Wed. Sept. 28:

7:30 AM Bird Walk: Come meet Mrs. Nell and join her on a walk to observe birds of the saltwater marsh and maritime forest. Bring binoculars and bird guide (also available to borrow). Meet at Interpretive Center.
11 AM Interpretive Center Tour: Join in a tour of the museum and see and touch fossils, reptiles, and more.

Thurs. Sept. 29:
12 PM Marsh Talk: Georgia has 1/3 of the salt marsh on the East Coast. Learn about this diverse and critical ecosystem.
5 PM Giants of Skidaway: Come learn about the amazing Giant Sloth and others that roamed Skidaway 10,000 years ago.
7:30 PM Sensory Awareness Night Hike: Learn all about the different creatures that come out at night. Then awaken your senses with experiments on this hike.

Fri. Sept. 30:
11 AM Sandpiper Nature Hike: Come for a 1.5-mile walk to learn about native plants and animals that inhabit the marsh.
2 PM CRAFT: God’s Eyes
4 PM Coastal Reptiles: Learn all about lizards, turtles, and snakes… Oh My! See and touch live examples.

Free August kids’ activities at Skidaway Is. State Park

The Interpretive Center ( i.e. Nature Center) at Skidaway Island State Park  in Savannah is a kid-friendly educational spot that’s often overlooked.

It’s surrounded by easy hiking trails including the 1-mile Avian Loop Trail, 1-mile Sandpiper Trail Loop, and the 3-mile Big Ferry Trail Loop. The Big Ferry Loop is also open to bicycles for those kids who don’t mind bumping over tree roots.

Cool off after your hike in the air-conditioned Interpretive Center which includes a display of the Giant Ground Sloth replica (pictured here); wildlife exhibits; live reptiles including a terrapin turtle; and birding station where right now you have a good chance of seeing Painted Buntings, which are currently nesting there.

Free kid-friendly structured activities are regularly held at the park. The popular Mommy and Me Saturday programs start Sept. 10, 2011 at UGA’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island. 

The Fall 2011 4-week Mommy and Me program session are on Saturdays only this Fall.

The educational programs for children between the ages of 1 and 4 include learning techniques that allow for the development of motor skills, understanding of different sizes, shapes, weights, and movements among a variety of marine animals native to Georgia waterways and the ability to identify the difference between fish, crabs, turtles, and invertebrates. The programs will include hands-on experiences with different animals, arts and crafts, a story time, and a game.

Labor Day Beach Bash and Fireworks, Tybee Is.

4th Annual Labor Day Beach Bash. Enjoy the ocean breezes, live music and fireworks from Tybee Pier & Pavilion at the 4th Annual Tybee Island Labor Day Beach Bash. Free live entertainment starts at 7 p.m. featuring the Swingin’ Medallions. This high-energy band has performed live with Bruce Springsteen and been featured in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. The Labor Day Beach Bash fireworks display can be enjoyed from the pier, the beach or anywhere on Tybee Island after dark (around 9:15 p.m.). Free and open to the public.
