Georgia Day Parade 2012 is Fri. Feb. 10, downtown Savannah

You’re invited to watch the FREE annual Georgia Day Parade, which kicks off at 10:30 AM Fri. Feb. 10 and follows Bull Street from Forsyth Park to City Hall, in Historic Savannah.

Thousands of costumed local elementary school children march behind their hand-made banners in commemoration of Georgia’s founding in 1733. A colorful parade of students, musicians, local dignitaries, and costumed characters is preceded by a military color guard and marching band. Beginning at Forsyth Park and continuing around all five squares of Bull Street, the procession culminates with a program in front of City Hall, where the mayor and other officials bring greetings and present awards for the annual Banner Competition.

SCAD Weekend Soccer Clinic for Kids, Savannah

Bring your kids to the SCAD Soccer Clinic Sat. Nov. 19 or Sun. Nov. 20 or both days at Daffin Park, Savannah.

The womens SCAD soccer team is raising money to go to Barcelona over spring break. To help raise money, the team is holding a soccer clinic for the kids of Savannah. THE DAY(s) WILL INCLUDES BASIC DRILLS, TECHNIQUES, GAMES AND TRICKS.

4-6 years old pay $15 per day
7-12 years old pay:
$30 for one day
$50 for both
**$5 dollar discount per sibling**

Ages 4-6 will go for 1 1/2 hours, 10am-11:30am. All players bring soccer ball, shin guards and water bottle.
Ages 7-12 will go for 4 hours, 10am-2pm. All players must bring a sack lunch, soccer ball, water bottle and shin guards.

Parents are encouraged to leave the children with us and enjoy their free time!!!

Jacob G. Smith Elementary and TailsSpin Pet Supply Store are joining forces to hold the Second Annual Savannah PAWrade featuring pet costume parade and contest, on Lamara Street, adjacent to Habersham Village,11 AM-3 PM Sat. Oct. 29.

Events – which are open to the public – include Pet Costume parade and contest, Celebrity Judges, Music and Food, Children’s Carnival, Local Artists, Dog Wash, Pet Nail Trimming and TailsSpin’s signature Low-Cost Pet Microchipping and Vaccine Clinic.

The Savannah PAWrade and costume contest will boast a line of exciting prizes for first, second and third placed winners, from Blue Buffalo, Dublin Georgia’s Hitek Rations, and Natural Balance Pet Food Manufacturers, engraved Pet ID Tag and Gift Certificates from TailsSpin Pet Supply Store.

Fourteen of the Greater Savannah Pet Rescue Agencies are scheduled to participate. Savannah Kennel Club will join the festivities with Doggy Derby; Jamison Murphy, Savannah teenage folk singer sensation will be performing, and the Jacob G. Smith’s PTA will host many kid activities throughout the day.

For every pet adoption, TailsSpin Pet Supplies will assist new pet owners by giving them a free small bag of dog food, an engraved ID tag, and 10% off their purchase that day.

100% of the money raised from the event will be divided among Jacob G. Smith Elementary and the participating pet rescue agencies.

Here’s a fun family bike ride suggestion: the I-Spy-a-Critter Bike Ride on Hilton Head Is.

This creature feature ride is a 10-mile route perfect for kids because it’s a treasure hunt for the island’s collection of permanent “creatures” – an alligator statue, a peacock stained glass window, a giant pelican, dolphin door, heron and horse statue as well as a few live critters – a trio of macaws, a Clydesdale, ponies, goats and a deer.

To make the bike safari adventure semi-educational, have your little ones complete the nature rhymes we paired with “animal” sightings. Check out the ride here:

Check out Magnolia Park Pool, which opens Sat. May 28. The pool is located in Magnolia Park neighborhood at the corner of Morgan Street and Bacon Park Drive.

Membership is open for a fee to residents and non-resident members.

The pool is open 7 days a week during the season and has a lifeguard on duty.

The 2011 summer season will feature special events around the pool and offer swimming lessons. The pool – which includes a diving board and baby pool – can be rented for parties and events. Special events include: “Dive- in” movie night 8 PM Saturday May 28, which is the official pool opening day. The movie and all other events are open to members of the pool only. Tybee Pirate Parade, Fireworks, Music

Pirate weekend is Oct. 8-10. This year, the celebration is bigger than ever, with the “Buccaneer Ball,” Fireworks Extravaganza, Thieves Market, multiple concerts – including the world-famous Marshall Tucker Band – Pirate Victory Parade, Kid’s Activities at Little Matey’s Cove and much more.

The most popular event, by kids’ standards, is the FREE Pirate Victory parade, which will be at 3 p.m. Sat. Oct. 10 along Butler Avenue The pirates and their buccaneers share their wealth of trinkets and doubloons with the crowd along the parade route.

Live music will be playing all day and at 9 p.m. Sat. Oct. 10, the Marshall Tucker Band will take the stage. Tickets to Pirate Fest are $10 weekend admission for the festival area and children 12 & younger are free. Click here to purchase advance tickets.

The train tour, crisscrossing the country with its own colorfully painted diesel engine and cars, features a clip from the 3-D “A Christmas Carol” to be released Nov. 6, as well as Charles Dickens memorabilia and displays.

The train tour is part of the marketing for “A Christmas Carol,” an animated 3-D movie Jim Carrey. Among the features of the tour is an inflatable 100-seat movie theater that will be erected near the tracks. Audiences don 3-D glasses to watch scenes from the movie.

Here’s your chance to see Robert Redford in person

redfordThe feature film “The Conspirator,” which will be directed by Robert Redford, is seeking those interested in working as extras for filming in the Savannah area. Filming is set to begin in mid-October and will continue into December.

Casting call will be held from 10 AM to 2 PM Sat., Sept. 19, in the Center Court at the Oglethorpe Mall on Abercorn Street.

The production company is looking for a large number of adult males, of all types between the ages of 18 and 80, to be included as extras. There is a special need for young adult males with slight builds, as well as men with facial hair, to portray Civil War-era soldiers. Production will also need adult females.

Those interested must bring a NON-RETURNABLE CURRENT SNAPSHOT of themselves, as no photos will be taken at the casting call. Photos can be a basic snapshot printed at home.

“The Conspirator” is a story that revolves around the trial of Mary Surratt and her alleged involvement in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
