wiggle Worms: 30min classes ages walking – 2yrs
This “Parent and Me class” is designed to incorporate the earliest aspects of physical fitness, enhance fine and gross motor skills, body awareness, and muscle coordination while promoting physical, mental and social development. Music, basic gymnastics movements, and games create a fun and healthy atmosphere for you and your child.

Grasshoppers: 45 min classes ages 2-3yrs
This toddler class is open to children who enjoy having parents close by and are ready to learn to follow instructions from another adult. We ask parent/guardian to assist until their child is ready to participate on their own. This class continues to enhance your child’s fine and gross motor skills, social skills, strength and coordination through the activities and obstacle courses that emphasize eye-hand coordination, climbing, hanging, jumping, running, and rolling in a fun and safe environment.

Bumble Bees : 60 min classes ages 3-4yrs
This class continues to enhance and challenge your child’s physical, social and cognitive development. Basic tumbling and gymnastics skills, ball handling skills and preschool concepts are taught. Group activities, teamwork, and fun theme-based curriculum keep your child engaged and excited to participate.

Cartwheel basics: ages 5-8yr olds. Skills, drills, and strengthening to learn how to do a cartwheel! (Several other basic tumbling skills will also be practiced)
Sport Readiness Training: ages 6-10yr olds. This class is a perfect opportunity for your child to increase strength, speed and agility with this age-appropriate circuit training course. Ideal for kids who play (or want to join) football, soccer, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, and baseball.
